Quick note Matt propshaft UJs almost give rise to a vibration, hardly ever give a grinding noise ,that grindyness is most likely to be the central prop shaft bearing.
It’s great to see hippo back on the channel Matt. The new tyres look much better, and most importantly safer❤.
Bought a set (5) tyres for my pre war Riley that were 30 years old at time of purchase, liquidation stock, condition was perfect, that was when new tyres were bandaged in waxed paper/cloth so they were protected from UV light and humidity changes. Diff input bearing grumbling? Get the stethoscope or a rod to listen with out.
As everybody else has said I would agree prop shaft bearings. I had the exact same on my 03 freelander. I did them on my driveway. It took me an afternoon to do but it wasn’t difficult as long as you remember to mark everything up before removal. I think there’s videos on KZread as well on how to change them.
Great to see Hippo being tinkered with and some love spent on her with the new tyres. Excellent video as always Matt.
Great to see Hippo, I think the problem is the driveshaft carrier bearing and you had a bit of a shimmy on the driveshaft.
I had the exact grumble when the propshaft bushes had failed. A low grumble and sounded "duller" when rpm rises (but not speed). Pretty awkward to do BUT worth doing before doing the VCU.

was going to suggest an out of balance prop, not that i am familiar, but its central position inside does point in prop direction
My money is either on the IRD at the back of the gearbox the prop bearing or the viscous coupling. Easy temp fix is to remove the prop.. From memory it unbolts easily from the drive flange on the IRD and diff with just 2 bolts holding the centre carrier to the floor. It'll drive round happily as a 2wd for the time being and you can inspect everything once removed.
Great video, Matt. Maybe worthwhile to at least let a garage diagnose it on a ramp? And then decide what and when to do?
These Falken Wildpeak AT3AW are what I plan to fit on my Freelander 2 to change out the current Delinte DH7 3 Peak Tyres. They have good feedback and reviews in the Freelander community so far.
Could be the prop centre bearing. What you need is an Automotive Stethoscope.
I had a Y reg Freelander (diesel automatic) ... apart from the rear window freezing closed in winter ... which is a pain as you only find out when you try to open the boot as that electronically unlocks and winds the window down an inch - when frozen you get a door held closed by the glass ... note that when accelerating in this state the door can open (the glass didn't break, thankfully) and slam shut when you decelerate ... Apart from that they are good cars (though the auto gearbox died on mine). I like Falcon tyres - I got 2 of the zeik ze310 ecorun tyres as they were a good price and had A rating for grip, either be or c for fuel consumption and a low figure (67dB?) for road noise. I was most pleased that my local tyre place had one in when I got a screw in a rear tyre and needed to not use the space saver spare when on holiday later that day ... only one tyre of a different brand (offside rear) now (which is the only tyre I've had a blowout on, though I'd put it as the least likely to be damage).
Suggest you change the oils in the differentials and see if there's an improvement
Ask Bendpak to Sponsor you with some lifts like they seem to do with all the US KZreadrs.
In my range rove rl322 I got it with a low freq drone, and was convinced it was the near side wheel bearing. I changed the hub and driveshaft, and it was same. It looked like the diff must be the culprit, but someone told be about a noisy prop shaft… so I checked that and there was slack that ‘clacked’ when twisted back and forth on the car. Changed REAR prop and it went away. On my sons bmw the worn diff sounded like your noise. It was the diff though.
Try checking the crank pulley as they have a rubber anti vibration damper that can start to fail as did on my Freelander, best way to check is shine a torch down from the top with the engine ticking over ,if you see floating shiny metal debris or shiny debris near the pulley that's your problem as was mine, Good luck
You're well on the way to diagnosing it using the technique I'd use, but I also use a stethoscope as well which i bought from Machine mart year's ago, I'm starting to think it could be the propshaft centre bearing perhaps, use of the Stethoscope can pin point any bearing noises on various components.
You said the VCU was done on it. The problem with the VCU is the liquid in them starts to go solid. I would say it's probably a good idea to get the prop checked. It may even just be s failing center bearing. I don't think the Diff or the IRD is about to go it would be a lot noisier. Best get it checked. 👍
Series 1 Freelanders and facelift Freelanders use a viscous coupling propshaft filled with fluid which thickens up overtime and causes excessive strain on the drivetrain and damages the crown wheel in the gearbox eventually causing catastrophic failure hence all of the 2 wheel drive freelanders on the road.
Tracking those noises to the source can be a real pain in the ears and I really hope you can get it sorted without a crazy expense. Many years ago I noticed a rattle in my Yeti and for the life of me I could not trace it and it was driving me literally bonkers as it kept moving and then one day it stopped completely.... On that particular day I was wearing a different watch, it turned out to be the cheap rattle bracelet on my other watch. It's not surprising the sound was moving about. Thanks for sharing.
Good luck Matt. Given that two owners prior has a garage and the hunter pampered it mechanically, and there are NO gearbox oil leaks, it is unlikely that the gearbox oil level is a problem. Before you get noise, an auto box with low oil level will change gears erratically and sometimes slip changes briefly, particularly when cornering. I think the propshaft could be the culprit. Should be OK for your camping trip if you are not going too far. Enjoy.
Central propshaft bearing £80. You can do it on your drive too.
I had some mystery grinding on a van, turned out to be the inner tyre weights just kissing the caliper. When jacked up you couldn't hear it but under load the tiny amount of play in the bearing meant it touched. It was never a problem with lead based weights but was when when much thicker steel weights were added.
My bet would be the two bearings either side of the VCU. They have a pretty short life span unless the P/O fitted OE or better quality. I know this from experience! Not a hard job to replace.
I have same problem, had it up on the ramps and it is the prop shaft centre bearing on mine at least. Its the next job on list for the freelander
Would be wise to check the transfer box oil as they only hold half a litre of oil or so and the insides are made of chocolate hence there being many a front wheel drive freelander if you can remove the prop and see if the noise dissapears
It's a good time to double check all the barrings time in on your side not the garage 👍🏻😊❤️🇬🇧💂🏼.
Driving down through France in autumn 2021 in our 4x4 Yeti, a whining noise starting getting louder. I thought it was rear nearside, my wife in the passenger seat thought it was rear offside. The Green Flag agent said it was a wheel bearing and it would be fine for at least 1000 km. After another 200 km, the rear differential exploded internally and seized at motorway speeds! After a week in a Fiat 500x, we flew home courtesy of Green Flag and the car followed a fortnight later. I subsequently replaced the differential and Haldex with a low mileage salvage unit and GF made us a compensation payment for their agent’s failings. I tore down the old differential and there was no sign of oil starvation or overheating - it looked like a bearing had failed and led to chain of internal carnage.
I really rate Falken tyres. I put a set of their Euroall Seasons on my Touran to replace the Michelin Cross Climates I used to use until they shot up in price. After 10k I’m delighted with them in all weathers. The CCs used to last 40k on the front and 60k on the rear, so longevity will be the final test for the Falkens.
I did think center carrier bearing for.the prop . My Freelander had a similar noise I took off the prop and carrier made it 2wd fuel economy went up a bit and no grumbling. It was great till the winter of 2009 and I was working in Scotland. Cars getting stuck and people coming to.ask.for.a.tow.. I had to explain it was now 2wd
Possibly propshaft UJ's or centre bearing. Should be reasonably straight forward for a man of your tinkering abilities. Would make a nice video
I’ve been running Falken Wildpeak AT3W All Terrains on my Jeep Renegade for 18 months, they have an excellent reputation for all year round driving and are Snowflake and 3 Peaks Rated for winter driving. They have an excellent reputation in the US Jeep Renegade Owners Groups for those that heavily Off-Road their Jeeps, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed at all, however, they don’t look as cool as BF Goodrich KO2 or General Grabber AT3’s

Sounds a bit like prop shaft carrier bearing. As others have said, a failing UJ would vibrate rayher than grind
As always a great video to watch, never a dull moment Matt.
Take prop shaft off drive it if noise goes either prop carrier bearings they are notorious for going or front bearing in ird unit I would say they are two culperates nice tyre choice all best donny

She is now moaning about engine noise - wish me luck in suggestions of a full engine service.......
rear diff. check for worn gears, change oil. check shaft bearing
Prop centre bearings are a REALLY common failure on the F1
Im having a similar issue on a Vauxhall corsa. Mine is rhythmic though. Like something catching at certain points. Speeds up and slows with speed. No play in the bearings and dosent sound grumbly when it’s spun by hand. Sound like the front left on mine too. Getting it checked at garage, I’m hoping it’s a wheel bearing

@@BrikMT only happens over 30mph. Does it with the clutch depressed and out of gear. I think it’s a bearing, hard to test a bearing when it’s off the ground without a ton of car sat on it if it’s only just going. What on the gearbox would cause that?
Deffinatly the carrier bearings mine was doing the same
Could the noise be worn engine mounts causing vibration/grinding noises? Regarding tyres, a garage once told me that lack of use leads to cracking as the absence of flexing while driving prevented the oils (or whatever they are) from being distributed throughout the tyre. I don't know if that's correct.
maybe you SHOULD use the bini with the tent- for comparisson purposes obviously
Sounded to me like the prop bearing too - the mic picked it up when you held it towards the centre of the car.
Does HubNut know you've borrowed his cords? 😆
I had a manual TD4, the noise will be rear prop had the same, undo it and let it spin up just the fronts, if its the prop the noise will disapear.easy swap but not cheap
That must have cost you at least £400 for those LR tyres. I don't understand why you don't buy recent part worns for half the price for your fleet, as they are all going to perish with around 80% tread due to lack of use.
@tubaman66

The issue with part worn tyres is you never know their history. The same is of course true of any tyres on a secondhand car but I'd still only buy them as a last resort.
I would say centre prop support bearing as a few others have.
Spin the weel and hold a hand on the spring.. then you will feel the bearing thru the springs
Within 15 seconds of clip starting: Carrier Bearing. Up on jack stands with new tyres: CARRIER BEARING. "Seems to be in the center": C.A.R.R.I.E.R. B.E.A.R.I.N.G.!!!!!!!
So the noise doesn't change when turning or with no gears, that'll be the prop bearing then. The fact it did it off the ground with no forces acting on it sort of gives it away. Don't waste your money on ATF fluid, those boxes shift bad or shunt when low on fluid.
Just turn the radio up matt.that cures everything😂.
I am just wondering if it could be the prop shaft support bearing and prop shafts are a pain been there done that
sounds like the carrier bearing
I would have spun the wheels with the engine stopped, I have a suspicion it will be the constant velocity joint on one side, or both. that is why it is a speed related noise. if the boots on the joints lose their internal lubrication, the joint will quickly fail. Cheers

I went totally insane building one of these. I used a Hammond aluminium enclosure with 4x brass bayonet bulb holders fixed on top. Each bulb holder is individually switched and I have a 200w, 100w, 60w, 40w fitted usually. Each can be individually switched in parallel for adjustable limiting. I also have a bypass switch with a neon warning light and shrouded 4mm sockets for meter leads to sample input and output voltages. It all cost about £50! 😂🤣😂 It really is beautiful though. you were nearly there, take it up to 80mph, into neutral, switch engine off, you now have 45secs of run-down to trace the fault. a sensible body in the car helps, saves diving out in a hurry. grab the suspension as near to the hub as safe [!?], "feel" the vibes on rundown. this is how, when i quote for a repair, i'm usually right PS a ratchet strap onto the 75 wouldn't be a bad idea, it does shake a bit...
