Hungarian Uprising, Budapest (1956)

A rise of protests by students and workers waving Hungarian flags with the communist emblem in the centre cut out arose in Budapest, erupting into active fighting in October 1956.

There's a tradition in Hungary that old(er) people don't like Americans, because when the Soviets invaded and Nagy Imre called for help, the CIA came to Hungary and promised the help the fight for freedom. In the last hours and days of the fight the fighter braced themselves one last time because they heard " Nagy Imre said the Americans are coming". Of course they did not come and they felt betrayed.

The US was burnt out on war, WW2 and the Korean war killed all motivation to get into another war, atleast a direct conflict with Russia, considering just a few years later we were in Vietnam. Another reason is the fact that Hungarian uprising most likely never even made the news papers in the US. Im quite the history buff, and this is the first time ive ever heard about this, so the weight of the average 1950's anti commie American probably had no idea anything was even going on in Hungary. Im sorry that they feel betrayed by us, but, The UN isnt just the USA, theres the rest of western Europe to blame for not coming to Hungarys aid as well. Its damned if you do, and damned if you dont for the US. If we stick our nose in someone elses business, were shunned for it, and if we dont come to someones aid, were shunned for not helping.

Matthew Robison You should learn more about this topic before you try to be so smart. Yes, the UN is not just the USA. Spain wanted to help with 100k soldier- the USA stopped that. And for what?! Not because they dont have enough strength... ohh son , USAs vital part is the war. It was then, and it is now. Your shithole disgusting country made a deal(with the “scary” commies). Suez was more important than the hungarians. The UN kept suez for hungary. Your diplomats were telling false facts. No help was sent. Im so sad about that your opinion is the higher average in your country.

It costs a lot of money to be free. Those who have it make the rules and enslave the poor dumb masses by creating corporations these slaves can work at, and if their lucky, they will make enough money to barely get by and make it back to work day after day. The more populated countries become, the cheaper the labor. You are only worth what it costs to replace you. With over 250,000 people born everyday it isn't much unless you are in the top 10 percent. The cost of living keeps going up and the wages stay stagnate, meaning you have to slave away longer and longer just to get by. So the rich who own most everything keep jacking the prices up until the bottom finally falls out. then people lose their homes and businesses and the super rich can scoop in and buy capital at 10 cents on the dollar. With millions of rules, laws, statutes, ordinances and codes. good luck with your freedom. This world doesn't owe you a thing only what you go out and get or can take with your militias. The only people free are the super rich and the dead..People on their knees are easier to control, and people that are oppressed are too busy trying to survive to do anything to change things. Most people are afraid to die , which means the government can do whatever it wants and get away with it. Until people finally snap and the government can send in their hit squads to kill at will. Population control agenda at your service.

Let's just keep in mind that the Suez crisis was at that point too. The CIA radio blamed the Hungarians, Free Europe. Today they deny and claim that it was only a radio action for the employees of the radio, but who looks at things with a little bit more outlook, can see that he was really overtaken by the Russians, while Egypt was alone and eventually the US could decide ... Free Europe literally said to the public: "Keep it! Come on!" If they do not open their jaws, sure half of them go out to shoot and a bunch of people are still alive today. There are old men who remember that they were lurking us while they were encouraged. Franco pl wanted to send troops, they were on the plane when the US said they would not try ....

Detective Lizard Many don't even know that hungary exists let alone hear about this uprising and it's fall. The reason is simple in this story the people can't pick up the flag of western nations and wave it upon the glorious deeds of their intervention because there wasn't any. It would be a shame for the US and all the older UN and NATO members to admit that they only start wars for political gains and not for the opressed nations freedom. So they just quietly pass on this sad event and try to errease it from western history writing so they have one less thing to be accused of. They picked the suez canal conflict over hungarys personal fight against the ussr because i admit it the latter had far less economic value but still its sad.

During the Warsaw uprising hungarian army refuse to attack the polish, rather secretly gave them unregistered weapons ammo, showed them safe passages in and out of the city helping civilian and wounded evacuations. As a Swiss I do salute those brave Hungarian people in a silence of honour for the fallen. This uprising is a well known event here as the Swiss population strongly could identify with the Hungarians struggeling for independence and freedom. It resulted in what some historians describe as the strongest collective anticommunist movement in a country of the west. (,,Switzerland is more western than the West" is often quoted.) It went as far as that ordinary people, of al age and classes spontaneously sieged the houses of all known communists for days with the police and the armed forces, both strongly anticommunist institutions, not really to change the situation. It's something we learn already at a young age, as it is a great example of public identity and solidarity with a never before experienced public readyness to help the people in Hungary as well as the refugees.

What's often forgotten (or deliberately omitted) from this history is that the Hungarian revolution was led by libertarian communists who wanted to take the means of production away from the state and put them under direct worker control. This wasn't a fascist coup (as the soviets claimed) or a capitalist revolt (as the video claims).

  • 6 жыл бұрын

The revolution (properly, the uprising) was not actually led by anyone. But it's true that the government and some resistance groups were libertarian commies. They were shot and hanged first.

Thank you for the video, I really like it. :) Please do also 15th March 1848 Buda and Pest anti-feudalist anti-monarchist revolution too as that is an unique one in history for having victory without any bloodshed

Thank you for making these videos. My students enjoyed watching the Hungarian Uprising and Berlin Wall clips as part of their study of the Cold War. Are there any plans to create one on the Prague Spring?

This is such an important part of the Cold War history. I feel Americanised history doesn’t make this relevant enough. This needs more recognition ❤️

Let me mention here, that my grandmother lived at that time. She would often hear the rumbling noises of tanks, the hundreds of troops marching. And another thing. Budapest was one of the main points were fighting was. In other cities like Debrecen and Szeged, there were gruesome fighting too. For one cause, all cities rose up and together, fought the impossible.(I am a Hungarian if you would ask)
