Awesome tests and thanks for the info! Very in depth. Hoping you guys can give the 380 Golden Saber "Defense" new boxes a shot. I believe its 102gr.

We'll have to keep a look out for that ammo.

Nice testing. I carry Underwood Defender in cold weather and Defiant Munitions in warmer weather. I would also trust Gold Dots. Hydro Shok is uneven with gel and fabric.

I use Underwood Extreme Defender….to me it’s the best all around choice.

Always good tests, Bacon! 👍 The problem with HPs in the 380 is that most fail to expand reliably in gel+fabric tests I've seen. The Hydra-Shok Deeps were especially disappointing as they always glogged with fabric and failed to expand and performed just like an FMJ. In my other handguns, I use Federal HST and Speer Gold Dots but not in my 380s. For 380, I use Underwood Xtreme Defenders and Xtreme Penetrators and FMJ.

We've not meat target tested the hydra-shock deep yet, but for other 380 ammo in the past we tested the internet myth that it gets hung up by clothes and fabric, and found that to not be true for at least some common popular ammo. Ammos like Hornady Critical Defense, Speer Gold Dot, and Sig Elite Defense we've had good performance not only in the gel block tests but also against the meat target when wrapped in a heavy winter coat. Last time we tested them all the rounds were either stopped in the back of the coat or the arms of the jacket we had wrapped around it, with expansion similar to what we saw in the gel but not as marketing material pretty by virtue of the bones and what not being there instead of just the gel.

Thanks for the video and info. I was pretty sold on the need for a solid tip not expanding self defense cartridge for the 380 round. Given the Federal HST line is my preferred 9mm load guess I'll have to try their "deep" 380 offering based on this thorough and enlightening test.

I'd buy it again after the results I've got so far. Hopefully I'll see it in store at some point. I had to order that ammo of the intertubs for this video. The crew found a bunch of the normal hydra-shock in their area and brought it on test day, along with a few others, but we only had so many blocks and couldn't test everything.

Why would you waste your time testing G2? Everyone knows they're the real gimmick bullet. Testing TUI would had been more informative.

That's a good question. I too considered it a gimmick to the max ammo. Recently there seems to have been an influx of comments on the intertubes of people saying they carry that ammo in 380, and we wanted to be able to comment on that based on first hand knowledge. The other reason was availability. For the past few months at least I haven't seen the TUI ammo in stores when doing the gun store circuit. When the crew showed up with it and I did a search of the stores I buy from online and it was not available there either we decided to instead go with the easier to find choice incase it proved to defy expectations like ended up happing with the MHP.

@Th3BaconNation those rip rounds are the bane of my existence. People who buy those shouldn't be allowed to procreate. I take great satisfaction in knowing the naval surface warfare awarded black hills a $30M contract for the honey badger bullets. It finally shows we're getting some traction with the fluid transfer bullets. Now I can tell those RIP enjoyers, "If RIP were so effective, where are their contracts?"
