Hurricane | How to Drink
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This iconic drink will help you kick off your summer in New Orleans style- also it's incredibly delicious!
**********************************
Although the Hurricane is most closely associated with Pat O'Brien's French Quarter Bar (just off Bourbon Street) and New Orleans, the drink was actually first served a few years prior at the 1939 World's Fair in New York at the appropriately named Hurricane Bar. The Hurricane has fallen a bit out of favor in recent years, and though I'm not exactly sure why that is, I suspect it's got to do with the effective loss of its key ingredient: Fassionola. Now, Fassionola is something of an industrial mystery goop created by the English Company. It's impossible to find anywhere, but there's an e-bay story where you can buy English Fassionola. Other companies have filled the void with improved versions that are somewhat more accessible, most notably Cocktail and Sons and B.G. Reynolds, but you can also make your own, which is what I did here. A word about English Fassionola, I don't want to seriously malign it, by all accounts this is the real deal stuff that was used at both the Hurricane Bar and Pat O'Briens, so for real authenticity it might be the way you'd want to go, but frankly I think we can do better. So I'm going the homemade route here using a recipe I found on Supercall, and as you'll see in the video I fully endorse that recipe.
Hurricane
• .5 oz. or 15 ml. Lime Juice
• .75 oz. or 22 ml. Fassionola
• .75 oz. or 22 ml. Orange Juice
• 1 oz. or 30 ml. Smith + Cross rum
• 1 oz. or 30 ml. Rhum Barbancourt White
• Shake over lots of cracked ice
• Open pour into hurricane glass
• Garnish with pineapple and stuff
Supercall’s Fassionola Syrup
Makes approx. 1 quart
TOOLS:
Gram Scale
Measuring Cup
Funnel
Swing-Top Glass Bottle or 32-oz Mason Jar
INGREDIENTS:
.25 cup passion fruit juice
.25 cup papaya juice
.5 cup tart cherry juice
.5 cup orange juice
.5 cup guava juice
.5 cup canned pineapple juice
.5 cup fresh pineapple juice
.5 cup apple juice
2.5 grams Citric acid
.5 cup dried hibiscus flowers
4 cups white sugar
METHOD:
• In a saucepan combine all of the ingredients except for the fresh pineapple juice.
• Bring the syrup to a strong simmer, then remove from the heat and cool.
• After the syrup has fully cooled, whisk in the fresh pineapple juice.
• Funnel the syrup into a swing-top bottle or pour into a 32-oz Mason jar and refrigerate.
• The syrup will keep for up to one month in a refrigerator.

I absolutely need that Hurricane Category 1-5 video. But if you’re going to do that, you totally need to make a non-alcoholic version, too, and call it a Tropical Depression.

I use Passion Fruit Syrup and Raspberry Syrup as my “Fassionola”. Girlfriend hates rum, so my Hurricane for her is 1 oz Lemon, 1/2 oz each Passion Fruit and Raspberry Syrup, and 2 oz Ford’s Gin. I call it the Tropical Depression because “gin brings on the melancholy”.

did the best bar crawl ever in NOLA. we started at the hotel roosevelt, then sauntered over to french 75, then meandered over to carousel, then stumbled over to pat o'briens, and then collapsed somewhere we can't even remember
What we have here is a well crafted drink made with quality ingredients by someone who cares. Most tourist bar Hurricanes are the opposite and that's why they're looked down on. Usually made of artificially flavored, ultra sweet, day-glow red dyed corn syrup, tossed together with massive amounts of cheap alcohol and served in a giant plastic hurricane "glass". Guaranteed to come up faster than it went down.

Its too bad that this has become the expectation too, people think a hurricane should be strong like a long island, but thats not the recipe and creates an unbalanced drink. It does a disservice to bars that actually care about having a well balanced cocktail.
Please do the Cat 1-5 episode, I love this show.

Love it. Tasting notes this time was very good. It's also good to know that Greg can get a career singing along with his cocktail skills....
love that you guys put out so much content lately and still remain the quality much love
i absolutely love the background jazz music in these videos. *snaps fingers through entire episode*
the hurricane is one of my go-to cocktails! id love to see the disambiguation and a focus on a passion fruit hurricane
The different types of Hurricanes sounds like an interesting video, I’d love to watch it! 👌🏼

It's so good. The 4 year was the first bottle I bought when I started back up my home bar after years of drinking mostly beer and wine. Rum/rhum is just so hard for me to keep a bottle of.
When I was down in New Orleans I too didn't have a Hurricane and can't say quite why. My cocktail of choice there was the Vieux Carre. Also I noticed Pimm's Cups seemed to be very popular there which surprised me.
Your improvisation is what makes your videos good .simple and playful Keep up the good work man
Perfectly timed! Hurricane season starts tomorrow!
You sir, scared me when you started singing in the beginning of the video, i wasn't paying attention and heard that. Absolutely love the videos, keep bringing awesome cocktails and fun content.

I've been really interested in making Hurricanes lately. I would LOVE to see a category 1-5 episode!
Not gonna lie. You're not far off for the temperatures here in Louisiana. Been hitting upper 90s the past few weeks. Watching this reminded me we need more hurricanes to sip on. Keep up the good work!
I expected nothing less but a rousing rendition of 5 O'clock somewhere as an intro! Well done!
Love the editing done to your more resent productions!!
Always happy to see when a new episode pops up!
You need an hour long special on every drink from a Jimmy Buffett song.
Love that Longines. You should do a spin off- "how to watch"
I'm glad you use super call! I use some of their recipes as well I love their falernum #9 recipe. Best home made one in my opinion.
Fun fact from the Crescent City: Rhum Barbancourt is a common offering to the loa in voodoun ceremonies, which are still an occurrence here in New Orleans.

How To Drink #respect
The Hurricane reference from the country song reminded me of another drink reference from a country song(I know there are many) that also happens to be a New Orleans tradition...in the song 'I'd be Jealous Too' by Dustin Lynch, he mentions how "she comes on stronger than a Bourbon Street Hand Grenade"....I'd be interested to see how that drink is made. Love your show!! Keep being awesome!!
Hi! More about the Hurricane and please more drinks like this one! love them!! keep it up!! love the chanel!
"Category 1 through 5" - when you plan an episode, get everything organised, then riff at the top of it...and come up with a better idea than you had planned. lol - great episode, make the 1-5 one anyway! - loved the idea.
I love learning new ways to deal with ice lol !
Good advice about the hole shaking technique
I've been looking for a good Fassionola recipe! I've tried the pomegranate syrup + raspberry Smuckers thing, and while good, didn't "feel" right. I made a batch of this Fassionola and like it a lot! I used hibiscus tea to tint my batch.
Love all the episodes so far since I started watching a while ago. Especially the more tropical drinks since they go well in the subtropical climate I reside here in Florida. Was wondering if we might soon get your take on a Pina Colada that’s not just pre-mix and rum. Thanks
Making this tomorrow for Hurricane Isaias! Thanks Greg :)
I got my drink!!! Thank you for making this!
Love your presentations, I always want to try what you make.
Yes! No idea if you did this from my suggestion 2 weeks ago but love it!
I love the Editor on the Tasting Notes.
I absolutely love the sass in the tasting notes. It's like a slightly rude sibling giving you crap and it always makes me laugh!
Though I love experimenting and making drinks for people, my liquor stock rarely consists of more than a couple decent whiskeys (whiskies?) and some weird fruity abominations my wife’s friends leave here. As such, this is one of the most enjoyable channels on KZread for me. I blew my D&D group’s minds on Cinco with Palomas thanks to that video. Really want to try your bitter version soon. There’s a distillery here in Pittsburgh that makes excellent Rums, but most exciting is their true Falernum. I’d send ya some if you want to do a video on Falernum. It’s seriously awesome.
Yes absolutely want to see a hurricane variety episode. You could use the “category” system. Cat 5 hurricane!
Awesome content. Great to see the progression. Also, your editor is hilarious. Seriously keep up the sarcasm its great!
Looks awesome!

If I would have to be a little bit more complicated than that but painkillers have different levels based purely on the alcohol by volume content. I would also like him to develop actual different flavors for the different colors of hurricane
I would love an exceptional episode on the 5 different types of hurricane fassionolas
Me and my dad love to watch Matlock together. He would always watch old shows like that, and I started watching them with him
Hey Greg, I love your show! Entertainment and production quality is off the charts! I was curious what the exact songs for the opening and main chunk of the show you use because I love them! Thanks, and cheers!
Great job & show!!
Checking in for the category 1-5 episode!
I think making different versions of drinks and comparing them would be a really cool video to see.
Epic spec for this one! Dying to try one in NOLA!
Love the show, the snarkiness of whomever is doing the add on comments during the show truly makes it. Keep up the good work!
We went to New Orleans for my brother/sister in law's jack and Jill weekend and the best hurricane I have ever had was from the Chartres House restaurant in the French Quarter. We stopped there by chance for lunch and I would HIGHLY recommend it!
My man! Great Friday upload!
Made one of these just last week, interested to try out your recipe!
Digging the Categories idea! I'm a tiki/island style nut anyway, so I'd love to see you do that.
A flight of different hurricanes. Yes please. I want that episode
It's funny that you had the worst Mint Julep there because I had the best one when I went two years ago! Thanks for doing the hurricane, I love NOLA and your channel so bringing both together is great.
You have made my summer.... now I am going to have to make some fassionola
Your editor is on point. These videos are hilarious. Keep it up!
I work @ a restaurant. Cajun seafood. We had a drink made with Fassionola (house made) fresh lime juice, Flor Da Cana Rum & Hennessey. It was dang! GOOOODDD!!!! Also the fassionola was used in a NA soda as well as to NOT waste it & give guests an alternative to alcohol. Nice video! BTW I got a cool hurricane glass from Polynesian Village Resort Hotel, Walt Disney World w/ old school logo.
Please do the multiple hurricane showdown! I’d love to know which is the best in your opinion. Great episode!
MAKE IT HAPPEN!!! Do it like your Winston Churchill episode, but you need to be by the beach!
