Hungary Travels: Where Cavemen lived | Hiking in Szalajka Valley |

The Szalajka Valley is one of the most popular hiking spots during Hungary Travels, and it's not a surprise: Many natural wonders and amazing sights await you as you walk along the Szalajka stream in the valley, visit Lakes that are the homes of the special local trout, plus there is a unique Cave where once Cavemen lived. In this video we'll show you guys the Valley so you can get inspired for a visit! It is a true Natural Treasure of Hungary!
The Szalajka Völgy (Valley) is right next to the town of Szilvásvárad and it is part of the larger Bükki National Park (Bükki Nemzeti Park) that hosts many amazing natural treasures. It can be reached from Budapest by public Transport in 3 hours, or about 2 hours by car. But visiting from nearby Town of Eger may also be a good approach since its less than an hour from there with public transport, or under 30 mins by car.
A local variety of trout (Pisztráng in Hungarian) is the best food choice of the area. Locals have created lakes along the Szalajka stream to breed this unique species of fish and they have been doing so for the past 100 years!
For those of you who enjoy hiking, this is an excellent area that offers so much more, and we plan to visit other places here that show what a great are the Bükk is for nature lovers! If you don't want to miss those videos, make sure to SUBSCRIBE to the channel!

I really love the Bükk National Park, love the forrest, streams, hills, mountains and trails, the wildlife (mainly birds, wild boars, roe and deer (and midges!)) and the quiet. Though not allowed, we camped there in a little tent while hiking. And we were not alone, as in the evenings we saw a lot of other camp fires on the mountain sides. I don't know how zealous the park rangers are today though. Our first hike was in late September which was not the best choice because it's the rutting season of the deer. We found ourselves in the middle of bull fights multiple times. Which was quite scary because these are not little, cute Bambi versions but big deer-bulls with large antlers! And now that I've read about bear sightings in the Bükk, I don't think it's a good idea to go camping in the wild anymore. Instead, there are campgrounds in the centre of the park in Répáshuta and on the Hollóstető mountain that are excellent starting points for hikes in the park. There are also cabins there and there are campings, hotels and cabins on the outskirts of the park as well. Sorry for my long comments, I get a bit enthusiastic when all those memories come up 😃

No worries, keep the long comments coming, it's nice to hear these personal stories and also get some ideas on places to put on our bucketlist, because Bükk is indeed very nice and I would love to go back and explore it even more :)
