Hunting with a Passage Peregrine Falcon in South Carolina

Ойын-сауық

Chris Durham's passage trapped female peregrine "Cedar Bay" put on a great show with a terrific flight followed by a resounding "thud" as she smashed the duck. Like us on Facebook and subscribe!

    LOVE the video but the music was unnecessary. I always find the actual sounds of nature and environment that birds hunt far better communicates the emotion of the falcon's hunt.

    Bravo! Love those passage Peregrines. By the way, I have lived in Colorado for over 40 years, and these days I see more wild Peregrines than I do wild Prairie falcons. Often, when I'm flying my Jerkins, a wild Peregrine will come in and see what's going on. When they realize it's a Gyr they're confronting, they tend to leave quickly, but they are beautiful, and fun to see. In the old days, I would see a wild Peregrine every 5 years, or so. Now, I'm seeing just as many Peregrines in juvenile plumage as adult. Believe me, they're back, and doing well. I wish the Division would relax a little bit regarding the regs for Peregrines. Most falconers are not willing to work that hard to get a wild bird, anyway, especially when captive bred birds are readily available. Cheers!

    great video, nice to see a falcon in flight. Has California always allowed the capture of wild peregrines? In Colorado division of wildlife is now letting one person capture a peregrine yearly to a random drawing. :) And Happy Hawking

  • @FalconryTold

    Not sure about California, I know North Carolina has granted permits in the same manner as you described for several years. South Carolina just started issuing one permit per year with a drawing (don't quote me on this). Chris Durham won it this year and trapped this beauty off the coast. I believe it was the first wild taken peregrine in South Carolina in many, many years.

    +Falconer's Apprentice Your bird looks like a passage tiercel Tundra. Is that what it is? Sure is a good looking bird, for sure. Also, on your telemetry receiver, is the yagi part of the base? And who makes it? Sorry for all the questions but I'm in the market for a good telemetry unit. Thanks for posting this vid. And "Good Hawking"!

    I'm not 100% positive on South Carolina's regulations but there has been a couple permits issued by drawing each year in North Carolina for several years now. The bird ok this video was the first Passage Peregrine trapped in South Carolina.

    falconersapprentice This is great for falconry. This is great for falconers and more importantly, this is great for the Peregrine Falcon species. When I became a falconer in the sixties, the Peregrine Falcon was almost wiped out. Thank God for captive breeding.

    She's beautiful. My first question after watching it was: Did she get enough to eat before you picked her up from her prey? She was still munching while in your hand. Also, what sort of appetite does she have? How much of the duck could she have eaten? How often does she need to eat a full sized meal like that?

  • @Midas-rf4lo

    @Midas-rf4lo

    They will eat as much as they can between hunts, but you need to regulate it, and whatever they dont emmedietly (sorry my English is bad) goes into their crop for digestion later. Also, even though she was still munching in his hand, they always make sure they have enough to eat
