Humans and wild apes share common sign language, study finds - BBC News

Humans share common sign language with wild apes, a study has found.
The research revealed that humans are capable of understanding many of the gestures wild chimps and bonobos use to communicate with one another.
The video-based study was carried out by researchers at St Andrews University in Scotland, with volunteers translating ape gestures.
It suggests the last common ancestor humans shared with chimps used similar gestures, and that these may have been a "starting point" for language.

This is absolutely true. I had a chimp communicate with me just the other day when I was visiting the zoo. A chimp clearly told me he was not happy with me for refusing to share the banana I was eating with him by ... giving me the finger.

Yes that's true we as humans know what dogs are telling us sometimes. I'm surprised the BBC showed this story because they are very sensitive about comparing humans with other apes and all the associated patriarchal dominance and subspecies behavioural differences that are associated with that.

Fish signal to each other, even across species. I suppose that this has done little more for me than to indicate that it seems to take an inordinately long time for the scientific community to make what, from many perspectives, are little more than common sense observations. In this sense alone your questioning of the editorial decisions behind the piece seems justified.@@sebastianguerre6868

@@1TimBaugh no your not understanding, these fish do not have sign language it's instinct, they don't learn it, its just in there DNA, only us and great apes have similar sign language, yes other animals have it but nothing like ours and apes, as only us and apes have a ball joint in our shoulder, that allows us to move our arms in nearly any direction, while nearly all other animals have very limited movement

many animals communicate in some form or fashion. my wolfdog would sit in front of the fridge when he wanted his meat treats, take my running shoes in his mouth to the exit gates when he wanted me to take him running and even open my doors with his paws to check on me to see what i was doing. even my ginger cat before him would jump in the car as soon as the door opened when he wanted to go for a drive and butter me up with purrs or rubs when he wanted to sleep next to me. Both lived longer than expected and passed away - i just wish at the end of my journey somehow i'll be with them again

I agree, the claim of the title of the video is totally different from what is addressed in the video. Being able to interpret a monkey species' gestures doesn't mean that we "share" the same language. It merely tells us that we humans are able to guess the meaning of a particular gesture based on external clues. Communication system and language don't mean the same in linguistics in the strictest definitions, but in everyday language they usually do. So,no wonder people don't understand the difference.

dogs just sit and wait next to something they want, they have no sign language at all, they didn't show enough on the news clip but chimps have complex sign language that nearly no other animal has, as most animals don't have arms that can move like us and other great apes, we have a ball joint in our shoulders along with only other great apes

  • @watsonwrote

I explained this in another comment, but there is more compelling evidence in the study that suggests we're not just interpreting general animal behavior: In the study, they noted that there are gestures chimps and bonobos use that have one meaning, and some that have multiple meanings. People who watched the videos were much more confident about their answers for the gestures that had one meaning vs the ones with multiple meanings. They were also able to normally guess the secondary meanings for a few of the multiple-meaning gestures. Since the study participants had no idea which gestures only had one meaning, this suggests there's a vestigial remnant of this innate gesture system in adult humans. Pre-verbal human toddlers use many of the same gestures that chimps and bonobos use, so it is still beneficial for us to understand so we can communicate with our babies, I suppose. Humans and chimps are each other's closest living relatives so it would make sense for us to have more understanding in common than we would with other animals, and even other apes.

Defining terms, including elements of time and context, and engagement between listener and speaker improve potential understanding for all of us. Did anyone happen to interpret, "Protect life on the planet! Super villains are trading living ecosystems for Mardi Gras beads." World wide wisdom there. We should listen more.

*THIS Is How You Balance Your Emotions* We can balance our emotions with the help of the environment. What I mean by “environment” is our society and its influences, that we can surround ourselves with such influences that will guide us on how to direct the emotions that awaken in us. For instance, we know the example of peer pressure, when our friends tell us to do or not to do something, and their influence makes us follow their recommendations. Using this force of our surrounding environment, we can choose our environment-the kinds of people, media and values we surround ourselves with-and accordingly change our attitude toward certain emotions. We can then build our intellect with our social influences. Our desires constantly grow, and we correspondingly need to build a greater and greater intellect with which we can deal with our growing desires. Adjusting our environmental influences in order to build the intellect so that we can best deal with our growing desires is the essence of education. It is what we need to teach the younger generation, that we can balance our emotions with our intellects, and by doing so, come to see our perfect state in life. We should thus try to find an environment that would be able to supplement our constantly-surfacing emotions in a certain direction. Our environment should act as a damper, helping us mediate our inner excitements and eruptions, bringing them to a state where we would be able to realize them-but to realize them in ways that benefit both ourselves and others. In other words, we need to examine ourselves in relation to our environment, whether the environment accepts what we want to do. If we find that our desires match those of the environment, then we can continue realizing our desires. We can then determine that we can carry out what we want to do, that it will benefit both us and those around us, and that everything will turn out just fine if we go ahead and realize our desires. This is how we can balance our emotions-by learning how to balance between our intellect and our emotions via our surrounding environment.

We did not evolve from a modern, living ape, like a chimpanzee. We evolved and descended from the common ancestor of apes, which lived and died in the distant past. This means that we are related to other apes and that we are apes ourselves.

Please broadcast jallian wallabagh scenes in the film Sardhar udhdham in all your world channels. Then only people will know how bad BRITISH treated Indians before and how they are repeating the same in modern ways. Be honest and tell the truth. Don't take sides for money. If you are honest you should broadcast all the injustices done by Britishers to not only Indians but also all mankind in this World. BBC be honest. God will punish everybody for their misdeeds.

@@colinrobinson4233 Wouldn't go as far as to say obviously not real. But there is no logical reason to believe that a god exists, until we have hard evidence for it. Unfortunately, proving a negative is impossible, so we will never be able to assert with certainty that there is no god. An agnostic atheistic view is the most logical stance on the matter. That being said, I prefer gnostic atheists over gnostic theists by far. And people like the OP clearly lack education, to deny evolution is absolutely ridiculous in face of all the evidence we have for it.

@@colinrobinson4233 Let me elaborate; if you know the exact conditions of a system, you can prove a negative. But because you can't know the exact conditions of the universe (Edit; removed the part with maxwells demon, as it was unnecessary to the argument and would only cause confusion in the way I used it), a claim like "there is no god" can't be proven. That aside, as soon as someone arguing for the existence of god answers with; there is a god who created the universe, but he doesn't interfere with his creation, then his proposed god would be theoretically a non-local, hidden variable, which you can't disprove (or prove for that matter).
