Everybody runs out buys or refurbs analog consoles! Yay. Finally. Sounds great, really fun, this was what it all was about, for decades, just like this. 🙏 Nothing like building a sound and pushing into the voltage into circuitry of an analog mix bus.

The Trident sound to me, is kind of the same sonic character as the Mäag stuff. That very clean neutral sound but still with some thickness to the sound. That's the closest i can describe it as. Love the video Andrew 😀Would like to see more console content!

The first Board I learned, was a TRIDENT 80B... This brings back So many memories... TRIDENT Consoles are absolutely UNSUNG... The Pre-Amp & EQ section, can be summed up in 1 word...AMAZING!!!!

Great video Andrew! Have you tried using the Bus Plus in mid side mode in your master bus chain? I’ve been having lots of fun shaping the sides and tightening the center with it! Definitely making my mixes better - Now I have to get a new master bus compressor for glue - thinking SPL Iron … thanks for putting out these fun videos!

Great content as always Andrew! I'm new to this, and I have a couple questions. Wondering if you save your settings after mixing the session. I imagine you would want it to be easily recallable so you can get back to where you ended up easily and make more tweaks, etc if desired. I would also LOVE if you did a video on how you do the routing in/out of your console. If I were setting up a console I feel like I would end up with a dozen patch bays, it would be awesome to see how you approach this. Thanks again for the amazing work you do to share your knowledge!

Seen you on your other channel. Very clear run through of what you are doing. Like the sound of the Trident 68 and the SSL Buss. The Trident has always had a good reputation and it will cost a few dollars more.

Outstanding...... a Very similar setup here. You may want to try this..... Bring up your DAW L&R "mix" on channels 1/2... AUX send from your DAW, post-fader, channels 3/24....... Now, you can solo 1/2 DAW "mix". (solo bypasses the master buss, no point in monitoring through 2, as your "mix" will likely already have gone through it) Using the AUX sends will allow you to "perhaps" change gain settings to your desk, without disturbing the "mix" balance. NOW..... You can A/B the DAW MIX on 1/2 and try to beat it on channels 3/24.

This accoustic guitar is so good. Is this a ribbon like Royer and Trident Mic Pre?

You just opened my eyes to getting a console it would be nice to break away from the daw

This is almost 100% how I mix. Don’t own a Trident unfortunately. But rocking an older Soundcraft that sounds pretty darn good. lol. I don’t have the Bus+ YET. I use the SSL Fusion and SSL GBus clone from Audioscape in its place. The insert in M/S mode is awesome to use too. EQ and Neve 542’a in MS is something very cool to try on Mix Bus. Love love this vid

@@itsstudiotime one thing I was going to mention that I am sure if you were to go into deeper dive is using those bus channels to parallel mix in the hardware. The way I do it is on the individual tracks the ones I want to parallel with hardware I send to the L/R and to the Submix. Bring in the submix/bus to the parallel level desired. I also use all kinds of outboard gear on the console inserts. Apologies on all my comments, these types of videos (hybrid) really pique my interest as I love to see how others do it. Thanks again!

Great sounding mix! How do you use your TC Electronics digital VU during the different phases of creating a track (Tracking / submixes / final mix, etc)? I think it would be a good tool to confirm what I thought I was hearing in terms of frequency problem areas.

It's a digital input, so I take a split of my speaker inputs and hit a little A/D converter that sends into the clarity m.

Thanks for the video! Great console! What I ask my self is don't you fear any repairs on that one? Even if it is new, stuff breaks and especially with consoles it can be a horror fast (like with their Toft boards years ago). Do you have someone who could do it? It's what keeps me from going down that route on a really expensive level …

Fender P Bass (american pro) to Radial JDI -> API -> AS 260 -> WAEQP -> pro tools. Drum kit is a vintage 68' Ludwig. Kick is 22x14, used a Beta 91 inside, and a Lauten audio FC357 on kick out - AEA RPQ3 -> pro tools.

Thanks. This gives me a much better sense of the 68. I'm considering getting a 78 at some future date when I have $40k CAD to blow. ;-)

Been a long time follower of your studio tour channel. I picked up an Alesis X2…it’s no Neve, API but would like to try mixing in hybrid. I am an Apollo user and was wondering if it’s going to benefit my mixing using this hybrid approach? Is the mere fact of sending channels through an analog path, regardless of the console, a sonically superior workflow? Do you send your L&R master bus to a stereo channel in the daw as the printed mix? I only have 8 line I/o on my single Apollo with and adat pre. I can only send 8 ch from daw. Would I use sends from daw and use console as a summing mixer? Since my console is an inline with large and small fader, I could have 48 ch. I would have to get a few more audio interfaces to take advantage of this. How would u approach this if u were in my shoes? Thanks!

Nice work! Question though... I know you're sending your drum bus over to the bus section. But what are or what are you doing for the stereo tracks in your DAW? Sending it to there as well or are you able to send it out to 2 individual tracks on your console? Thanks... Keep rockin'!👍🏾

Appreciate it. The routing is up to the user. In this mix I go through how I have these tracks routed in 4:00-9:30.

Great video! 2 questions: Since you have a 24 channel mixer, are you using an interface with at least 24 inputs and outputs to send and return to and from your mixer? 2nd question: does your protools session have 24 tracks in it that correspond to your 24 channel mixer or did you have to subgroup a few things in your session to accommodate the amount of channels your mixer has? Thanks! 🙏🏾

The interface has 32 IO, and yes some of the tracks are in sub groups. (Kick mics, snare mics, programming, percussion)

I'm just getting into hybrid mixing. I got my Midas Venice U32 sitting here right next to me, and I hardly use it. I know how great it sounds because I've done a mix through its smaller brother the U24. I'm just having a little trouble visualizing some things. I'm sure if I were a little more knowledgeable about working with consoles, I would be able to sue out more answers in your video...but I'm not. lol The feed we're hearing from your Trident. Is that just going back into your DAW through the busses on the Trident? How do you print that feed back into the session? Just as busses in the DAW session? Or, do you print each source back onto its original track, then and into busses in the box? I ask because my current setup allows me to go 16 channels out from my MOTU 16A and then down to only 8 channels back from the U32. The direct outs on the individual channels are pre-EQ. So I have to take all outs from the monitor/aux/master section of the board. Just trying to figure out the best workflow approach. Any advice would be most welcome.

Very cool gear I have a question not necessarily about the equipment you were using but how do you keep the dust off of your equipment I am super paranoid about just getting down into controls and you know the old static thing. So do you cover your stuff when you're not in the studio for you know a day or two or especially your mixing console I'm preamps and all those things I don't even let my guitar set for very long without either putting them in a case or I have blankets I throw over top of them to keep the dust up I'm sorry about getting an air purifier better my heart official that is I just wonder what you do in your studio

I don't do any of that. I just dust stuff occasionally if it looks like it needs it and vacuum. My vacuum has a hepa filter and I keep an air purifier in here that's always running, also using a hepa filter.

Hybrid mixing is great thing, I always add something little bit extra to "finished" mix, just because you don't have display and RTA and you just think about your stereo bus like "ok this is muddy, lets add some highs" and bam, way better. It is just more about listening and you don't have to click to open some plugin, you can just try it right away with physical knob. But recalling is pain, it is almost impossible - that is why some of the gear is not fluent, but it is clicking so you can count the clicks and than recall... But mixing consoles are not :/

Could you explain the inserts, sends and returns a little more in-depth... I just started buying some hardware and still a noob with it I want to know how are you recording into your daw? Are you tracking all at once or are you tracking and then re recording after with effects?

It's a great question - maybe i'll make a video breaking the process down. Everyone does things differently, and each session is a bit different. In this case - the song was written, my buddy and I co-produced the song. We did a recording day where we focused on each part - hired a couple session players. I record using outboard mic pres, some things have compression or EQ on the way in.

Do you do what Greazy's been calling "mix-level tracking?" I noticed you were able to just throw faders all the way up and have a pretty decent balance from that point. Or did you have some of those levels set in your ProTools sends?

I generally track and mix as I go in the session. I want everything to sound as good as possible from the jump, and then when it’s actually time to run a mix down, most of the work has been done. Automation, sub mixes, compression, EQ, fx are happening in the box, and on the board. But if I don’t have a board I want to be able to do a bounce and it be 95% there.

Nice vid! I’m curious to know why most meters don’t show almost any signal at all…? Are you tracking at very low level in your DAW? What level will the T68 bar graph shows for a 1khz sine tone at -18 in your DAW, per example?

Center of the meter is 0dB, top is +15dB. Signal gen at -18dB shows up at -18 on the meter which is one green led out of the strip.

It's an old 60s ludwig kit - the snare is a modern WFLIII 1909 aluminum snare.

Drums, bass, acoustics, pedal steel, electric guitar, percussion, and programming all done here. The dobro was an overdub outside at a session musician's spot.

I'd like to, but the workflow isn't super conducive as I'm jumping between projects multiple times per day. The board doesn't have automation and automation is one of the biggest parts of a great mix, or at least how I get a great mix. For example in this video - all of the automation is happening in pro tools as well as a lot of the heavy lifting of the mix. However everything sounds great running it through this console.

Yep. Everything in the daw is going to the trident. Yes lead vocal is hitting mono channel as I use one mic on the singer. All stereo fx go to separate fx out on trident.

Parrallel compression is in mono ? Why ?
