Before and after w/ the Hurst and MGW plus CHE torque limiters. Both shifters are great but the MGW is well worth the money. $340 for the MGW and $180 for the k-member with torque limiters but its smooth now and still incredibly short. The MGW is set at 6 turns in the video and is fairly new. I may also do a full 10 turns and see how short the throw is.
Like I said both are great but the MGW is better in almost every way besides price. The Hurst ate through the gasket in a matter of months.
**I also have another MGW review in my 08 Corvette. Great quality piece.**

    I've gone from a hurst to a barton then to a mgw, and honestly there is no comparison. The mgw out performs the others by leaps and bounds. If you want a short throw, just pay a little extra and go with mgw.

    Actually in all fairness, I've owned both and in my opinion I love the MGW far more. I did nothing extra on either shifters and the MGW shifts from 1st to 2nd perfectly in my 2010 Mustang gt. the Hurst however I can't same the same for. So for my vehicle and my experience with both I'm all MGW. But for those searching please do your own homework and see what's a better fit for you.

    In this video I am running with a Pypes offroad H-pipe, Pypes Violators axleback and the stock headers. I liked the sound it had probably the most. Not too loud but still sounded aggressive. The other setups I did later on down the road where nice but had issues with trumpeting and other annoyances.

    The Hurst is a great shifter for the money. It wasn't completely the issue with the grinding but it was causing the rough shifts from 1st to 2nd. The way it's mounted causes the linkage to get out of alignment and sometimes grind or just not go into gear until well after you press the clutch pedal. If you do decide to get a short throw I would either go right for an MGW or get the Hurst with a K-member support and torque limiters.

  • @Kadorja
    @Kadorja11 жыл бұрын

    It was a combination of the MGW shifter, CHE K-member support w/ torque limiters and new pennzoil trans fluid. The MGW is a nicer shifter and felt better in my opinion but if you're grinding it's most likely due from the transmission going or too much power that's torquing the transmission.

    Yes I usually always took it to the rev limiter. It came on pretty quick with the 4.10 gears. Never seemed to bother the car too much. I've heard that with cams you shouldn't go over 6800 and I've also heard the car can take 7000 completely stock its up to you and whomever tunes the car in the end.

  • @Kadorja

    Just the standard competition plus shifter. From what I've read it's a 40% shorter throw than the 30% the billet comp plus offers but that may be why it was fairly notchy.

    @Whitedealer07 Its a lot smoother and easier. I enjoyed the Hurst while I had it but I can definitely say the MGW is worth it. I had it set at a very short throw in the video. I actually turned it out from 6 turns to 4 and its a lot less notchy than it was and I raised the handle up some. With it so short and low it was hard to shift as fast.

    @BOUNTYWAY Over stock im not sure how much of a difference it would be. I had a few times at very high RPM where I couldnt shift into 2nd at all and once I hit 350hp it was pretty tough not to grind. I would constantly double clutch or shift at 5500 or so to avoid grinding (rev limiter is currently at 6800). With the CHE k-member and torque limiters I can peg the rev limiter and slam it into 2nd with no problem at all. Its pretty easy to install yourself too. Definitely worth the $180 or so.

  • @Kadorja
    @Kadorja11 жыл бұрын

    6800 and she's still running strong. A lot of guys on the forums are running 6500-7000 with no problems. I wouldn't recommend hitting the rev limiter often but honestly after owning the car for a few years I never heard of anyone hurting the engine by over revving it. It was mostly burning up clutches or having too much horsepower for the stock block.

    Let me know how it feels and I hope you enjoy it. I have one for my Vette now and it's definitely a lot better than stock in that car as well. I can't say enough good things about MGW.

    I wouldn't really said I regret buying my Hurst. It was an improvement over stock but the piece was far from high quality. The jump up to an MGW is always a lot no matter what the car but it's worth it in my opinion. You just have to feel the shifter and see how much better its built but if the Hurst works keep it till it falls off.

  • @deecee4644

    I don't think the Hurst shifter is the issue for the 1st to 2nd grind. The factory shifter does the same thing once in awhile in my 09 GT. I always assumed it was because I didn't have the clutch pedal fully depressed when trying to shift. I'll be buying the Hurst for my car. Not because I think it is better per se, but because I am 54 and have always had great luck with them. You can pound the piss out of them and they keep on going. And besides, I think that MGW looks like shit compared to a Hurst.

    @BlownTPI383 I haven't had any issues like that with the MGW so far. I did just recently drop it down to 3 turns and its still a very short throw but it stays perfectly still in every gear. I would double check and make sure everything is snug and mounted right. Is yours on an S197? I know with my transmission once I switched the fluid out to Pennzoil it definitely made everything feel a lot better.

    Does your MGW have slop while in gear, like 1st, 2nd and 5th? I just installed mine and it has slop while in gear. It's much better than stock but I was wondering if the slop is because of the remote shifter design.

  • @Kadorja
    @Kadorja11 жыл бұрын

    The MGW is worth the extra money. It has a lot more quality parts and you can change pretty much everything about it down to the height of the shifter or even the angle to the left or right. After the install you will turn the shifter linkage all the way clockwise as far as you can. That's the longest throw. The more turns to the left the shorter and notchier the throw becomes. Max on an S197 is about 10 turns. Hurst was ok but it was loud and way too notchy.

    Manual transmissions have transmission fluid or oil in them. I've changed the transmission fluid in that car before to improve it's performance. Do a google search for transmission fluid and you will find "ATF" which is automatic transmission fluid and manual transmission fluid. Metal on metal contact at high speeds (transmission gears) without oil wouldn't last for too long before something heated up too much or simply wore out. ATF fluid is for lubrication and hydraulic pressure.

    What kinda ball is the black one in the beginning of the video?

  • @Kadorja
    @Kadorja11 жыл бұрын

    It could be any number of things. Clutch may be worn out, the torque might be letting the transmission flex the shifter too much or the transmission may be worn down. First thing I would do is change the transmission fluid. I believe Pennzoil Synchromesh is the best choice for the S197. After that if it's still acting up go with the K-member bracket w/ torque limiters and then the shifter. The way the MGW is mounted helps a lot but it may be something cheaper that fixes it.

  • @freezerlunik
    @freezerlunik7 жыл бұрын

    So... maybe there's something I don't know but AFAIK grinding going into second would be due to synchro rings, not anything to do with the shifter. I mean sure, maybe the shifter can be tweaked to REALLY cram it into gear, but discounting the RPMs at the time and the synchro performance is probably a bit silly for comparing shifters.

  • @Kadorja

    @Kadorja

    7 жыл бұрын

    freezerlunik The S197s had a terrible remote mounted shifter. The back half is mounted to the frame of the car while the front was a long and skinny metal brace attached to the transmission itself. The transmissions did torque heavily which wouldn't allow the shifter to properly line up. If it was the synchros alone it wouldn't of changed a single thing with the shifter and brace but up until the day I sold that car I had no issues with the MGW.

    Since it's adjustable it's up to you but even with the longest throw it was still noticeably shorter if i remember correctly. The shorter you adjust the MGW the notchier feeling it will be but some enjoy that shift feeling more than others.

    Chevyblock 550 I agree the Hurst is a great shifter but the MGW lineup has always been much better quality. They're expensive but they produce an amazing shifter. As for the install it was 100% correct. I was a lot younger in this video but I did my fair share of wrenching on this car in particular and know it was on the way it was intended to be. I've done everything from the grill, hood scoop (including cutting the hole), CMDP install and long tube headers. A shifter is a walk in the park.

    The Hurst wasn't too much effort but you could feel how notchy it was. Didn't feel like it was gliding in but you didn't need to force it either. The MGW will differ depending on where you set it. I initially had it at a very short throw but it was a little more force required than what I was looking for. I lengthened the throw and moved the handle a little higher which felt a lot better. Overall I think with the MGW on a similar throw distance as the Hurst it will be smoother with the MGW.

    They bolt up to the k member support and transmission. Limits the twisting of the transmission from engine torque so you don't lose power and helps the shift linkage line up during high rpm shifts. Less missed shifts/grinding.

    Larry Broad it's been about 8 years since I installed this part and sadly the Mustang is long gone but it definitely wasn't an adjustment issue. There are no bump stops for this vehicle. It's a remote mounted shifter that can flex under high RPM. The Hurst was mostly thin stamped steel that couldn't retain it's shape. The MGWs base was milled out of a solid piece as well as a much thicker mounting point at the rear and stronger linkage connecting to the transmission. I've owned two MGW shifters and they're one of the best products for the price.
