Hurt - Nine Inch Nails (Bardcore | Medieval Style Cover)
Музыка
Greetings all! I'm back with another bardcore cover, which in some ways is a cover of a cover. Hurt was written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, and famously covered by Johnny Cash only 7 months before his death. I'm throwing my hat in the ring with a somewhat unusual take on the theme, but had to stop myself from bawling while recording even with the altered lyrics. Some of the words resisted change of any kind. No matter the context, this song gets you right in the human frailty.

The art:
A heavily altered Miniature of Conrad III of Germany from Chronica Regia Coloniensis (Cologne Kings' Chronicle; Cologne; ca. 1240). Brussels, Bibliothèque Royale, Ms. 467, fol. 64v
Lyrics:
I fell upon my sword
To see if I could die
I woke upon the morn,
And still I was alive
The arrow tears a hole,
The old familiar sting
The fates hold out my thread,
But cannot cut the string
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I love fades away in the end
And thou couldst have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let thee down
I will make thee hurt
I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
Thou art someone else
And I am still right here
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I love fades away in the end
And thou couldst have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let thee down
I will make thee hurt
If I could start again
A thousand leagues away
I would keep my oath
I would find a way

Each version of this song is a different story. The original NIN is a young man having a breakdown, Cash's version is an old man with regrets, yours is an immortal who can't escape life. All so beautiful they can bring me to tears, just in different ways. Bravo, Lady von Blingen.

Ive noticed her methods for lyric changes are essentially to keep the changes minimal, and make changes make sense. So the song gets adapted to old english (which doesnt change much). But she then picks out words and phrases to change to make it period accurate. For example, guns arent a thing. So any mention of guns and bullets gets adapted to bows and arrows. Another good example, for her rendition of rising sun, she changes New Orleans to Orleans (really damn lucky the song was about a "new" city, with an old european city that shares the same name). The meaning is still the same, but it becomes about a brothel in a city in France rather than one in the nonexistent Liousiana. It seems like most bardcore covers just adapt it to old english, but dont take the time and effort to adapt the lyrics to their time period in such clever ways. She does. There is a purpose behind every change. Abaolutely meticulous.

After hearing Johnny Cash's version, Trent said something along the lines that it wasn't his song anymore. Hearing this version, how could you not love that voice singing it? :)
Man, took me way to long to notice the change in thee king. Nicely subtle
I had nearly given up hope for another release. This does not disappoint. Heavenly vocals. Gives one hope for beauty in the world!
So I'm about 10 years younger than my older brother, and this was his favorite song and I grew up listening to it. This bring back all the memories. I have to say I enjoy this cover so much!
I cannot believe how great this is. Your lyrics are so enchanting, the changes you've made feel so on point, and it just has THE most unique feeling
I'm totally bawling with you! your angelic, clean and emotional voice is just perfect on this, nothing less. Goosebumps up and down..And I'm so happy you've uploaded another song. We definitely need more of you
Beautiful melody🎵🎶, beautiful voice🗣️🎤, beautiful visuals😍. The queen👸 of Bardcore has returned!🎉🎈🎊👏🤸💫
I came here as fast as i could. Always a pleasure to hear your voice enchanting a new song every few months. Keep it up. You are making something beautiful.
Oh...the MOMENT I saw this I needed to check it out. You have no idea...Thank you Hildegard!!!
"Oooo I love these, these are hilarious." *immediate chills* A hauntingly beautiful cover, I really appreciated the unchanged lyrics in the mix. It really gave them extra emphasis, and certainly made an argument for them being timeless. Hope you are well, take care of yourself :)

Just found out you had a spotify, I hope you choose to upload it!
I don’t think anyone really appreciates how clear the vocals and seemingly perfect for the genre this is❤
"The way is shut. It was made by those who are Dead, and the Dead keep it, until the time comes. The way is shut." Incredible cover. Thank you for this.

Good luck!
Not often some one has such an ethereal voice, no matter the song, she entrances ..
A medieval audience would probably see this as being about Cain or the Wandering Jew, the legend of the man who taunted Christ at calvary, and was thus forced to walk the earth until the Second Coming.
Suddenly this masterpiece was made even more beautyfull.
Your finest work to date! It's hard to sum up just how perfect this is, but I will try... On a day when nothing has gone your way. When it's rained from dawn 'til dusk. When you've received tragic news and your heart is breaking from the pain. When all seems lost and for nought... this song pierces the gloom like a golden arrow; a radiant, angelic voice that transports you away from your woes, lifting your spirits and your heart high above your troubles, restoring your faith and bringing hope where there was none before.... Thank you once again for sharing your magnificent, magical talents with the rest of us.
This is fantastic! The changes to the lyrics work great for an undead character. My immediate assumption for that character art is the King of the Dead from Lord of the Rings (Rioc).
Thank you to the algorithm for sharing me with this only 1 day after its upload instead of 1 year after. This is an astounding cover. The dying king is a fitting touch.
Always an unexpected delight when you upload, and a wonderful job as always!
If anyone here hasn't seen the video of Trent Reznor performing a duet of Hurt with David Bowie (one of his biggest musical influences) I highly recommend it. Trent can't stop himself from smiling the whole time. Honestly incredible song, the fact it's been iterated upon so many times in so many different ways is really something special.
unreal how well it translates - I could so imagine being in an olde tavern and hearing this - very cool how the skulls fade in, very nice artistic touch and fitting
Your finest work yet. Hurt is such a powerful song. The original NIN version is my favorite, though Cash's cover is amazing.
Wow !!! This is So Beautiful !!! Now perhaps my most favorite cover of Johnny Cash's original !!! I love medieval music, so it's Doubly Perfect !!! Thanks for sharing !! xo

Nine Inch Nails is the original. Johnny's version is a cover. He did the cover at the suggestion of his producer of the American albums, Rick Rubin. The original is on NIN's album "The Downward Spiral"
This is magic. This is changing the world just because it changed me. Thanks you for this aweseome piece of art.
Coming back to this after re-watching Higlander and paying attention to the changes in the lyrics really makes me think of a "young" Immortal after his Quickening but with no one there to tell him things and the pain he feels about not dying with his loved ones... As usual Hildegard knocks things out of the proverbial park with her covers.
and just when I needed her, she returns! thank you for bringing joy to my world, especially as it's exam season here in the uk
One of my fave songs to play on piano and sing, and I have a special place in my heart for the original and the Johnny Cash version. You did not disappoint, Ms. von Blingin ❤

I keep forgetting this isn't a Jonny Cash original. Now I'm going to forget it's not a Bardcore original
Beautiful, as always. Glad to see you're still around and doing this! I was excited when I saw your community post. Had no idea it was this. Genuinely, such a beautiful cover.
Wonderful work! The lyrical changes really enhance the style without diminishing the sting. Could tweak a couple more places ("I will give thee hurt", "Could I but start again"), but it's a testament to the powerful simplicity of the original's lyrics that they don't need much translation, even to mock-Shakespeare. Humans have always been human, with such big feelings that they struggled to articulate!
Man, this was so moving! You altered the lyrics only a little bit compared to your other covers, but, as you said in the description, that is necessary. Your voice is angelic and the backing vocals at 3:23 gave me goosebumps! This is almost as good as Johnny Cash's cover! Really one of your best! I can't help but wonder how people from the Middle Ages or Renaissance would feel listening to this cover. Would they feel as moved as we do?
