Hurricane Matthew Was Worse Than We Thought

It's now Sunday late afternoon and our power just came back on after being out from Friday night. Some of this video may be a little dark since we had no power. The power was out much longer than it was with Hurricane Hugo and that hurricane did a lot more damage than Matthew - in fact there was almost no damage with this one. It was very hard to understand how the electricity was out for so long with no real trees falling on the lines.
It leads me to believe the men from our area were working somewhere else that had priority over our area.
Thanks for watching.

You need old fashioned percolator for coffee. Use empty tuna fish cans put tea candles in them use about four. Place in cast iron frying pan, out metal grate or cake cooling rack over and then light candles but thin frying pan on top and heat soup water or whatever!!i have lined my cast iron frying pan with foil. It works good to heat things up takes about 20 min

Another option for coffee is cold brew. I didn't know one could do this until last summer. Just put ground coffee in a "tea bag" (bags for making almond milk, available on Amazon), put into a large glass jar and fill with cold water. Let sit for 14-18 hours, lift out the grounds, and voila! coffee. Heat up as needed or drink cold. Keeps about a week, better if refrigerated, but a few days without power would be fine on the counter.

That was a really interesting video. So many times, we just get to see what happens to residents according to what the news shows us. This video allowed us viewers to see what it's like from a home. It's kind of spooky when the electricity is out, isn't it? And it's sure a reminder of how much we rely on it. I haven't seen a transistor radio since I was a small child, but you got me thinking how important one might be for emergency preparedness.

Hi, Phyllis! I just, saw this - Hurricane Matthew was a direct hit to Sanford, FL. The top of my next door neighbor's fell in our back yard and we had LOTS of branches fall from our big camphor tree. Our power was out for a week. Fortunately, I have natural gas utilities and spent the last half of the week canning all the food that was thawing out in my freezer!

I live in Charleston - Matthew was more of a tree nuisance than any substantial damage (other than some spotty stuff). Hugo, on the other hand, was my worst nightmare. No power for 3.5 weeks, no water for 2 weeks, every roof damaged badly, we lost 40% of our trees, many many people lost their homes, my friend had her house split completely in half by a big pine tree. No stores were opened for days. My granddaughter was born in downtown Charleston on Sept 24, 1989 and her mama had to be taken to the hospital in a fire truck because it was the only vehicle that could make it through the flooding at the height of the storm. I hope we don't have anything like this again, I am just to old to eat beenie weenies and spam for weeks at a time.

The hurricane was hell in Myrtle Beach. We were not in an evacuated area and a huge pine fell right near me in the house. I had no windows but felt the thunderous boom beneath my feet. I later found that the tree just missed my house by inches. Branches were impaled into the ground, we couldn't get them out so we dug down and cut them and buried them. I have never felt so terrified through a hurricane in my life, and this was only a Cat 1. I have been through 3's and 4's. Just glad it's over.

Glad you and your dogs are safe. Look into making cold brew coffee so you can always have some on hand. Especially if you end up without power for several days. Also, my late husband and I used to keep one of those coleman camping stoves on hand for power outages. And a "power outage drawer" where we kept a lot of candles and matches stocked, along with several flashlights. Had a burst pipe here, so a bit of a flood that also filled the furnace with water and mud. Without water for only a few days, but still don't have heat. So nights and mornings here are cold, but not much you can do when you rent and manager/owner really don't want to fix things. Some people just don't understand that prevention and maintenance are less costly. Glad the temps aren't yet down to freezing, so far.

After this only about two hours later the electricity came back on but we still did not have the internet but for a few hours and it went out again this time for two more days. justmikey101 one flashlight and no canned food is a tough way to get through a hurricane. I live off the gulf of Mexico, you have to be more prepared than that. canned stew, canned tuna, crackers, canned pasta (spaghetti Os etc.), canned fruit. canned juice. cookies or candies to keep your spirit up. oil lamps, hurricane lamp and emergency radio.

This is an old video, but there are inexpensive rechargeable emergency lights. You leave them plugged in, and when power goes out they come on. We've had one for more than 10 years and it still lights in an outage. It can be unplugged and used as a flashlight to help you find other supplies.

This would be the perfect time for you to show everyone this stove that I purchased for when the lights go out. It's a fantastic propane countertop stove that will be a huge help when things like this happen. It's called the "GAS ONE GS-3000 Portable Gas Stove with Carrying Case, 9,000 BTU, CSA Approved, Black" $24.99 (Amazon) and I got it because of one of my KZread friends showing it, and liking it so much. You will have to purchase the cans of propane that fit in the stove too, but it's a pleasure to be able to cook and to have coffee when the electricity is out. I purchased a case of the propane, and will most likely get a couple more next week. I'm so glad to know you two, and your "babies" are Ok, it's so nice to know when our KZread friends are not in trouble, because some of us really do think of you when something like this happens. One of my sister lives in South Carolina, and you won't believe this, but her husband Phil, actually caught a flounder in their back yard!!! NO they are not on the beach, but miles away from it, and their back yard flooded. They had to have their entire house torn up last year because of the flooding, and they were really worried that it would flood again. Supposed to find out if it flooded today when they promised to log in and let us know how they are doing. So happy your doing well. Bless, Sheila PS If you post it, I will purchase another one, I need 2, way to many here, for just one stove. PSS These are the propane cans too. "12 Butane Fuel GasOne Canisters for Portable Camping Stoves" You get the best deal when you buy both.

This little gas stove sounds like something that would work well when the electricity goes out during storms.

Miss Phyllis, please get a coleman camp stove and a Melitta drip coffee maker next time you are in Walmart. I would die by 5:30 in the morning if I did not have my joe. If I wake up and have no electricity I rush into the garage and get the stove out and put it on the patio and fix a cuppa first thing. Mr Bucky and I need our coffee!! P.S. I fry out in my garage just like you!:)
