Humanoid - An Abandoned Game
Humanoid is probably the largest abandoned project of mine. It was a retro-style adventure game, but it was eventually scrapped when I started moving on to other projects. So this video aims to at least document this otherwise unknown project.
Q: "Can I download or play this game?"
A: It's not a finished game, and a lot of scenes from the video had to be hacked to access different rooms or events. It's not in a 'demo-able' state, and I don't have the time yet to get it there. I may open source the engine at some point, but I don't know if it's really that useful with no support or documentation, and I would not recommend anyone to use it anyway (that's already a hard lesson learned for me).
Q: Hyperbolica?
A: Yes. Still working on it, and I still don't have an expected release date yet. It will be ready when it's done.

However, the odds of that very specific chain of events happening, and the public finding out about it, are so unbelievably small that it will likely never happen. it feels so weird looking at this kind of abandoned projects. I am not talking about demos, i have dozens of those. I am talking about projects that look so polished and finished like humanoid. It makes me kinda sad seeing projects like this
Humanoid looks pretty impressive considering you made it all yourself, congrats : )
The glow-in-the-dark stars on the robot's wall was a great touch.
Bouncing back from that theft is inspiring to this developer who also had many hours/years of work stolen in a break-in years ago. Great work all around, can't wait for every new update on Hyperbolica.
And the CodeParade lore expands once more...
Had my car broken into and had my backpack stolen. I put so many sentimental items in it because I was making a trip back from my childhood home like my first DS, some photos, and a jar a apple butter that a family friend had made. Very good lesson to hide your things (even in your own car) or to keep it on you. Also, don't put all your sentimental eggs in one basket.
I think it looks like a pretty cool game, and you made a LOT more progress than I would have if I'd done this, so kudos for even going that far. I completely understand about art being a time suck though. When I hear stories like Cave Story or Stardew Valley where it was just one person slaving away for who knows how long my first thought is always "at which point did they know all this work would pay off?"
@horrorhotel1999

Pretty sure the only way you end up going trough with projects like that is by enjoying the process and doing it for the hell of it. If profit/payoff is your main motivator you probably go about things way differently

Humanoid does look pretty interesting actually, coming from a huge Cave Story fan
Now, we'll have to wait for the guy that decides to steal and finish it.
for every success story there are 10000 forgotten and untold failures. it's nice to see someone show the grit and work that goes into projects that don't come to fruition.
This is something I need to grapple with. My brain tells me I need to be as talented and successful as a solo dev otherwise I have failed. I've been a hobbyist for years and I'm still barely able to cobble stuff together in unity. I know it's a problem but I'm not sure how to break out of this mindset
@connordarvall8482

I don't know if this will work for you, but what I do is repeatedly ask myself "Why do I make games?" For me, the answer is almost always "Because I want to." That breaks me out of any expectations Ive given myself as I accept that what I'm doing isn't rational, probably won't be seen by more than 20 people and most certainly does not provide any economic benefit to me whatsoever. Also, remember that any projects you complete always look worse to yourself than they would to others.

Make the games you want to make, making a game is an achievement within itself. But if you do want to "as talented" as solo dev the one thing i recommend you do is to create a new mechanic to build a new game on or find new ways to use old mechanics in said new game.
I read "abandoned game" before "Humanoid" and was horrified. Thought it was Hyperbolica.

This man is such a chad he made his wife a game
proposing with a game is the nerdiest and the coolest way i've ever heard of
Love your old mascot. Sad ending that the game had! It will be remembered
I feel that pixel art bit- a lot of my most recent work has dropped art entirely due to how much I hate making it. Even when making games that need art, I've found it much more enjoyable as a programmer and a designer to white box everything first, and only then look for an artist to help once I've determined if I like the direction of the project.
Need to use source control my guy. Makes life easier especially if you need to revert some changes and if you're working on another device etc.
It's a nice story, and it leaves many unsolved questions. The idea of pursuing ideal drives artist into such strange life frames sometimes. And the other great thing about creating is self-critique with like inner willful intent to make things done in the particular order.
Bro this game is beautiful I would play this game all week
The vibes of your games are anyways so relaxing and nice.
At least all that work wasn't completely scrapped
The graphics look so great, I wish it wasn't scrapped :(
Wow, that looks quite interesting, and the relations to it throughout your channel are kinda cool (also the proposal game is so wholesome and I love it) Also, one question: Is the Professor based on Professor Martyn Poliakoff from Periodic Videos, because he shares a striking resemblance... Anyways, I love your channel, and it’s always cool to learn more about some of your past projects!
I always love hearing game dev stories. I've been wanting to make a game for a long time. I've been making music and art for a game, along with about 3 pages just full of game ideas, but I've made absolutely zero progress on it. I'm trying to use game maker. What I'd love is to just use premade platformer code, but gamemaker feels so much less modular than unity. Just replacing the assets with my own, reworking the engine to my liking, and fixing the inevitable bugs that come from version differences would take hours upon hours of miserable work for me. I've got so many great ideas and they're all feasible for me to accomplish, but trying to learn how to do it, or even find the information on how to do it is so hard. With game dev, I've never felt more discouraged in one thing in my entire life.
This boss just casually makes a video game as a proposal
I’m sure if you ever decided to pick this up again if you had the inspiration to there would definitely be a following based on the concept alone. But you’re absolutely right. You get to decide how your time is best spent.
Although your games seem boring, your video's are awe some. And this engine you are working on, is also very interesting. I love your programming adventures, you inspire us.
you say that there's nothing interesting about humanoid, but here I am looking on in awe. I think that people often think way too hard.
On the incredibly small chance you ever do decide to finish this game, I would play it. I live for games like these. Oneshot, Rakuen, To the Moon, Undertale - I can't get enough of them.
You don't really have to stand out, as long as it's in public and is good, it will get nice reception.
That music is insanely good
Could you post the source? This sounds like a fun project to build upon. (Not commercially)
I've always had an interest for pixel art and making cute mini games as a hobby, I adore how yet it can exhausting can be incredibly amazing in the end result. I'm planning to make one for my anniversary to my long term boyfriend ❤

I watched it all and that ending after finally defeating Asmodeus through a hard-fought battle made me smile, especially since with the long outro I can just imagine you mirroring yourself in the game beside your wife. Always make backups, and indeed... always Git your stuff! Even if you don't intend to open up the source code, at least make a private repo somewhere so you don't lose anything.
