From the thumbnail I thought this guy looks familiar! Yep I was right, He's my parents neighbor. Same house I grew up in. I remember him having bald eagles -as pets- that were flightless. He kept them healthy and provided a quality life versus being put down. I just remember thinking how crazy it is he has bald eagles

Are the measurements correct in your link? I tried to make this myself and it seems to be a huge perch. 56" across is over 4 1/2 feet and 3+feet deep. How do you even reach your bird to unleash or tether to the eyelet? I really want this for my home, but it seems way too big. I also have a Gyrfalcon so the bird is the same as your video.

I live in a Sub'd. next to a wetlands area in Oregon. We have a resident Coopers"s Hawk that nests in a nearby cottonwood every year. My winter bird feeder which I have set up on the patio table with the umbrella over it, is her "go to" it seems like whenever she really needs a meal. Mourning doves have got hit hard this year. When I hear a loud bang downstairs, I know is a dove flying into the sliding glass door when being attacked. She has gotten 3 this year so far. She is totally unafraid of me, sitting on the fence or in a lower branch of our birch trees. I can get quite close before she moves to a different spot. Anyway, when the babies are young, they scream all day wanting to be fed. Thinking about this year maybe climbing the tree.

I'm in Utah and that was my favorite book series. Thats why I am watching this video. I remember asking my dad when I was a kid how I could get a falcon. Now 25ish years later here I am watching videos on how to get into falconry. I even got my daughter to read the books.

@@Seanph25 It is for me at least, for the time being. When I was a kid, I had enough spare time to do this because my responsivities were fewer. Now being married with 2 kids in the house, a full time job, starting a side business, training my dogs, taking care of things around the house (about to replace 250 feet of fencing including digging post holes)...the free time just doesn't exist to fairly house a bird or be able to fly them enough to be fair to the bird. In a few years I may be able to. Being an adult sucks at times LOL

The background music was detracting from the information (obscuring your voice), but otherwise, great information. One thing I'd add is don't go to meets day one looking for a sponsor. That should be the last thing on your mind. Meet, go on hunts, make friends, build relationships. People (falconers) have their own lives to live and families and jobs and hobbies, and taking on an apprentice is no small drain on their free time. Offer to go out and help beat the brush and scare up game for the birds in trade for tagging along on a hunt and learning more about the birds and sport. Be a resource to make the day a more successful. I've not tested, but I did well on the demo tests I took. I have the passion; but sadly, I just don't have the time right now to properly and fairly dedicate to housing and maintaining a bird for falconry, so I watch, read, and learn. Did you have any issues with the Kestrel footing you more than other birds? The one person I spoke with said her Kestrel footed her more in the moths she had the Kestrel than the following 4 years with RTH. I don't know if that's normal, or if her bird had an attitude problem. Sadly, I think she lost the Kestrel to a Cooper's Hawk? I know they're not pets, but I'd assume most still become emotionally attached to their birds.

I'm try to build a new bc trap for the raptor rescue group I volunteer for. Rescue all types of raptors from kestrels to eagles. Looking for written directions, not just video. The one we have is old and falling apart. Not looking to a camera's or anything else.
