This video documents steps I've taken to resolve my 20+ years old Carrier HVAC system's blower that keeps on turning on and off on some days.

One of the most educational videos made by a homeowner I've ever seen! I am having exact same problem and my A/C unit was replaced (entirely) 4 years ago, so, 'brand new' but I know if call people to watch the problem would cost much more than just have the part and replace it. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Thanks for the feedback. One of her HVAC technician told me it was common to see old. HVAC units last 20 to 30+ years, but he’s seeing new units starting to fail under 10. So I’m trying to keep old unit run as long as they can as long as parts of reasonably cheap to replace.

It’s very annoying and likely repairman will try to get us to replace the entire unit. Just $120 control board plus labor should fix the issue and delay the new replacement for several years.

@@DIYLifeSkills Hey when you said delay new replacement. Do you mean when it does the off and on thing, it is an indication that the whole unit is getting closer to fail and break? Like the new motherboard will hold it off for a few years then you have to replace whole unit or just another motherboard replacement?

Awesome help, fan runs for a while and stops, .... then will start again after a while as compressor keeps running, changed Capacitor it read 6 and is a 10 so was weak replaced it but did not keep the blower running I bet it is the same issue you had, your video could be a huge help to many with the same issues!! Appreciate you and your video.

Until you get the control board replaced, you can turn off the unit for 30-60 minute to let the sensor cool down and it’ll turn on and off normally for a while, which can be 1/2 days long to multiple weeks long. Thanks for the feedback and let me know the outcome when you get it fixed.

Thank you so much for the video you don't know how long I've been looking for a video like this My AC unit upstairs keeps going on and off the blower Air conditioning works great The heater works great it's just that after they shut off the blower stays on then goes off 4 minutes later goes on then goes off so I'm going to go ahead and try and just turn off the power to it and then restart it and see if that helps if not I'm going to replace that motherboard I'm pretty sure I can do it I'm an IT guy. I just couldn't figure out what the hell it was I thought it was a capacitor also. But thank you so much for spending the time and being so thorough about everything even showing how you found the motherboard that's the next question I was going to ask right before you showed it. You're the best. Oh I forgot about your part on American home shield they're a bunch of thieves they never fixed anything at my house I told them My pool pump wasn't working they said oh that was my fault when they came over I didn't maintain it you don't maintain a pool pump they'll make any excuse I had them for a few years and they never fixed anything I put my money in a separate account now I have over $7,000 and I pay for it myself which doesn't even cost me a few hundred stay away from those companies

For me I had to turn off the power for at least 30 minutes for some sensor to reset and to able to start and stop the blower correctly. I tried to talked about this in detail with several technicians but their answers were there are too many sensors and it’s not easy to pinpoint which is going bad and they would have charge for several hours of troubleshooting. I’m also IT guy and do all sorts of DIY, and after watching them do it, I feel that was easier DIY than some of cat repairs I’ve done. BTW, capacitor is for starting the motor only and it doesn’t get involved in shutdown. If you blower fails to start, do replace the capacitor which is even easier. Only caution is make sure you turn off the power to the unit disassembly, and for capacitor, discharge the current it’s holding using a long screwdriver (you can look up such video).

Great video! I agree with you about the home warranty. I had a warranty when I bought my house and they came up with excuses to not pay for my AC, washer dryer or dish washer. Total scam!

They did some of the stuff but put up a fight on anything that was going to be costly. I should’ve canceled it long time ago. BTW, that old AC motor ran too frequently too long due to the main board problem that it finally crapped out. So I’ looking at $500 blower motor replacement. If they can’t do it this week, I may attempt it myself.

Yeah looks like when the motherboard gets hot, the sensor gets confused and keeps on stopping and starting the blower. Once the motherboard was replaced, that symptom went away.

  • @DIYLifeSkills

Sounds like same problem I had. Based on my research, one of the sensors on the control board stops working when it gets hot. You can verify this by turning off the power to the unit for 30-60 minutes for the control board to cool down, and if it starts and shuts down normally, then you have the same problem as I. I suppose, if you are electrical guys, you could test and replace just the sensor through soldering, but since this board is only like $125, it’s easier to just replace it. The repair guy was trying to scare me by saying it’ll be hard to find and could cost as much as $500, but I had already found an HVAC store that had it so I picked it up and repair guys just replaced it for me.

Mine is doing the same thing. Blower motor runs for 3 or 4 seconds, shuts down, then runs for 3 or 4 seconds over and over, causing the compressor outside to keep running and freeze. I shut the system off for 30 minutes until the thermostat display goes blank. If I try to turn it on before the thermostat display is blank, it does not reset the system. I was thinking it was a thermostat problem. I have a Carrier system that does not have a capacitor on the blower motor.

  • @DIYLifeSkills

@@gruntbot1227 if your compressor and outside fan run and cool then its not your capacitor. This seems to happen in hot summer when AC is constantly running without giving time for HVAC system inside the house a chance to cool and then the sensor doesn’t report correct signal to start and shutdown properly so it keeps on turning off and then back on. Mine is carrier too, and replacing the motherboard fixed the problem for more than a year now.

@@DIYLifeSkills I have a 2016 Carrier System that does not have a motherboard. It has eight components mounted to the sheet metal in front of the blower and then wires running to the motor. Two of the components are limit switches that I checked for continuity. One of them failed intermittently. I ordered two new ones from Amazon and will install them next week. I will let you know if that fixes the problem.

  • @gruntbot1227

@@DIYLifeSkills While waiting for the limit switches to arrive, I did a full cleaning of the evap coils top and bottom using a vaccuum, then foam, then coil cleaner. What really surprised me is when I pulled the emergency float cut-off switch located right next to the evaporator drain. It was just covered with white gunk and was blocking the drain line. I had been pouring vinegar down the drain line but the access pipe is after the emergency cut-off float switch so I never thought to check it. I let the system dry for a full day, fired it up, and after 3 cycles, it began working normally. I change the filter every 3 months, but that gunked up float caused the water to back up into the evap coil and created a mold nightmare in the coils. The system must have an airflow sensor somewhere on it because once the airflow improved, the system fixed itself. Crossing my fingers that this was a permanent fix.

I meant to ask you earlier. How much did they charger for labor and parts? Also, since I let this condition go on for I think couple of years, my blower motor bearing eventually wore out and started making a lot of noise. So I paid another $500 to get that replaced. Hopefully I can get another 5-10 years before I have to replace the whole thing. LOL
