Husbandry of garden eels in a mixed reef setup

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Today I want to talk about the husbandry of garden eels in a mixed reef environment. I have long wondered how these little creatures poop without dirtying their burrows. Please do watch till the end of the episode to see how, should you have the same question as I had.

    Thank you! I'm using Red Sea LED 90. I think most lights on the market today are good to go, but equally important are the trace elements that stimulate the coloration of corals.

    Love your reef! Love the Eel! Can more than one Garden Eel be kept together in a reef tank? Perhaps the Eels would acclimate better to the tank if there was more that one Eel? How do you keep the allelopathy from the soft corals from hurting the Acropora? Do you use activated carbon for this purpose?

  • @zzyz

    @zzyz

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you Mack. I haven't tried two simply because I can't tell their genders. Two of the same gender will probably fight given such a small space. If you are lucky to have two of different genders, then they sure will adapt better. And yes, can't agree more. I use activated carbon exactly for that purpose.

    Can you share a similar video on Bubble Tip Anemone. In a relatively small mixed reef tank, how do you handle free floating RBTA and aggression issues?

  • @zzyz

    @zzyz

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you, I've marked down your suggestion. To make anemones stay put, let their feet fit in rock crevices and surround them with branching live rocks to support their bodies when opening. You can also use the branching rocks to help avoid their aggression towards nearby corals. No need to worry about fish. They are smart.

    Is it okay with you? I really liked your aquarium this excellent, I wonder if you can tell what are your parameters of the performance of your aquarium and what kind of filtration ? And what salt do you use

  • @zzyz

    Thank you! I've always kept chemicals as stable as possible. The detailed figures are as below: - KH: 9.3 - Ca: 440 - Mg: 1320 - NO3: 5 - PO4: ~0 - Salinity: 1.024 I use the filtration system that comes with the tank (Red Sea 250). It's simply two blocks of filter floss. I also have a big stock of biopellets to house the bacteria. In addition, I have a skimmer and active carbons. In terms of salt, I use Red Sea Coral Pro. I'll shoot an episode on system and maintenance in future updates.

    With a garden eel could I keep one with a 1 and half inch deep sand or should I get a 2 and half inch deep?

  • @zzyz

    @zzyz

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, 1 and half inch deep worked in its quarantining environment, but 2 and half would be better.

    so you never disturb or vaccume the spot where the Eel borrowed in when doing water changes and maintenance?

  • @zzyz

    @zzyz

    2 жыл бұрын

    Sea cucumbers will do the job cleaning the sand bed. Garden eels will sure be disturbed if I do it myself.

    What about all the detritus that settles in the sand? How do you clean it with a garden eel? Do you drestroy its burrow each time?

  • @zzyz

    @zzyz

    3 жыл бұрын

    Garden eels poo outside of their burrows, which I talked about near the end of the episode. They tend to keep their burrows free of detritus. I once stirred the sand to see what's inside, but there was not much in there, at least not fish poos. They have been decomposed before they got a chance to get inside the sand.

    Don't stir a deep sand bed! Get critters to turn over the top 1 inch. Anything you do deeper to it kills the beneficial bacteria and risks a tank crash. Don't stir it!

    There are plenty of supplies of garden eels in local fish stores. But most of them are spotted garden eels. This yellow one is a rare species which I procured by luck. Acclimation is the key to garden eels surviving in a mixed reef environment. Make sure you have a peaceful quarantining tank for acclimation.
