HVAC Service Training : Troubleshooting a Trane Heat Pump System

In this video I troubleshoot a system that is not heating. Do not try this at home! HVAC training is required. Town & Country Air, Inc. serves the greater Wilmington, NC area including New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick, Bladen and Duplin counties.

Helped my girlfriends dad fix their furnace last week. They were out of town for the weekend and came home and the thermostat said it was 54° in the house even though it was set on 69°. This was the weekend when it got down in the negatives. But long story short turns out that the white thermostat wire for the auxiliary heat was never wired to the thermostat. So they have lived there for 5 years and took this long and that cold outside to notice it.

Nice troubleshooting talyn875 Sometimes the issue is obvious like that one. Bad duct system. No one realizes all the problems it will cause.

Awesome video Zack. Man... ohhh man... what in the world was the person thinking when they installed that Flex Duct Lol. Must have been a GONE WRONG DIY Project and the person said "the hell with this crap, it's staying like this!" It looks like a Hamster Play House! LMFAO! Great job as always my bro.

great video zack. Quick question for you: Why did you just order two new limit fuses? Instead of, getting a complete heater pack?

Filters are either blocked up like you had in this one or they're changed right before you get there. Gotta love homeowners.

Do you find it hard to get an hr rate when no one seem to have money. that's a big problem for me .I can always trouble shoot a unit in an hr, some times I'll go for hrs. Then everyone thinks you make to much money.

EUGENE KAISER as I get older I just shoot them straight. I tell people that I work 85 an hour and I will do a good job. I let them decide what they want. If they think I am screwing around to make time they can fire me.

Please help if you can. We have an XL20i with the TAM8 unit installed and it defrosts roughly ever third time it runs when the outside temp is under 36 degrees (inside 68 degree). Old unit did same and Trane replaced outside unit for free last January but the new one is doing the same thing. I have screen prints of the thermostat that have even showing running 15 times with ten defrosts. By the way, almost all of the defrosts that we have witnessed have been been "wasted" with no vapor exiting unit and no frost or condensation on the coil. Have you seen this and if so, how did you fix it?

+Oliver Kassem what was the diagnosis when they replaced the unit?

  • @oliverkassem2421

There was no diagnosis. They had replaced the defrost board and two sensors and it did the same thing. They they replaced the unit last January and the defrost cycles are pretty much as they were before. One installer said his guess would be the personality module, the board, or intermittent sensor issue. He must be referring to the coil and air temp sensor and the defrost board but have no idea of what a personality module is. Is that a separate board?

talyn875 just match the part number (for temperature) - it's a Microtemp 25A ceramic thermal fuse (or equiv) then try (or whoever): www.northamericahvac.com/furnace-microtemp-fuse-limit-stc86283-g8am0400-144c-degree-thermal-cutoff-switch/
