Hummingbird Hawk Moth

Thousands of white-lined Sphinx Hummingbird Hawk Moths have invaded Chicago Botanic Garden. Sept 1, 2013.
Please subscribe to my channel ‪@GeorgeLeClaire‬ Usually in U.S. in small numbers but is abundant in Mediterranean countries, Central Asia and Japan. Not to be confused with the Hummingbird Moth, which is green, or a hummingbird - this is an insect.

my dad had these things all over his yard one day and says to me , hey look at all the hummingbirds. i thought they were cool but i was able to get really close to them and they wouldnt react like birds do. after seeing the bug like features on them i told my dad they were insects not birds. well of course my dad could never be wrong ever so he yelled at me that they were birds and not to touch them. i went to the library (this was 1994) and after hours of looking through bird books i found them, of course in a bug book. i took the book to him and said hey look dad they are called hawk moth humingbirds, an insect. HA... beause it had hummingbird in the name he grabbed the book from me and threw it down and said "SEE ITS A HUMMINGBIRD". he just had to be right ......baa

HummingBIRDS don't have antenna. First of these Hawk moths I ever saw was a little clearwing. I saw a big Whitelined Shinx the other day. That family has more branches than the Addams family !. I was shocked some eat tomato plants, some eat tobacco plants and some can switch food plants which is something most caterpillars cant do. Amazing family.

I have Mottephobia and there is an invasion of moths where I live. I’m always on edge and terrified. I remember these months from a sleep away camp that I used to go to and how they would sit on my hands. They’re so beautiful and they really calm me down and remind me that moths are harmless. Thank you months. ☺️

I have euonymus bushes along my driveway here in south Texas (Houston area) and in the fall they flower and really put off a sweet smell. Several years ago I was looking at it and saw these hummingbird moths which at first I thought were miniature humming birds but upon closer examination I realized they were insects. I have never seen anything like this before but in the fall there they are with the honeybees loading up on the nectar from my flowering euonymus bushes.

One time while walking my dog at 6:00pm before dinner, we went to a spot with a few white flowers. I was with my friends who were helping hide a fallen nest with two small birds when a Hummingbird Hawkmoth flew in and hovered over the daisies. I never knew Hummingbird hawkmoths live in my country (Philippines) and I was amazed by how still they can keep themselves in the air. I called to my friends to look at it but shortly after it flew off afterward. I have a few fair share of moth encounters from Sphinx Moths, to normal brown Moths, to Atlas Moths, but this encounter was incredible.

I just seen one of these. It was creepy. Right before dark at a honeysuckle bush.

Adorable! I love moths in general, and these in particular. I wish I could see some myself but I don't think there are any in eastern Canada...
