I have been trying to chase down this issue with my H3. I've done everything from new brake caliper, brake hoses, hub bearings and even replaced the right front transaxle, because it felt like the right wheel was locking up while making sharp slow turns. Not one mechanic I talked to ever mentioned the shift fork issue with H3's......dammit. Now I know the right direction to go. I love the vehicle and don't want to trade it off. Thank you for this.

I'm glad the video was helpful! The (relatively) easy way to test to see if this would be the cause of your symptoms would be to drop the front driveshaft, and go for a test drive. I'd bet good money that the symptoms disappear.

I believe I have the same issue with my H3. Makes clicking noise when I step on gas while moving forward or backward. I've taken my to Firestone and they told me my engine mounts are broken and thats what's causing the noise and should take it to dealer asap. I told them they are morons because if my mounts were broken, my whole car would be shaking..(I have this on paper)... I did take it to Chevy dealer and they said my mounts are fine but both of my front axles will need to be replaced at $1806.15 for the service with labor. I did do that and car still makes the same noise when I drive. So I feel like I wasted my money! Not one mechanic ever mentioned the shift fork issue with H3's! We need more mechanics like you out there......Wish you were in Florida, I would get my car to you!!! Now I know the way to go. I love the vehicle the same as I did when I first sat in it in 2007 when it was brand new. I'm hoping for it to stay in my family for many many more years...... Thank you for this.

8:22 I don't think it is the planetary gear for low-range. It should be the spur-gear central differential (planetary gear differential), and the shift fork is used to locked the front and rear axle together, (4-High Lock).

Hi, my husband and I are dealing with our hummer. We have an issue similar to the binding when we turn but some mechanic told us that a 4x4 supposed to bind when you turn. On our way to an appointment today, we were doing 70 in the interstate and heard a loud snap noise and then the truck started really bad as if the axels had broke. So I drove it 30mph home and took it to the same mechanic who gave me the same bs that 4x4's are supposed to bind when you turn. Now he is saying it's my transfer case. So that's how I found your video. Can you or anyone else in this tread help us save a lot of money and time by possibly troubleshooting this problem. When the mechanic and I test drove the truck, so I can point out the shaking problem, he told me to stop and we both got under the truck and he shook the transfer case with his hand and said that we need a new transfer case which seems it's going to cost over a $1000 bucks. I did see him move the transfer case back and forth or whatever that was in the middle under the truck and I also saw a lot of transmission fluid under the truck. Please let me know!

How much oil did you put in it? I just took mine apart today but the shift fork is coming in tomorrow. I took my time to clean it up really good my filter screen looks pretty good the magnet had a bit of gunk but nothing that wasnt normal wear so im pretty much going to leave it alone just replace the fork.

The Hummer H3 is full time 4wd...how do you propose to disengage the 4wd ? Does this fork switch from 4wd High to 4wd Low ? I have the exact same problem.. just got my new Metal Fork today and I will be replacing it as soon as it stops raining here in Central Oregon... sometime in June or July !

I'm not a ton of help on that one. If it doesn't feel like it is binding and popping when you turn corners, I would look more at the transmission and rear end than I wold at the transfer case. If you suspect that it may be the shift fork that is always locked in, jack up the front axle and try to turn a tire. If it moves freely then the front axle is disengaged, if it doesn't then it could, indeed be the shift fork issue we experienced.

The banging could be a lot of things but the common failures to check on an h3 are: -Front diff mount bushings (one in rear of differential and two at each cv axle output) -front driveshaft joint going from tcase to front diff -worn or broken front diff -excess play (stretched) chain in tcase. To find out what problem was on my hummer, i placed my phone under the truck with video camera recording the undercarriage and shifted from forward to reverse and then watched the video to see what was moving/banging when i shifted. In my case it was the rear diff mount bushing, and there was excess play in front diff.
