Hung Gar Kung Fu 洪拳 - Basic and Application 基本及應用

Instagram: houghton.charlene
In this video I’m going to share Hung Gar’s basic moves and how to apply them in fights.
00:36 Hung Kuen basic moves:
(Tiger crawling down the mountain)
(Single tiger catches the lamb)
00:58 Kup Choy 扱搥 (Knuckle whip)
01:05 Pau Choy 拋搥 (Cannon punch)
(Side rocket punch)
01:17 Sau Choy 哨搥 (Swinging punch)
(First star wave punch, Second star wave punch)
01:39 Yat Chee Choy 日字搥 (Sun fist)
01:56 Wu Dip Jeung 蝴蝶掌 (Butterfly palm)
Application:
02:10 1. Mang Fu Har San, Dan Fu Cam Yeung, Yat Chee Choy & Jak San Jin Choy
04:44 2. Tiger claw, Kup Choy, Yat Chee Choy & Jak San Jin Choy
07:09 3. Wu Dip Jeung
08:10 Conclusion:
Whatever martial arts you are learning,
make sure you understand the concept and be able to modify the movement. Adapt for different situations
according to the opponent’s body shape, reaction or movement.
Also, that there is no such thing as the best martial arts style or the most effective strike for fighting.
The most important is the person being able to apply what he/she learnt or practised into a fight, then any martial arts styles or strikes can be effective.

Dear Charlene, thanks for this video, very useful and impressive! That would be useful, if You would translate the names of the Hung Gar moves (like Mang Fu Har San, Dan Fu Cam Yeung, ect...) into english. At 0:05 and at 4:14 You show a block, what is familiar for me from Boxing, Muay Thai and Panantukan, but I've never seen it in any kung fu. Is this from Hung Gar too?

I did Hung Gar Kung Fu for 6 years. I can say it is one of the more difficult and demanding Kung Fu disciplines to reach the black belt. I was 2 belts away from getting mine. But I just felt I needed something different to improve as a fighter because I felt stuck. I switched to boxing, and the combination of the two made me improve so much. My standup improved immensely. Adding boxing to any discipline will make you a lot better of a fighter

dude, totally agree. some kung-fu styles have excellent range of motion and extension, but lack a good defensive stance but when combined with boxing training you can get the best of both. JKD has a major boxing influence that Bruce felt help supplement what Wing Chun seemed to be missing on it's own.

There's such a huge gap between all those other academy videos and these real training ones from actual practicioners. So cool that one can even 'see' the torque from the hip and the tension being released over the arms when demonstrating the moves.

It's mostly because people that practice it never use it in actual fights, so they don't have the experience. Also not everything in traditional kung fu works in modern time. I also watch videos of instructors that also mention a lot of these forms are supposed to be training your muscle memory, and not supposed to be in actual combat.

  • @tommytsunamy7319

    @tommytsunamy7319

@@ibrohiem Yes. That's true, we're taught that our skills are for self defense, and should be used as a last resort because we should always do our best to avoid conflict. I'm a 1st degree blackbelt in Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu and it took me 10 years to get. In my experience sparring, fighting, and doing technique application, I've never come across a technique that didn't have a situational* (key word lol) application. I do say situational because you are indeed right in saying that some techniques aren't applicable today, yet true Kung Fu as an art and as a theory of self defense should be constantly evolving. Though there are plenty of Kung Fu schools that don't spar or even teach technique application so plenty of people could be among those you mean that have never used their martial arts skills in combat.

Charlene, your videos rock! You are exceptionally detail-oriented in explaining every technique to its full completeness and are able to simplify the method without compromising any essence of Hung Gar Kuen. If possible, could you possibly please make a video explaining how to navigate among the 3 positions (2 outside gates and 1 inside gate) "da sam sing" 打三星 partner training drills biu-sau from single bridge-hand A.K.A. single sticky hands? Timing and distance with the inside gate is something that I still have yet to master. In Wing Chun, when others defend their centerline, we end up flanking either of the 2 outside gates. How do you get comfortable being in any of the 3 gates?

The Lama/Lion Roar style is the one that has influenced the long swinging fist techniques found in the style. Wong Fei Hung exchanged techniques with Lama Master Wong Long ( one of the senior Ten Tigers of Guangdong). It barely resembles its original village Hung Gar called Ha Say Fu.

@@F20ization Don't worry i belive it. It's juste un a video it's impossible to see the internal work and others things like that. Personally a practiced lot of Japanese martial arts.... and you can see a lot a lot very very bad exibitions on KZread or, even worst, on official videos.
