HUMBLE Sideman in America’s #1 Band Became The ShowStopper on This 70s Classic | Professor of Rock

Ойын-сауық

It should’ve been the zenith of his career… On a fateful night backstage in Knoxville, Tennessee in the summer of ’77… Instead…it was a coup de grace that led to his exit from the supergroup he helped create. Randy Meisner of the Eagles was allegedly too sick to sing his encore spotlight classic rock hit Take it To The Limit with its legendary high note finale. He and Glenn Frey got into a shouting match backstage on the Hotel California tour that night and it got really ugly when Randy punched Glenn in the face. Police tried to break it up but Don Henley called them off. The story behind the song that was the crowning achievement for one of the most beautiful voices of the 70s, and the infamous incident that centered around one of the most recognizable songs in Classic Rock history that sealed this artist’s fate as a member of one of America’s greatest bands… and a tribute to the late country-rock pioneer who’s high harmony helped bring so much depth to Eagles classics like Take It Easy and Witchy Woman is next on Professor of Rock

So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But for whatever reason, be it radio play, lack of marketing, label support, or just sheer stupidity, the song came up short. On previous episodes, we have covered Sara by Fleetwood, Reelin In the Year by Steely Dan, and Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty. Today it’s a band who has had their share of #1 hits but this is one that is a no-brainer and one of their most beloved songs… it comes from the amazing Eagles… again One of the most successful bands of the Rock Era, was also one of the most tumultuous.
During the group’s rise to international superstardom, the clashes between the band members were legendary, especially between the four co-founders of the group: Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner. Leadon couldn’t stomach the constant friction and hated the musical evolution of the band away from its country-rock roots.
His discontent came to a head in 75 during one of those notorious backstage blowouts when he got into a heated argument with Frey and poured a bottle of beer over Glenn’s head. Bernie thought a few months' hiatus from the Eagles would smooth things over, but the rest of the band vetoed, and Leadon was gone shortly after the dousing. Two years later, tired from non-stop touring and nonstop fighting, Randy Meisner, snapped and had his infamous altercation with Glenn Frey that led to HIS departure from the Eagles at the end of the Hotel California Tour.

Back in the 70s my mother played the 45 of "Take It to the Limit" over and over again. I'm not sure I ever saw her love a song so much! I worked at the Sheraton Universal while Randy Meissner did a long-term stay. He would get bored and come down to chat with front desk staff, primarily me. He was so sweet. He told me that he would have been happy in a moderately successful band. He really loved being a studio musician. Hotel California launched the Eagles into the stratosphere. He was suddenly in a very hot band and the stress made him snap. He was shy. He was private. He wasn't really built for the cameras, the constant interviews and the pressure. As the Eagles became more and more successful, the stress ended his marriage and wrecked his spirit. My favorite of his songs was "Try and Love Again." His marriage was over and he was afraid to look for someone else. I really liked him. He acted like a big brother. All of Eagles came to visit him, but he warned me not to accept a date from Don Henley. He said Don was trouble.😊

Thanks - that's a cool story. It's easy for us fans to forget how human our music heroes are. They're just like us and the people we know, for better or for worse. It sounds like he was generally the nice guy in the Eagles, but he never knew he was bipolar in those days, so he had to be unpredictable. Punching a bandmate is a possible sign of a manic episode. So is indulging all night. But it sounds like the nice guy was who he really was - his genuine self. I'm glad he eventually got his diagnosis with enough time to enjoy a few years without that hanging over him. And I'm glad you got to know him when he was his true, gentle self. What a gift! If you're interested, I've got experience with another bipolar musician (no one famous, though he deserved to be - an extraordinary songwriter and musician). He was a former bandmate. He jumped off the stage and beat the crap out of a guy at a small bar gig. He was a really gentle person and a good friend. It was shocking and incredibly out of character for him. He spent the night cooling off in jail, and over the next few days he told each of us (by phone) he had a gun and he was going to kill us, including my wife. Obviously the band was done, and I never saw him after that. He was never diagnosed, but he wrote in his songs about his pattern of getting a good thing going then messing it up. I didn't connect the dots until a few years later when I bumped into his close friend, and he told me how awful the guy felt about what he'd done, and that he'd done things like that many times before and didn't know why. Five years later he took his own life, never knowing it was (in my opinion) a simple illness with a simple treatment. I really miss him. He was a good friend and an extraordinary artist.

I talked about only his good side. A room service waiter came back from delivering food to Randy. He looked astonished. He told me Randy offered him a tip OR his choice of drug. The long dresser was covered in drugs that were neatly categorized and in their own section. A doorman told me Randy was driving his car in the parking structure - backwards. It was 2am. He went up and down every level over and over again. Doormen were freaked out because there were some extremely expensive cars in the valet parking. He never hit a car. But he was good and generous to employees there. Everyone loved him.

@@lylecampbell9036 everyone can be fired. Royalties were from 2 items released in the late nineties. Felder is nothing without the Eagles. He probably lost more money by suing then by touring. He also failed to understand that rock groups aren’t democracies they are usually run by one or in this case 2 members who contribute most of the songs. The Eagles were established by Henley and Frey. Felder shouldn’t have been a corporate member either. Drugs and alcohol brought the band down in the 70’s.

And when they came back on stage for the encore, they did Take it Easy. When Randy hit the unbelievable notes at the end of Take it to the Limit, the crowd in the Civic Center came unglued. Nice tribute, Prof! Thanks. I knew Randy very well in HS, and played keys for several years in Randy's first band, the Drivin' Dynamics out of Scottsbluff, NE. We toured a 4-State area with a really good following, in part due to our ads on 50,000 watt KOMA out of Oklahoma City. Kids all over the Midwest with no access to R&R music on the radio, tuned in to A.M. 1520 when it got dark and the signal spread out. Randy was very funny, always joking around, and a real showman on stage. Great memories. It is true Randy was humble, a typical friendly farm kid, and very talented, indeed. So sorry to know of his passing. RIP.

As far as a tribute to Randy in Scottsbluff, there used to be a display on the wall of the local restaurant (Chili's), and Randy is buried in the family plot in the Gering cemetery. I visited the grave a few months ago and it appears that someone stole the metal plate embedded in the ground. As far as a real tribute, there is an amazing, very complete website called Randy Meisner, A Retrospective that you can Google. Complete history of his life, including a ton on the Dynamics. I live in western Nebraska and often sing karaoke in bars in Scottsbluff and in Mitchell were Randy owned a house. Unfortunately, I never met him as he did not spend a lot of time there in the last decade. Despite this, Randy's connection to his birthplace was never in doubt. Many of the iconic images of the Eagles feature Randy wearing his Frank Implement T-shirt. This yellow shirt with a green John Deere logo was from a hometown business. He certainly had the means to dress fancier, but that just wasn't Randy. A simple soul with an amazing voice.

I spent about 20 minutes talking to Randy in Dallas back in December of 1993. He didn't talk about The Eagles & I didn't ask..hah..Well, he did tell me about leaving Poco. However, I'm not sure now, how all of this matches up.I'm hearing that he quit Poco??..I'll tell, the best I remember, hearing it from Randy. If I remember correctly,..., One day in the studio, Poco was recording.Through the glass window where the sound engineer sits, he saw Jim Messina & the sound engineer talking, Randy coundn't hear them behind the glass, of course. But he got the impression that thier discussion was about him. Within a week or so after that, he got notice that he was out of the band. Randy told me that he went on for years & years thinking that Messina had him kicked out, especially after that particular conversation in the studio. But then, more recently, long after The Eagles, he had met up with Messina. and that,Messina told him that, it wasn't his idea at all. Instead, it was the managers decision. BTW, I had not asked him about Poco, either. He just started talking about it..hah.Randy seemed to feel relieved to find out that, he had been wrong all along about Messina. I don't know what really happened. Randy was defnitely very humble & nice.

Thanks so much for your wonderful tribute to the incomparable Randy Meisner, who was by far my favorite member of The Eagles. There was something other worldly and ethereal about his voice that brought you to a place that few others could when you heard him sing. I was fortunate enough to see him perform with The Eagles in the 70s and his voice as he sang that signature song sent you soaring. When he left The Eagles, I was sad enough to note it in my diary, and I always felt that a lot of the heart and soul left the band after he did. When I heard about Randy's troubles over the years, it was very disheartening, especially the tragic situation regarding the death of his wife. His recent passing makes me very sad, but at least he is at peace now. Although he did not seek the limelight as much as some others might, he just wanted to play good music, I hope he left this world with the knowledge that he did make a difference in this world and many of us are thankful that he did. 20:51

But I have a sister 10 years older than me, another 20 years older, and my mother was 40 years older. I was lucky to have all of their music in our house all the time. Records were always playing. And my sister (the oldest, 20 years older than me) loved Eagles. Take It to the Limit was one her favorites, and it was one of those that broke my sensitive child heart. I still cry when I hear it. I’ve recently revisited Eagles and now they are one of my favorites. I love them, but I hate losing these legends, because I know we will never hear this kind of artistry in music again. My biggest wish now is to see those who remain in their farewell tour. Thank you again, Adam. You paid beautiful tribute to a wonderful artist and song in a way only you could.

He passed in December 2021 and my sisters spread his ashes over the part of the Sonoran desert that he roamed as a kid playing Take It To The Limit as his ashes spread in the breeze. Whenever I am having a bad day or I miss him something fierce, an Eagles song will play on the radio or on my playlist and it brings me comfort every time. Oh wow - Randy Meisner was NOT a “backup singer” …! He began his singing and bass-playing career at age 15, and had several singles released while he was still a teenager - with The Drivin Dynamics, and with The Poor. He also sang lead on several Poco tracks before he left Poco - and the remaining Poco band members replaced his lead vocals yet kept his backing vocals. In Rick Nelson’s Stone Canyon Band Randy WAS a backing singer - and in a clip of the track It Ain’t Easy we see Randy’s voice eclipsing Rick Nelson’s! In Eagles, Randy was one of the four 1971 co-founders - he and Bernie Leadon were the co-founders who brought the experience and expertise to the table, whereas Frey and Henley were relative rookies. In early videos we see all four co-founders sharing the limelight, but eventually giving way to “The Glenn and Don Show”, as Bernie put it in an interview. Randy became accustomed to standing in the shadows, almost as a session musician, because of the power plays by the Egoes - yet, Randy said in an interview after he quit Eagles that he wanted to sing lead MORE, not less. Randy composed and sang lead on a number of Eagles songs, including Midnight Flyer, Early Bird, Certain Kind of Fool, Tryin’ (a forerunner to Take It To The Limit, if you listen to the words, - and check out Randy’s swagger in this one!), Gotta Get Away, Try And Love Again. As a solo artist he wrote and sang other great songs too - such as One More Song, and made an uncharacteristic growling-howling rendition of Too Many Hands (co-written with Don Felder).

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 thank you. I came looking for your comment the minute he said TITTL was his only lead vocal. Midnight Flyer is my favourite Eagles song after TITTL 77 and Last Resort.

Randy sounds so very ADHD in his behavior, very creative, struggles to finish things, impulsive to leave things unfinished and explosive with emotion dysregulation. Probably many musicians fall into this category. Love his voice!!

I'll argue that🤔 Randy Meisner was a musical genuis🎶 Glen Frey & Don Henley RUINED that band🙄😒 Look at how they sue EVERYBODY for COVER SONGS these days🙄😒 They are the equivalent of Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley of KISS🙄😒 Songs after Meisner's departure are weak. 🎶when we're huuuungry; love will keep us aliiiive🎶 Such a WEAK song🙄😒 I always mockingly sing that like a wimp ON PURPOSE...just before changing the radio. I'm with the "boycott" because Henley is such an unprofessional "bitch"🤔 But I am NOT a bandwagoner.

Randy Meisner grew up in Scottsbluff Nebraska, our hometown. He would come back and visit on occasion. His wife had a small gift store in town for awhile. We enjoyed the Eagles music when Randy was in the band.

The heart of a bluesman is represented in this song. Bassists tend to be laid-back supportive souls. God bless the lonely troubled soul of Mr Meisner. Peace brother..

One of my Meisner favs, is a song from the "Desperado" album called, "A Certain Kind of Fool". With "Desperado" being a semi-concept album about American Wild West folklore, there are parallels between being a gun fighter and a guitar slinger in that song. I'd highly recommend anyone who is not familiar, to give it a listen. Such a GREAT tune! :)

I took my mom to an Eagles show at the Forum in LA once. She got to meet Don Henley after the show and it was one of the great "nights to remember." When she passed at 90 in 2016, I found among her things the little black evening bag she had carried that night - with the ticket stub still inside. So grateful to have been gifted with the love of music by Mom and her mother. Eagles were Mom's favorite. If Dad tried to talk while she was listening and singing along with her lovely voice - boy, look out! NOTHING anyone has to say is more important than feeling the goosebumps from Take It To the Limit - one more time. RIP Randy. 🙏🏻

Thank you Adam - for your truly heart felt and in depth tribute to Randy Meisner. Always loved his (On The Border album) contribution "Is It True?" Thankfully, musicians leave behind their work for fans to listen to, remember and carry with us on our own journeys. We are fortunate to know Eagles music and especially Randy.

My first memory of the Eagles was Take It To The Limit. The second was Witchy Woman. I was hooked when I was just a grad schooler. The Eagles were my first favorite band. I was fortunate to see them in their farewell concert. I was mesmerized. They are one of the greatest classic bands of all time . And each of the band members voices were so unique. I think that is what really made them so special.
