I think the adrenaline you 2 were experiencing kept your thinking sharp to make smart decisions. I bet after you reached shore and realized you were safe you started to shake inside with realization how close you came to death. I watched my uncle fall through the ice by the penstalks on that lake when I was 10 years old as we were ice fishing, its something I will never get over. Hang in there Rod, time might never heal you completely but look at it as "someone or something" was looking after you, take some comfort in that....
