I'm on a lifelong quest to watch all 75 Bogart feature films!
I'm 77 & saw this film as a 7 year old in 1953 & loved it! After that, I became a Humphrey Bogart fan & saw every one of his future films, until his untimely death in 1957! The only drawback, I feel, was that because of its beautiful locations, it should have been shot in color! This would have made it more modern to future audiences & stayed more popular!

OMG! Thanks for posting this. I don't think I've seen this before. An Italian comedy starring Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones and Gina Lollobrigida! Screenplay by Huston and Capote! Directed by Huston! Supporting cast inclides Robert Morley and Peter Lorre! The dry humor is perfect for a story like this. Everyone plays their role perfectly straight and the humor comes naturally from the story, characters and dialog. Bogart was 53 years old here and still had a few hit movies to go before his death four years later.
One of those movies which didn't get the respect it deserved. I suppose it doesn't stand up to Key Largo or The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre, but Bogart was great as usual and every little part was done well, especially the purser on the boat. I recommend it to everyone who loves an off-beat caper film; well worth one's time.
Hahaha! LOVE it! Gina gets off the life boat wearing high heels!! Made my night...

One of the first shaggy-dog movies. Love that ramshackle marching tune played by the town band at the beginning and at the end. And that chicken during John Huston's directing credit, which signals us not to take anything seriously.
I can't believe it. I'm such a Bogart fan, and yet I've never heard of this film. Thanks for the upload!!❤️ (And just 5 years before he passed)

It's a very polarizing film. You just simply have to go with and flow and if you try to think about it for more than a minute, you'll hate it.
My father said - many times - that this was the best movie ever filmed. (He said the second best was Laurence Olivier's _Hamlet)_
I like anything John Huston did this is an offbeat movie with excellent actor's 👏👏👏👏👏
Such a wonderful film which I have seen many times, including when it was brand new way back in 1953, when I was a young lad of 17! The stars were all brilliant but I particularly enjoyed the Captain and Jenifer Jones's accent was near perfect. May I strongly recommend this to any movie fans without reservation. England, March, 2024.

I take it they went from filming The African Queen to filming this with just a few cast changes. (I didn't think it was possible for a movie with such a cast, director, and writers would be something I've never heard of in my life.)
Thank you for this movie. I haven't seen this one.
Wonderful movie, you have to watch this!
Either this is just like a Billy Wilder film or a Billy Wilder film is just like this. Brilliant cast. Bogart seems loyal to certain people, Robert Morley was also in The African Queen. The man who plays Pat McCormack in The Treasure of the Sierra Madres was also in other Bogart films. I admire loyalty to good people. This is a great film, thanks to Talking Pictures TV channel for bringing it to my attention.

“In Chile the name of O’Hara is a tip top name, many Germans in Chile have become to be known as O’Hara.” Subtle if you know your history about rat lines you’ll get it. Edward Underdown who has appeared in many B pics my favourite is The Voice of Merrill, really gets a chance to show what he can do here in such illustrious company of Bogart and Lorre and the great Robert Morley. The production includes a couple of Oscar winners and one double Oscar winner. The tone is similar to an Ealing comedy which may be why Hollywood regards it as a flop.

Anything Bogart baby!!!💋
I gave it every chance, but I was not amused. The whole thing was contrived and labored. In spite of a fine writer and director and a stellar cast, this was a stinker. That’s the main reason so few people have heard of it.
At 7 minutes and 20 seconds into this movie... That lady does not know how much truth she has spoken about the Congo experiments... This is absolutely true
Seems like an early version of It's a Mad, Mad World.
To enjoy the witty company of a lovely film is a fading pleasure, but Beat the Devil, The Thin Man, I Married A Witch, still do the trick.
Last Collaboration between Huston and Bogart
The character actors alone would make this a 10, even without Bogey, Jones, Lollobridgida.
I have seen this movie at least 500 times. It is full of cleverly inserted Easter eggs. Many of which are esoteric allegories purposely hidden within. Made Only for those who happen to be keen observers. (wink wink) It was Bogart’s last film. One he always wanted to make but the studios wouldn’t let him. Frustrated, he made it himself, financed with his own money just before he died. It is in my opinion Bogart’s greatest film. Some people may find it terse. Or hard to follow, mostly because it was sound designed, written, directed, and acted out to secretly convey hidden messages. All as esoteric allegory. If you are clever, and a “keen observer”, see how many of them you can find.

Bogart's last film was 'The Harder They Fall', released four years later. Far from loving 'Beat the Devil', Bogart had to be coaxed by Huston into doing it. Bogart did not understand his character and felt the production had been a hot mess. After it flopped at the box office, costing him money as co-producer, he said 'Only a phoney could love it'.
@bobtarmac1828

@HobartBloke Thanks for the info. I read (mis read) somewhere that is was his last film that he had been fighting the studios to do for years, but of course they said no. Not to be deterred, he and John set up their own production company to make the film anyway. I figure the main reason the film flopped with the general audiences at the time might have been because of the ill-timed bells throughout the movie. As a sound person myself, I thought it odd that Houston would allow a hack sound engineer to ruin his film with the bells. Then I realized they were placed there in each scene on purpose. There are many more easter eggs besides the bells. See if you can find the secret of the bells for yourself. :)

It was wonderful to see these great actors/actresses engage in roles they weren't accustomed to. It is funny how the images we transmit from our memory sink these people into pigeonholes which transfer into an illusion that allows for our judgement for them to be in miscast roles? All in all, this was a terrific movie to enjoy, and to those that departed far too soon from the film industry, my prayer is that they have served us well, and may they REST IN PEACE. THANK YOU TO THE DISTRIBUTORS FOR THEIR EFFORTS TO PLEASE A WORLD AUDIENCE!!!
In the original novel Billy is English, Maria Hungarian and the main setting a port in the South of France, not Italy. Ross and Harry Chelm are killed during the story and the team is incarcerated in Spain, not North Africa. Van Meer is murdered in Brussels and the case is probed by a Belgian detective, not Scotland Yard. However the screenplay is true to the book in spirit and most details. Much of the witty dialogue is a verbatim transcription; the novelist's son, the journalist Alexander Cockburn, said that 'James Helvick' wrote a screenplay with Huston which was altered only in the denouement bc the backers wanted a funnier ending. Truman Capote only contributed to this passage.
Its anti-capitalist propaganda but it is amusing. Bogie in a smoking jacket, the beautiful Gina, Robert Morely furiously drumming his fingers on a table, and, of course, Peter Lorre. Theres a great opening scene w/the arrested comic villains. I posted a still picture of it in my old philosophy dept, labeling it, "Our Philosophy Faculty." It was quickly removed. The Devil doesnt like to be beaten.
