Wondering how match bullets and hunting bullets compare for hunting applications? In this "part 2" story, we'll expand on the muzzle velocity 6.5 Creedmoor testing we did in the first story. This time we'll look at How Hornady's 140 grain ELD-M Match bullet and their 143 grain ELD-X hunting bullets perform in ballistic gel at 400 yard and 800 yard velocities!

This is great stuff. Testing at the lower velocities is exactly what I wanted to see after the first video. I’d love to see more of the same type of videos with other rifle bullets. Maybe stick with the 6.5 for now to keep it consistent and comparable, but it would be interesting to see if there’s any difference in 30 cal.

Great video. It is a well known fact among long range hunters that the older A-Max bullets and the newer ELD-M bullets perform very well indeed at long range. I use the 147gr ELD-M in my 6.5-284 at a muzzle velocity of 2900ft/s and get reliable expansion out to 700m on springbuck. The same with my 338 Win Mag with 285gr ELD-M with a muzzle velocity of 2500ft/s. However Berger 250gr Elite Hunters in 338cal gave me pin-hole penetration (zero expansion) at impact velocities below about 2300ft/s on light game. What I really would like to see in a next video is the performance of the Nosler Accubond Long Range bullets (6.5cal 129gr or 142gr) at impact velocities down to 1800ft/s.

Love the thoughtfulness of your tests. Would definitely like to see the impact that bone has on deflection and expansion. You guys are really dialing in on setting a hunter’s expectation for realistic hunting ranges. Spot on with your point of ethical shot placement. Would be interested to see comparisons of monolithic bullets. (Because my Grandsons are now eating game meat, I have moved away from hunting with lead core bullets.) Therefore I’m shooting lighter bullets at higher velocities and keeping my target ranges under 250 yards to ensure best expansion.

Love the testing methods...excellent data here! It'd be fantastic if you both could do the same for muzzleloader at full tilt and simulated 100-150yd velocities w/ the popular (Eg. Mono-Flex, PowerBelt, BoreDriver, etc) bullets. There's alot of conflicting stories out there with results on large game, so you'd definitely have a home-run Vid with this for the hunting community. Keep up the great work! 👍

Great test with good controls. I know this is obvious but the ELDX has a significantly thicker jacket but much softer core. The idea is for expansion to happen after entry vs at contact. It is very interesting, that penetration was similar based on the design intent. You would imagine the drag on an expanded bullet would result in less penetration. I have hunted all over the world and harvested many animals, including most of what North America has to offer. The ELDX has been a bullet of choice for many years. What I have noticed is exactly what was found in this test. They often do come apart and result in bad penetration. This is often countered with shrapnel acting like a shotgun blast inside the animal. This has been on clean vital shots and shoulder shots. I have also experimented with ELDM loads in both a 6.5PRC and 300PRC. Last summer I took a caribou at 350 yards with an ELDM in a 300PRC. The bullet did not penetrate well at all but liquidified the vitals causing instant death. Personally, I would prefer a bullet that stays together, as it typically stays on path. I’d rather get both lungs than one. As such, and from my own experience, I’d chose the ELDM over the ELDX for a hunting round. I know the engineers at Hornady would totally disagree. I just know, I have had to follow up with good placement with ELDX’s due to poor bullet performance. I would also add - my shots are typically 300-600 and larger game. If it was a Texas whitetail, I wouldn’t care at all.

Your results have mirrored mine very closely. Well done. Have a look at the Cutting Edge Raptor, Lazer, and Maximus bullets. They are designed for controlled fragmentation and perform identical regardless if they are going 3000 fps or 1500. When velocity starts dropping down below 2000 fps a bit of controlled fragmentation really helps to maintain disproportionate to caliber wounding.

I think your on track for good bullet comparison’s. Something to consider is bonded bullet like accbond long range construction and monolithic construction like new hornaday cx bullets or Barnes lrx vs current cup and core jacked bullets like eldx with lock ring design. From speaking and listening to a lot of bullets manufacturers on weather to pass through game vs drop as much energy as possible depends on animal being hunted and what environmental factors are you dealing with along with local restrictions.

Great work once again, you guys are providing such valuable information that actually has some proof to back up the numbers that we just take for granted. I would have expected better expansion at 1800 fps and will be keen to watch the 2000 fps test, as I believe it may well become the excepted minimum ethical hunting velocity with either of those two projectiles. Once you have those results then 2000fps could be the best velocity to test the performance of various manufacturers and even other calibers and be more efficient than going through all the velocity ranges again.

Awesome video guys keep it up! I started watching these videoed mainly because you chose the ELDX bullets which I have had horrible experiences with on elk and deer. I shot a elk at 550yrds with a .30 cal 178g ELDX three times before he died and all shots were lung shots, while dressing him out I found the ELDX bullets had all fragmented. The large mule deer was also shot at 550yrds using a 6.5mm 143 ELDX in the lunges twice, the deer walked away from both shots and I tracked him for 3 miles before loosing him onto private land. I have since switched to Nosler accubond bullets and shortened my shot ranges under 300 yards with great success on a bull elk this year and white tail buck. I’m very excited to see you guys test other brand/style bullets and calibers!

Very good. Very well done. Thank you gents. I set up a 7mm RemMag for elk but didn't make it out west this year. I chose 162 ELDX. So I worked up a lower velocity deer load @ 2825ish. I have only taken one deer so far with it. It was just over 100 yards. So a good bit closer than desired. A high shoulder shot slightly quartering away. Dropped where it stood. Pretty harsh impact. The exit was large as well. I was surprised I didn't loose as much meat as expected. Accuracy is really very, very good with all the loads I have worked up. But it is better suited for elk I think. Looking forward to that 2000fps test.

Yeah I took a big Wisconsin 8pt last year with some factory 162gr ELDX in 28 Nosler at about 350. The bullet would have impacted at about the high 2600's which would be nearly identical to your shot at 100. The exit on mine was devastating as well and the buck dropped right there. The eldx is a pretty soft bullet that is basically just a rebranded match bullet marketed to hunters. I think any of the premium bonded bullets or A frame style would do much better at still dumping a lot of energy without blowing out a 2+ inch exit. Been trying to get my hands on some 175gr ABLR's but they have been impossible to find for almost a year.

On animals the size of Elk it's absolute stupid to use any lead cored bullet because the bullets will slip the lead cores causing more bullets to be used or not even finding the Elk is possibly a problem. I am 63 years old grown up from childhood with a hunting family in the Pacific NW hunting Roosevelt Elk. We always had problems with Elk not going down - not finding them or finding the Elk even miles away from being shot with lead core bullets then came the Barns x bullet that was a game changer, then came the Barns TSX then using the Barns bullets every Elk shot dies in its tracks! The most common loading this the family is a 7mm Rem mag shooting a Barns TSX 150 grain bullet kills then every time.

Also, I would like for you to point out that you need to find your velocity in your rifle to know this. Most folks read the back of the ammo box or what’s listed on a website. But most hunters are not using the 24” barrels that these are tested at among other variables. This information is excellent, but if folks use skewed info it’s not as helpful. Thanks again.

Thanks for completing these tests. Many of us hunted at longer ranges with the A-Max and jumped across to the ELD-M when released. This confirmed what many of us knew, match bullets (at distance) preform better due to the reduced velocity and jacket thickness. Shot placement is super important and know when you can take animals at distance. Thanks again for taking on the feedback from the last video!

My primary hunting platforms are 6.5 PRC and 28 Nosler, so I'd like to see similar testing at higher speeds (3100 fps) as well as the 2000 fps already planned. Understanding bullet construction differences at the higher speeds, combined with the true minimum velocity expectations, will help us in our shot placements to ensure we are making the most ethical shots based on our platform capabilities! Thanks for all the great reviews and providing true test cases. Please keep it rolling!

The buck dropped right there and the exit was devastating. The ELDX is a pretty soft bullet that isnt bonded so I think if it hits much above 2700-2800 its going to act more like a varmint bullet. You will be better off using a good bonded bullet or A frame style. In my experience the accubonds and fed fusions are the best higher bc hunting bullets and the partitions are great as well. If your hunting with the 6.5 PRC and 28 nos I wouldnt worry about min expansion as much. Been trying to get my hands on some 175gr ABLR's but havent seen them in a year for less than $2 a bullet.

@@Nick-sx6jm What's up Nick? I agree and what I didn't say I had a similar experience on an elk a couple years back. I shot a cow at about 230 yards with a 175gr ELD-X. Muzzle velocity with my loads is right at 3150 fps, therefore velocity at impact was over 2800fps. While it was an instant kill shot, one entire quarter was trashed. Seeing what the bullets will do in gel will help determine the proper placement for various distances (based on bullet construction). The reality there is no perfect bullet for all situations, seeing testing like this will help all of us with proper shot placement in at various distances.

The ELD-X actually performed as expected. It is designed to mushroom over a large speed range and provide deep penetration. To do this, it is designed to start opening at relatively low velocity with thin jacket walls at the nose and a plastic tip acting like a wedge to start peeling the lead back into a mushroom. The jacket gets thicker, but is carefully designed to fold back in a progressive manner. This is so when the bullet hits at higher velocities, the thin jacket from the nose peels completely back and some of the lead from the tip is abraded off. This keeps the mushroom from growing so large that it acts like a parachute and prevents deep penetration. In other words, the ELD-X deliberately sheds some of the lead from the initial expansion mushroom at higher velocities in order to keep the frontal area (mushroom diameter) small enough to maintain deep penetration over a large impact-speed range. If you watch gel tests of other bullets over a large speed range, you will see that the penetration of some of them is markedly less when shot from fast, magnum cartridges. That is caused by the "parachute effect" from the rapid formation and retention of a large mushroom (expanded frontal area) which causes rapid slowing of the bullet. With those bullets, a hit at lower velocity often gives significantly deeper penetration because the mushroom never got very large.

You might consider setting the test block on top of another block so gel expansion isnt restricted as much on only one side. Another thing to consider is a bullets working range of penetration. These bullets at 23" of penetration would have passed through most deer and possibly elk too. Obviously the permanent wound channel is a good indicator of where a given bullet dumps the majority of its energy. Good work guys!

Thanks for a very interesting video. I'm considering using Nosler 168 grain HPBT .308 Win loads for Mule Deer hunting this fall. Long before I had ever seen a chronograph or laser range finder, I shot a bull elk with a .270 Win 130 gr Bronze Point at about 30 yards. Of course, the Bronze Point was designed to perform well for longer shots, but the elk dropped in his tracks and when I dressed it I found that the bullet had completely fragmented into many pieces but still got the job done. Interesting results and thanks for the testing and sharing. The more information we have about our loads makes us more informed to make good ethical decisions in the field. I have always abided by the 1000 lbs of energy rule for an ethical shot on deer. I am loading the 147 ELDM which puts me at 1750 FPS and a max range of 750 yards at that 1000 lbs mark. I now know that that is probably not an ethical shot even if I could put one in the boiler room at that distance. Your research tells me that 2200 FPS is 1600 lbs of energy and a max ethical range of 350 yds... crazy. I am interested to see how the 2000 fps test goes.

Great experiments!!! Being 100% honest with you, I have killed a lot of whitetail deer with the 6.5 mm hornady 147 eldm-m with great success with retaining velocities just above 1600 fps. The key to the success at this velocity with this bullet has been shot placement. Shots through the deers shoulders is the key and the environment and the day are always considered before taking a shot with a velocity as low as 1600 fps or just above this speed. Again, the environment and the day will totally dictate taking a shot at an animal with this bullet and with this low of a velocity !!!!

To address the simulated range and spin issue, the idea I have is to download to match the spin at range (not velocity) and then see if there is a ballistic gelatin composition that will match for expansion and then adjust the width of the video to correct for penetration. In fluid dynamics, a Reynolds number is used to quantify the results of reduced scale models and different test fluids. If you find a formula that works for big and slow, big and fast, small and slow, small and fast and middle of the road like 30-30, that would be a pretty good general test like standard ballistic gelatin is for pistols and rifle at close range.

Thoroughly enjoyed your match vs hunting videos. I’m a match user, have been for quite a while both Hornady AMAX, ELDM and now ATIP. Also using the Sierra TMK. I would have preferred if you had used either the 7mm or .30 as these have a much larger hollow point behind the resin tip. Using both these slightly larger calibers and their larger hollow points I think the velocity cut off of the ELDM is extended into the 1500fps and possibly lower range. The 6.5 while very popular at the moment is less terminally effective at the extremes.

Unfortunately, that remoldable gel is notorious for under-expanding bullets and creating smaller wound channels than 10% FBI gel. Convenient for the ability to re-use, but the mix&cool one-time use 10% Gel is, in my opinion, more representative of live tissue. I've shot quite a few ELD-X's into 10% gel towards the bottom end of the envelope and I'm pretty confident what we're seeing here is from differences in test media. We've seen similar things with pistol caliber tests, too, going from one gel to another. Expansion testing done at Hornady is in 10% FBI Gel. V/R Miles Neville Project Engineer Hornady Mfg.
