Ive got myself a cross of a husky/malamute and hes an absolute beast of dog. He dwarfs both breeds coming in at 97 pounds and having paws comparable to bear paws. Hes a very loving dog and his best friend is the cat. My cat had kittens and he guards them with his life.

For those of us who are blessed with a Malamute in our family, there are interesting intangibles left off being mentioned here. Malamutes are by far strong dogs than husky pound for pound. And Malamute is generally 15 to 20 pounds adult heavier than a Husky to booth. Their ability to pull very heavy things is second to none in the canine breeds. They are almost equally as fast as husky, and though a slower than some dogs like Sheppards of Rottweilers, they are no by no means a slouch in the speed department. Husky only true advantage is it is more agile. However there is little doubt an adult Malamute would easily overpower a Husky in paw to paw combat in a clash. But would it ever come to that, no because Huskies and Malamutes are just almost always great buddies and best of friends. Husky seems to be by far a more vocal than the two dogs. They are both incredibly good hearted breeds with people and other dogs. Huskies seem to have a bit more gas in the tank energy wise when it comes to nonstop running around but again both breeds definitely are terrors outdoors without a leash. They do what they want and when they want it. Both are smart dogs and understand the owner has zero ability outside unleashed to enforce rules as they are far too fast and far too clever. This is not to say they are not loyal, but outside, they do seems to make choices as living for the moment and we will figure out the rest later than the other way around. Malamute probably being a bit more defiant of their owners than Huskies on average. If you just want to have a husky or malamute because there is no dog more good natured or loving than them, I would suggest the much more manageably husky as when they pull on a leash because a bunny or squirrel was stupid enough to be in line of sight of one, most people can counter that. An adult malamute, well you are not going to teach the prey drive out of this breed and unless you have some physical fitness and strength, you are going to be taken for a ride against your will. Less than a 100 lbs person, they probably stand no chance on their own of stopping the mighty malamutes forward progress, only slowing it down a bit. Another thing not really mentioned is a malamute most definitely will defend their owners and family to the death if need be. They don’t look for a fight, they don’t want to fight, but should they feel their family is in immediate danger, they will warn first and if that does not work, they will go absolutely postal. Their bite PSI is over 400, with their weight and strength especially in the neck , this is not a dog you want hell bent on ending you. It seldom would ever get to that point as malamutes rarely ever attack humans or other dogs with bad intentions and will become uncharacteristically vocal to avoid fighting, but should you be in the crosshairs of this breed, you would wish it as a Sheppard or Rottweiler because malamutes are very tough doggies. Like Husky, Malamutes can be injured, but it takes a whole lot more for them and huskies to back down as they can take damage and stay on task, their task of end you. So many people get this part wrong they are terrible guard dogs. They may be a Jonny come lately because they are nice natured, but should you gain the wrath of these dogs, they are incredibly dangerous as both have incredible power in biting force, they are not trained to restrain and hold a a body part, they goes to instinctual mode which means goal is you die by all means available. I would give husky the nod with smaller kids. While malamute is a lovable doggie, it is strongly independent and when it wants me time and is annoyed it can’t get it, they do get a bit more agitated. Compounded by they are larger and stronger than husky, they will push their dominance onto the situation. Husky is a pact dog. They recognize a hierarchical order and even small kid that they are strong than they will know their place in the pact rarely harm a pact member. Malamutes do not share this concept with Husky. Malamute conversely are “lone wolf” type alpha sigma personalities. The realize and are loyal to their family, but their place on it is more a kin to I’m not as strong as this one, but I am stronger than this one so therefore the one I’m stronger than will either respect that or be made to respect that should it come to that. And because both breeds are clever and cunning, Malamutes will plan on waiting for the opportunity to have that one on one talk about respecting them to said party of family. I would advise Husky in the case of small children being in the family as Malamute does hold a grudge if he feels he is being disrespected by a person they don’t see as having that right to disrespect them. Again, if they shift to physical aggressive mode, this is one of the top ten most dangerous breeds hands down. Their bite strength alone can shatter bones. All that said, if you have a deranged husky or malamute that is just dangerously aggressive for no good reason other than they want to harm everything living, you really should never own any dog or animal because Huskies and Malamutes, there is no nicer good natured mischievous dogs than these two breeds. The worst thing you should ever have to deal with is their warped sense of humor as both breeds love to be playful tricksters and just be with and engaged with their families in good spirits.

Thanks for taking the time to share in detail your insights regarding the pros and cons of each breed, it's much appreciated. I had a beautiful Husky mix for 16 years and can confirm your observations are spot on - a perfect addition to this vid! My buddy had all the typical Husky traits you mentioned, just that he wasn't overly talkative. But when he was, he made it perfectly clear you'd better listen! And yes, he had a sometimes baffling sense of humor, always teasing and making fun of me. Sometimes, when he was mad at me, he would do things on purpose he knew I wouldn't like, then giving me a look as if to say: Watch me now! Aaand? What are you going to do about it? We should never underestimate how intuitive dogs are....they know every trick in the book how to get us. All the best!

Mine is a Husky Sheppard mix!!! One of the most loyal, guard, and even saved the life of a fellow Veteran!!! The Vet in question had an alarming drop in blood pressure that kept him in the hospital for almost a week. He ended up having a Stent in one of his arteries from blockage!!! He is my hero, because when my P. T. S. D. kicks in, he grabs a toy and won't take no for an answer by forcing me to play, by redirecting my attention!!!

For the letting off leash one, I think that’s a lie. Malamutes do have very high prey, but they can easily be let off leash when trained right. My last malamute was amazing off leash at the end of his walks. My current puppy even runs out the door and goes pee, then comes back. We also let him off the leash daily for running in our backyard. However, is he would see a rabbit, he would chase it into the woods.

I would say that higher energy level from Husky's is a negative thing. Means you have to give them more of your time. And plus their stubborness. I would choose a Malamute over Husky any day of the week.

The dog that is closest to the wolf is the most intelligent and adult-like. Lack of trainablity is not indicitive of intelligence. Cats are also smarter than dogs (and I love dogs), and they are usually harder to train.

It's also due to the fact that cats are only semi-domesticated. Can't properly compare the two as the two species are wired completely differently. One species is a pack animal that thrives on companionship and being part of a team (whether human or canine depends on the breed) the other species are mostly solitary and again only semi-domesticated vs dogs who've been completely domesticated for thousands of years. Made easier BECAUSE they're pack animals. But I agree that trainability isn't a fair judge of intelligence. Just because an animal is stubborn or more independent does not make them less smart. Likewise, dogs that take direction better aren't more intelligent or less so. My German Shepherd (while dependent on me and looks for my leadership and guidance) is more than capable of thinking for himself. It's just they're a more obedient breed and it's in their nature to please humans given what they were bred to do. Huskies are more independent as they have to think about the pack as a whole. So, they'll disobey a human if it's in the best interest of the pack. For instance; if they're on a trail and see a threat or danger the human doesn't, they'll want to steer their pack clear of the threat and will ignore the human's commands to do so. Malamutes are typically more relaxed and have to be properly motivated to do something. It's not that their dumb, it's just they're thinking 'what is the point of this? Sure, I could do that, but I don't feel like it.' Not too different from Huskies in that regard. Just for different reasons. Huskies refuse to do something because they like to challenge your leadership and can be mischievous and headstrong. Malamutes are typically stubborn and refuse to do something just because they simply do not feel like it. Lol. Of course there are ALWAYS exceptions.

I have always owned Alaskan Malamutes & right now I have a female Siberian Husky & a male Alaskan Malamute. My male Malamutes have always been more obedient & can always be let off the dog leash whether at the dog beach or dog park, they have always been a lot more affectionate in nature than huskies, not to mention Malamutes are very chilled & not escape artists, my female Siberian Husky is affectionate but more aloof, if I left the front door open, she would make a run for it & never, ever listens to commands, so it’s essential that you do go to dog training classes with this breed. I could never let her off the lead. I find male Alaskan Malamutes a lot more affectionate & loyal than female Mal’s but Siberian Huskies seem to have the same temperament whether male or female. Both are beautiful breeds but demand a HUGE amount of grooming & daily exercise, so if that isn’t you, then don’t have them as pets because they will become destructive when bored which is sadly why there are so many of them that are dumped in shelters.

I think Malamute is stronger than the Siberian Husky, i believe a Malamute can be potentially one of the most dangerous and feared dogs in a fight till death with another dog despite them being outwardly gentle and calm. Malamutes if forced to fight I think would be capable of taking out a bully & rottweiler . I had one many years back

Your point system made no sense. You awarded both positive and negative attributes. Both are amazing breeds for the right people obviously. As stated, they have a lot of differences as well as similarities. Both were bred to do the same thing but have different ways of doing it. I think they complement each other quite well. A lot of people end up with both. Malamutes for that extra bit of protection on the trail to protect the cargo as well as their other dogs, due to their size. Huskies for their agility, speed, and stamina. Between the two, I'll always have a soft spot for the Siberian Husky. But both are incredible breeds.
