Hurray for the Riff Raff on Feminism, Gentrification, Gender Violence & Art in Era of Trump

democracynow.org - When she was just 17, Alynda Segarra, the leader of the critically acclaimed band Hurray for the Riff Raff, left her home in the Bronx and began hopping freight trains. She eventually landed in New Orleans, where she learned to play banjo. Over the past decade, her band Hurray for the Riff Raff has become one of the most celebrated bands in modern folk music. In 2014, the publication American Songwriter named her tune "The Body Electric" the song of the year. NPR declared the same tune to be the political folk song of 2014. Hurray for the Riff Raff’s new record, "The Navigator," is out this week. For more, we speak with Alynda Segarra.

I saw Hurray For The Riff Raff on the day of Donald Trump's inauguration. They departed from their normal set list and Alynda did a solo version of "This Land Is Our Land". She sobbed through much of it.

We had Pete Seger and he was one of our Folk Musicians who stood up for environment and other issues. Some people still follow in his footsteps. This Artist, Alyndra is refreshing.. She is well spoken, originally writing poetry: Let us not forget that poet Percy Shelly said: "Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of Mankind." If you are not working 9-5pm, then you must be canvassing the country, searching, looking and writing music to show back whaz happening, if that's your calling. Best of luck to this Artist.

People keep telling me Riff Raff is not derivative but it just seems so completely derivative -- a couple old Lou Reed and Joan Baez tunes with an additional overlay or pastiche of contemporary political issues.

Calling something art does not make it so, kind of like calling everyone a Nazis, doesn't make it so.

  • @river8477

the thing about art is that it's such a broad spectrum of different mediums that it's impossible to clarify whether something is or is not art. to claim someone is a Nazi, there has to an objective truth to it, if you support a lot of the Anti-Semitic views or even with similar nature to other races our sources of oppression, it can be argued that you are a Nazi. Although there is leeway to argue if being a Nazi would require you be under the actual government of Nazi Germany, or if you have to wave a flag to be a Nazi. Art is much more complicated, if I took a piece of toilet paper and stuck a fork through it, and claim it is art, there is nothing really substantial to disprove it. It's subjective to whether you interpret something from the fork-impaled toilet paper. You can find meaning in everything.

No one considers my comment cringy. They do however consider your desperate, pantie-sniffer attempt to white knight for women that wouldn't let you fuck them if you were the last man on earth, cringy.. Oh it's not an opinion. Feminist art is OBJECTIVELY inferior and cringy as fuck.
