Very good video! I've been weekend camping in my Highlander for quite a while. I'm considering the new Sienna because of the headroom, it is very important to make yourself comfortable when you can sit straight . Highlander is just not tall enough inside. As the day getting short in winter, people stay inside the vehicle is longer, and another thing is very important: cooking inside the vehicle. When it's dark + cold outside + bad weather, the ability to cook inside is very important. I have solved this problem in my Highlander. Another thing I'm think is carry a microwave oven, in many times, after a long trip or hiking, I just do not have the desire to spend more time on cooking, get a quick warm meal and hit the sack are all I want to do. Microwave oven is a perfect fit for this purpose. Please continue share your Sienna modification video , it's very joyful to watch them :-) Thanks!

Hi Jack, thank you for watching and sharing your experience camping in Highlander. We have been thinking about a microwave as well. Finding a small one is our goal to save on gear space. We found that using an inverter or a backup battery like Jackery to boil water is also a fast way to prepare food using lyophilized food in pouches. This is particularly useful for quick lunch brakes when driving. I think you will be happy with a hybrid Sienna as your next vehicle. Cheers!

Thanks for this video and channel. I just bought a 2023 Platinum and Toyota has done much better with the seats. My driver and passenger seats are very soft and comfortable. I'm actually thinking about setting up a desk over the passenger seat because I want to utilize the comfort.

This is my dream car camping vehicle ! For me though, a very close second to the great mileage (which you didn't mention ?) is being able to run climate control all night ! Whether it is 20F, or 85F with 95% humidity ! (I've done both) I have done a LOT of car camping in my 2019, and now, 2022 Prius. Three 4500 mile round trips this year. Oh, as for the sound system, I have yet to hear a true audiophile system in ANY new vehicle, EVEN the ones that cost a TON, and are marketed as high end. I'm very much into high end audio, and always put in my own system, in every new vehicle I buy (some special considerations in a Hybrid vehicle though). The sound system in my Prius is heavenly :) I'd do the same for my Sienna camper van. I was glad to hear you say how quiet the interior of these vans is. Maybe it wouldn't even need additional deadening. Nice :) Anyway, I will NEVER own another vehicle which isn't a gas electric / hybrid. And NOT a plug-in either. No time for that.

Hi Chris, thank you for your comments! I agree with your experience with car audio systems. The road noise typically is the main issue for music, so we listen to audiobooks when driving. The quietness of our Sienna on the road is primarily due to acoustic glass on the Premium trim, definitely a must have for long drives. @@Tellvia awesome 🙂 Hey btw, although I've built big, rediculous car stereo systems in other vehicles (I've been doing car audio for 40 yrs) the system in my Prius only uses a single strong 8" sub, in a custom tuned enclosure, and a 5 ch 900 wt amp. Very much a balanced sound quality system. I think the same system would work great in a Sienna 👍

Thanks for the update. We have about 15,000 on our 2021 Siena Limited. Have found the mpg to be very dependent on cruise speed as you would expect with large frontal area. Most Texas freeways are 75mpg limit and you must drive 85 to keep up with traffic. Our mpg drops to 31 at 85 and about 34 at 75. We.get 36 if we drive 55 on local two-lane roads.

Thank you for watching and commenting, LG. You’re absolutely correct about the dependence of mpg on driving speed. On many of our trips we drive on Hwy 101 in CA which is quite windy, so on average we cover distance at ~55-60mph. On that section of the drive we see fuel efficiency as high as 38mpg. When we get to hwy 5 with a 70mph speed limit, the fuel economy drops precipitously. Drafting another car/van traveling at the same speed on cruise control improves mpg values, but that does not happen very often. I think the Sienna has a very aerodynamic shape, but the frontal area is big. One day we may all be driving in a convoy of cruise controlled vehicles drafting from each other :). Cheers!

I am looking for a new vehicle and love something that is versatile. I have always owned trucks and used my caped box for camping. I have followed your whole conversion and I think this may be my next "adventure" since there is an AWD lifted model coming out. Great work and keep the ideas flowing. Thank you for the inspiration!

hybrid powertrain is the best option for camping. get the 1200W inverter option. don't expect a lot for the lifted woodland version. that trim is only less than an inch higher than other trim. lol you may consider a 3 inch lift if you want to go a little off roading.

Thanks for the updates! Really appreciate you sharing positives and negatives. I have two comments, one is about the db at 50MPH. Did you measure these or these are quotes from other sources? The difference seems substantial. As you are aware sound every 3db it doubles in volume. These values seems to be all over the place on who is testing it and what scenarios its being tested, like smooth tarmac vs washed out concrete roads. For example Tesla Model 3 is very quiet on smooth tarmac, but moment we get on to the washed out concrete roads, it sounds like drum all noise transmitting via suspension to cabin and everything resonating. 2nd one is a suggestion: I do agree with your comment about bed allowing us to sit straight is important. Hence we want to bed to lower. I was wondering if you considered a hitch mounted low profile storage (roof mounted add noise, wind resistance). This way things that does not need to be conditioned can be stored, and still allow hatch to open. If the top is flat surface, you could use as bench.

Hi Chinna, thank you for watching and commenting! Your points are valid. The reason I provided the noise level for Sienna at 50 mph speed was to make my test comparable to the results for other cars shown on the table in video that are cited from a popular Alex on Autos automotive reviews YT channel. I don’t know on what surfaces they test other cars. I choose highway 50 in Sacramento area as a representative road for my tests. I believe that the main reason Sienna is so quiet is because it is equipped with an acoustic glass (available only in Platinum trim) for the windshield and front driver and passenger windows. In addition, and in contrast with Teslas, Siennas come with very soft (comfort, not performance) tires that also contribute to quieter ride. You are right about the logarithmic dB scale, even 1 dB in noise level is noticeable. Regarding your second question - I am working on a second version of the bed platform for Sienna, with the main objective to lower the bed hight. The challenge is were to store all the travel/camping gear. We a trying to avoid a hitch based attachments because of the towing driving dynamics on highways and small narrow roads. Cheers!

Excellent video, I've very much enjoyed followed following your build. I'm also very interested in your thoughts on specifically the cooling ability of the toyota hybrid system during the warm to hot months. This would be my number one reason for the hybrid sienna as I have been cooked out of too many trips the past few years during the summer.

Thank you for watching. I am glad you are enjoying my videos. You may have seen my video about Hybrid Sienna HVAC use for camping. Here is a link to it kzread.info/dash/bejne/lKKbtKixmbzHl7w.html. It may answer some of your questions. To sum up, the hybrid system manages the level of charge in the battery very aggressively and turns on the gas engine to recharge the hybrid battery more frequently than in prior generations of the hybrid system. It’s done to prolong the hybrid battery life and Toyota now gives a 10yr warranty for the battery. In my test at 87F outside and with the HVAC set to mid-seventies temp inside, the gas engine kicked in every 10 min or so and ran for 3 mins. The gas engine noise inside is very low and it will be comfortable to sleep with it on, but frequent turns of the gas engine off and on could be annoying at night. The I day shot the video about using the Sienna HVAC at the campground, we ended up sleeping in a tent because of a ‘NO gas engine or HVAC compressor’ rule between 10pm and 7am at that and most other CA campgrounds. If you plan to camp in the wild or at a rest stop this should not be a problem. I hope this helps. Cheers!

My SO and I camp around our home state of NY and am aware of "generator hours" yet, nothing comes to mind regarding a rule on vehicle engines. I like to be considerate to other campers, and could see how this may be a disturbance with the frequency of engine starts. The second generation Prius seems to be the sweet spot for my budget and camping requirements at the moment. Thanks again, looking forward to your future videos!

Thank you for the updates on your Sienna, you do a great job on your videos! We have a 2021 XLE FWD Sienna and use it mostly for road trips as vans are no doubt some of the best road trip vehicles. Question for you, does your Platinum have Acoustic front windows do you know? It would either say Acoustic or have a picture of an ear near the writing on the windscreen/windows. When we were looking to purchase one, it was not mentioned in the brochure or any specs online if the limited/Platinum versions had more insulating windows. Our XLE seems a bit on the loud side, so I'm curious. We previously had a Lexus LS with air suspension and no lie, the Sienna rides about as softly, amazing for a vehicle half the price! Our mileage unfortunately isn't as good as you are getting, we're averaging 34.8 MPG over 2,700 miles. I find on the freeway it cannot achieve 36 it is rated at even only going the speed limit (no more than 70 mph), but we live in a bit hillier of an area. Going 75-80 will return about 33 MPG which is still good for what it is, but it's so hard for us to get the 36 on the highway. Around town or back roads however, it can easily get well into the 40s if you drive it for mileage. Very satisfying to drive on EV only. Sorry to go on a bit of a tangent, but thanks again for your updates and glad your Sienna is mostly working out for you guys!

Hi Paul and Rebecca. Thank you for watching and for your comment. Our Platinum trim Sienna does have acoustic glass on driver and passenger windows (says on the windows). This was one of the selling features of the Platinum trim for us. Regarding the mpg readings we - found that leaving the van in the eco mode rather than in standard or sport, greatly improves the miles/g both in city and on highway. In ECO mode you have access to the same power when needed, but because you have more range in the gas pedal movement from low to full power the gas is used more efficiently. The same is true when driving with the radar cruise control ON - the van accelerates to a target speed a bit slower to safe fuel, but on highway most people drive within 0-5 mph difference in speed anyway. Enjoy your Sienna and happy travels!

Thank you for watching, Cain. The van can be set to stay ON only for an hour and then the system shots down. So it not practical to use it for staying cool/warm at night unless you are prepared to wake up every hour to restart the van. On FB when I asked if it is possible to camp on the new hybrid Toyota Sienna like the Prius, which many people use (as I have read) that the hybrid engine acts a level temperature sensor, that people can keep the heater/ac on without turning on the engine and that you can plug in your electrical appliances without inverters etc. and someone told me to go to your videos but you only mention bedding etc. (FYI, there is a company that makes a kit to make it easy to convert and then making it convertible so you can slide it in and out when you want a camper or daily driver, Rive leaf camper kits,) but nothing about the electronics, I suppose I have to go to forums to find more about this, never mind, as Gilda Radner used to say on SNL, just scrolled down and saw your link explaining that, thanks, I will do that now, but it would be a good idea to add in your introduction that for the explanation of the electronics of camping in the Hybrid Sienna is to go to this link...

To use electronics/appliances in hybrid vehicles, the vehicle needs to be ON for this to work. This doesn’t not meat that the gas engine will running when the car is turned on. Since there is a hybrid battery, some of the battery energy can be used for appliances but only via 12V outlets, if the vehicle is not equipped with a DC to AC120V converter. Eventually the gas engine will automatically start to recharge the battery. Cheers!

Thank you for watching and commenting. I don’t use a roof rack or carry extra luggage on the roof because it greatly reduces the aerodynamics of the van. At 70mph, with luggage on the roof, the fuel efficiency is reduced by up to 30%. The total weight capacity of the roof load is only 150lb and the luggage stored there in not readily accessible. Plus, the roof load, creates extra noise in the cabin at speed. I hope this is helpful. Cheers!

Hi Ray, thank you for watching. Jackery batteries can only be charged by 110V AC or by solar panels. Solar panels from Jackery have output of 22V DC, so the 12V car plug would not charge Jackery battery. I tried using solar panels for charging Jackery battery and returned them. Two solar panels in parallel can charge battery at maximum 120Wh rate, which means it would take 12.5 hours to charge our 1500Wh battery, and that is in full sun. The inverter provides sufficient power to charge our Jackery and power the refrigerator, when vehicle is driven. Our AC inverter in Sienna charges Jackery 1500 at a rate of 15% of charge per hour, while running the fridge, that is connected to the battery, as well. I hope this answers your question. Cheers!

Thanks for the update! Have you tried again using the climate control overnight to heat your camper while sleeping? I know there seemed to be an issue not being able to run it and have the doors all locked at the same time, but someone suggested a fix for that issue.

Hi Ric, thank you for watching. After you turn the van ON the driver’s display shows a message/selection “van will turn off in 1 h/ keep van ON” where you can select to keep van running. This message is displayed only for about 10-15 sec, so it is easy to miss. Regarding the locks - you should be able to lock all doors inside the van with a key bob with engine running. To keep the engine running and lock all doors from outside use a small metal key (emergency key) inside the fob. So far we did not need to use the heater overnight, and the campsites we stayed prohibit engines running after 10pm, so I can not share first hand experience on the topic. Cheers!

Thank you for watching, David! We had an Odyssey as our family vehicle with three kids in early 2000s. It was a comfortable and reliable vehicle we all enjoyed. The primary reason for purchasing Sienna this time was its hybrid power plant. Toyota has perfected hybrid technology for the past 30 years and Toyota’s general reliability and resale value are well known. We use our van primarily for long distance highway driving and its excellent fuel economy is hard to beat. We chose Platinum trim to get acoustic glass for the windshield and front passenger and driver windows which greatly contributes to the quietness of the cabin, especially for highway driving. I am sure Honda kept developing and improving their Odyssey over the years. I would take both for a drive and compare. I hope this helps. Cheers!

Thank you for your informative videos. I'm seriously considering the Sienna. I do a lot of long distance driving and currently have a old minivan where I can easily remove the seats. I'm 6'2" and can easily fit and sleep in the back with the seats removed. Will I be able to stretch out in this van with the seats pushed forward to the max? What is the distance from the back seat to the back hatch? You indicated that it works for you - How tall are you? I've seen the KZread video on removing the seats and it looks easy enough (certainly not as easy as a van designed to remove the seats) however, my concern is the relentless error message indicating that there's an air bag issue. The video shows a little dongle designed by the contributor (that he says you can purchase from him) that fools the system but I'd be concerned that the whole system would malfunction with this solution. Do you have a better solution for turning off the error message? Oh and you mentioned in 1 video that you are a serious cyclist and backpacker, both passions of mine as a mid 60's dude 🙂 Thank you and happy trails.

Hi Kevin, thank you for watching! I did use an airbag bypass dongle based on web research. I did it at my own risk and don’t provide a recipe for my solution to others for liability reasons. Regarding the bed size - I am 5’11” and our 72” mattress fits nicely in the van and works great for me. Glad to hear that you are an avid cyclist as well😁. Cheers!

As a part of our Sienna buying process we soul searched for how much we’d want to go camping off-road and have concluded that for us it will be a very low chance. Two reasons: first such vehicle alteration will reduce Sienna’s resale value and reduce it’s prodigious fuel economy, and highway driving dynamics, and second, because we feel more secure at campsites and like the predictability of reservations. More videos about new aluminum rig additions are coming soon. Cheers!

Does your Sienna have the 1500watt inverter? I'm on list to get the 2022 Woodland. I wonder if there is a way to hook up solar panels to charge the battery to run the inverter?

Hello Sunny, thank you for watching. Yes, our Sienna has the 1500W inverter option. This inverter is powered by the running engine only. There is no way to invert power from solar panels to 110V. However, many car appliances, like a refrigerator, can be run by the power from solar panels, directly. I hope your Woodland edition will arrive soon!

Can you run van at night for air conditioner?

I have no trouble getting 45 to 50 miles per gallon going 55 mph in mine

I'm a single man, no kids. Plan to trade in my 2020 4runner ORP for a 2022 XSE Sienna. Turn it into a camper. I know nothing about hybrids though. Going to have to do research on them. Is there away to use the entertainment system say a movie while vehicle is off? If Toyota brought the Hiace van to to states. I would get one.

You can keep your car on for heat or air conditions all time to comfort sleeping. not sure the camp site will allow for you to run your car on 24/7 ? thanks.

Most of campgrounds have a curfew on engine noise between 10pm and 7am, and I talk about it in the video. The sound of engine cycling every 15 min could be an annoyance inside when sleeping. So, realistically using HVAC for cooling/heating at campgrounds it not an option. We camp mostly on the West coast where nights are comfortable regardless of the season. Cheers!

We have a Sienna build using 'Eric Enjoys Earth' method and can agree that the setup you have looks tedious and would get tiresome to use quickly. Lower bed with more headspace is the way we went and don't miss the lack of storage underneath and also removed the overhead entertainment to get more headspace there as well in case that helps, took only a few minutes to remove, held in by clamps on the corners, just pop it off, my .02 watts.

Thank you for watching. The roof-rails on Sienna support only 150lb of weight, so unless it is for small children, the load on the roof will likely be over the limit. The folded tent on the roof will also be noisy at speed and will reduce fuel efficiency. Roof-top tents look cool at campgrounds but climbing the ladder in middle of the night can be tricky. Cheers!

You did not mention that the hybrid gives the option of having efficient AC or heat when you need it. At least I assume this is the case since it’s a hybrid?

Thank you for watching! The most important options on Sienna for us are AWD and 1500W AC inverter. If you will mostly be using your van for camping and don’t need a bench seat in the second raw seats, I would recommend Woodland addition instead of 25th anniversary (only 2500 copies of 25th anniversary will be produced and likely, will be difficult to find and less discount). The Woodland addition has higher clearance from the road, has AWD and 1500W inverter included, and it costs about $1,000 less then 25th anniversary edition. Cheers!

@@Tellvia Could I ask why you need AWD? If I am in a place with no snow, is awd necessary? MAYBE i might go to a mountain once in a while not offroad, so the snow gets cleared very quick. But generally just for city driving. Cons of awd I have heard: 1) uses more gas; 2) another technology part that could malfunction; 3) awd requires all four tires to have equal wear, so if a tire blows out and I replace that one tire and the other 3 tires have 50% treads, then that might mess up the awd system. Would love to hear your thoughts!

So you need a bigger vehicle OR you need to build something like Eric Enjoys Earth or Bob Parks has installed.

Our USB plug for Android auto and apple car play stopped working. Doesn't charge and doesn't display. It's a shame considering we plugged the cable in when we got the van and never unplugged it since. 2021 sienna platinum awd

Is the second raw seat at Toyota Sienna Hybrid easy to be removed?

Thank you for watching, Mark. The second row seats are easy to remove (4 standard bolts). Toyota states that they are not user removable because they have airbags built in the seats and disconnecting them requires tech expertise. Cheers!

Do you have any experience driving the van on snow?

Thank you for watching! I have not gone skiing this season yet, so I don’t have experience driving Hybrid Sienna on snow. From my past experience with other cars - dedicated snow tires make more difference on snow than any four wheel drive system. I hope this helps, Cheers!

Hi Luke, thank you for watching. Our Platinum trim model has acoustic glass on passenger and driver sides. This makes a big difference for the road noise reduction. I don’t know if every Lexus has this feature. Cheers!

So the sound quality even in the top trim is lacking??

@@Tellvia Is it the JBL sound system in yours? That is the upgraded system. I may be less discerning than you, but I feel the sound is very good in my XSE trim. The kids and I have been listening to both Robinson Crusoe and Oliver Twist via Librivox app and they sound fine. I don't have issues with a book I'm listening to from the Audible app when driving alone. Just curious!

@@kristenburgess4053 Thank you for your comment, Kristen. Sound perception is subjective, indeed. My comparison comes from situations when I am a passenger listening to music on my Apple headphones and feel inspired to share a song with the rest of people in the cabin. The contrast in sound quality was jaw dropping; instrumental cords and vocals that inspired me to share that piece sounded dull and unimpressive via Sienna sound system connected by a cord to my iPhone. In another instance, we almost stopped listening to an audiobook because the narrator’s voice sounded so raspy. We had a hard time tuning out that raspiness using the bass/mid/treble adjustments. It is hard to believe that our Platinum trim has an upgraded JBL system, but I checked and it does. Perhaps this JBL system has not been optimized for this vehicle yet. Every new vehicle interior shape and dimension variations cause unique sound interferences that need to be accounted for in a new sound system design.

I don't think Toyota was making these vehicles with "audiophiles" in mind

I love Toyota....and your valuable videos. But wtf are they 🤔 thinking. They have multitudes of Trim Levels. Why don't they listen to the campers Out Here??????? We love Toyotas Dependability Why can't think give us.an Empty Flat Cargo Van No Seats, No.Console AND EXTEND THE ROOF It seems like it would be a much easier and cheaper build. Just one more Trim Level A Camp Model Forgive me I feel there Giving us the.middle finger By forcing us to Choose NONSENSE...CRAP WE DONT NEED OR WANT.
