Humor at work | Andrew Tarvin | TEDxOhioStateUniversity

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In this talk Andrew Tarvin talks about how he brought humor to the workplace while he worked at Procter & Gamble. After being complimented by co-workers on how humor helped them enjoy their work, Andrew decided to start becoming a humor engineer--using humor to help people become more efficient and effective in the workplace.
For a final project presentation while working at Procter & Gamble, Andrew Tarvin made presentation slides using Microsoft Paint to bring humor to his PowerPoint presentations. Since then, he has used the skills he learned as an engineer (and his funny personality) to show people how to use humor in the workplace.
Andrew Tarvin is an award-winning speaker, best-selling author, and international comedian. He's worked with more than 100 organizations including Procter & Gamble, GE, and Western & Southern Life Insurance on topics including humor in the workplace, communicating confidently, leadership through change, and strategic disengagement. He is also the author of the best-selling book 501 Ways to Use Humor at Work.
Andrew graduated with a degree in Computer Science & Engineering from The Ohio State University, where he was also a co-founder of the 8th Floor Improv Comedy Group.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Back in1974 I did a stint as a high school teacher. Nearly everyday I used humor to motivate my students. It was by far the most powerful motivator ever deployed. I faced scathing criticism from my fellow teachers and the school principal. Needless to add all my ardent critics were absolutely gobsmacked when the results of the external exams came out and out of 117 students across 3 different classes only 1 failed and 86 passed with distinction. This was the best results the school had attained.

My Aerospace Engineering company is so dry it's really a drain. I use humor all the time and there is a significant percentage of the time it's unwelcome. Not because I use inappropriate humor, but because they are SO SERIOUS that they infer that I am not serious enough to handle projects efficiently. This is regardless of my impeccable record of project completion. We have training modules all the time for various reasons. This talk should be a mandatory training item. Wouldn't that be great. One last thing... to all you SQUARES out there... LiGHTEN uP !! Life is supposed to be fun!

A brilliant presentation Mr. Tarvin. Thank you. Learning how to use humor is so important. In show business we have a term..."he's always on..." To be "on" may be good for the person who is "on" but not necessarily for the listener, in fact may be disapproved of to the point of counterattack. Humor, must be tempered, if you will, to the audience, the circumstances or both, to be effective. Another consideration you underline that I like is that humor is different than comedy. Wonderful. One is immediate, the other is theater. Thanks for the opportunity to comment, the fun and the smiles woven into the fabric of your presentation.

I want my coworkers to feel that way about me. Makes me want to take a few risks and give humor a shot. Improved health, physical, emotional, and financial, are worth the risk. Thanks, Drew.

I can see the general idea behind this talk, but the truth is there is a big line, not a fine line, between executives using humor at work and lower class workers, who are struggling to meet their deadlines and all other requirements from their management...really, I think in most fields, where work is really demanding there is no time for humor. And don't even get me started on the colective idea: even if there is one person who uses humor, the other department colleagues might not be that approving of thei humourus colleague. So this is highly debatable. Maybe when you reach an executive position you can control things better, and so you can inflict the values you think are best of each situation.

What started out as a hobby, worked out to be something that brought lasting changes to my life. As a single mom I didn't have a lot to do when I wasn't cooking, cleaning the house or taking my son to school. I stumbled across binary options when I was looking for something to do that would give me extra money. I suffered losses due to scammers pretending to be legit brokers. I was about to quit when I stumbled upon a post from someone about Mr. Jason McQueen, I had mixed feelings about it but still I decided to give him a try. He helped me resolve all my problems within an interval of 10 days. here's his Instagram page if there is anyone here with any problem write him up (@Jason_real.fx) OR WhatsApp: +1(601) 227-3847

It wouldn't hurt to pick up a book about it if you're trying interested in making jokes that make more than just you laugh. (Personally, I think as long as I'm tickled, is a good joke and others can bask in or be jealous of my joy.) To get you started : -Learning to Be Funny by Mitch Earlywine -the Comic Toolbox : How to Be Funny Even If You're Not by John Vorhaus -the Big Book of New American Humor I also heard a comedian give their insight once. I've forgotten all their advise except for 3 bits: -Exaggerate ONLY 1 part of the truth. For example, if I want to joke about my height, instead of saying, "I'm so short is not funny," I would say, "I'm so short, I could milk a cow standing up." -The Element of Surprise. The thing one expects to hear least catches people off guard and tends to be funny. For example, drawing your power point presentation in Paint when it's expected to have a very serious tone. -Repetition. Refer back to a joke or pun you made before. It gets funnier the 2nd and 3rd time. It gets to a point where is not funny anymore, but often, if you push thru the unfunny phase sparingly enough, it becomes funny again. I hope this helps.
