It's difficult to build a working four-rotor helicopter that spans 100 feet and only weighs 80 pounds. It's even harder when your engine is a 0.7-horsepower person. But one team of engineering students is trying to do just that.

As amazing as this is, they need a bit of input from someone with some athletic experience in the mix. That ride position is terrible, and the upper crank arms (the ones they grip with their hands) are awkwardly short because of it. The lower crank also shouldn't be directly out in front, but below the operator, like a bicycle. Just fixing those two things, then putting someone with excellent conditioning in the cockpit, would likely get them well over 10' with their current design.

His ornicopter, however, could have flown using a man power. It was engineered for movement like climbing a ladder, very efficient. Perhaps better take than this one, as here left goes with left and right goes with right, not the most efficient way of going about it. And I mean this already is awesome, indeed. +GremlinFPV The instability you describe is inherent to all rotary wing aircraft, not only quads. Indeed, this one did not have any kind of control and for this reason it lost the competition to another, even larger quadcoopter - the Aerovelo Atlas, which had huge, 20m diameter rotors turning at just 10 RPM and one very important difference: it had control, allowing the pilot to remain inside the assigned area throughout the flight. So the Aerovelo team pocketed US$250,000.

***** This is not entirely true, the arms are producing torque, just like the legs and while at the moment, they are attached to the same geartrain, what we were discussing was the possibility of changing the gearing ratio for the arms (which just requires changing the size of the arm pedal gear), thus allowing them to bettwer utilise the arm power of the user

Welllll, not as far as getting it flying because the thicker air would cause the rotors to bight into the air more but would take about 4 times the effort to spin them unless they reduce the pitch or diameter and then you'd lose any benefit from that. What they found was, that the pilot or engineer was not that critical. They ended up recruiting a trained cyclist and he had the horsepower to make the thing work and the won the prize prize.
