Finally got my hands on a 3.5 HB agdor montreal axe. Doing some chopping, limbing, splitting, and giving my thoughts on this fine Swedish tool !!

    @@940joey2 It is very much like the 1750 gram PANDEL Rhineland pattern axe I got this winter. I love it ! I Really like the long blade on it. Actually, I wonder what the substantial differences are between the Montreal pattern and the Rhineland . As mine does not have the upswept toe that most Rhineys have. That maple would have been a good one to use the Bucksplit method on. W uld probably have needed to use a couple Splitting strikes in. But I find the split swings have a bit more effect when a good part of the round is still attached to the tree. Theud Bald has a great Vid on using the method. This is the 2nd time I've watched this vid and I enjoyed it even more this time !👍👍👍

    Wow great buy. I have the 2.5 pounder and like it a lot. Im hoping one day we’ll be able to buy just the axe heads. That extra pound and bit width does seem to add a benefit

    Thanks for watching man !! Yeah I couldn’t pass it up !! I love my 2.5 lb as well and I do prefer a boys axe most of the time. Not sure what it is but while using the axe it doesn’t seem heavier, it feels really light in the hand. I notice the American 3.5 lb axes feel heavier compared to this axe, idk maybe it’s just me !!

    Nice work here mate, once you got onto the maple it looked like you were in the zone, clean cuts and good balance too standing on the log in some tricky positions. Had my eye on one of these for a while now, now really wanna give one a go! Awesome 👍

Thank you I like when I find a situation when I have to stand on the tree or not have the perfect scenario to really make me have to think of what I’m doing, I feel like it forces me to learn in the moment !! Ahh man I really hope you’re able to get you’re hands on one of these one day, you’re going to love it !!

    Thank you so much !! Oh yeah I was definitely feeling it toward the end. When I start to get real tired it really makes me think of the men before us that had no choice but to do this. We have a choice to use an axe or not, we choose fo do this because it’s fun and we enjoy it. I must say it’s a humbling experience using an axe, I couldn’t imagine doing this for 8, 10, 12 hours a day. I read somewhere that back in the day when these men would get tired of swinging a heavy axe they didn’t stop, they picked up a lighter axe to give their arms a break. I’m not sure if this is hyperbole or fact.

    Wow you got a steal on that one! That’s a really cool axe. I like how long the bit is. I got to handle a few HB axes at a blade store in maryland, and i ended up leaving without getting anything because of the price and how thick the handles were 🤣. Gransfors gets a bad rap for it, but HB definitely has thicker handles lol. Glad you got it tuned up! The steel ought to be really good on those. Good chopping man!

    Thank you so much man !!! Yeah man I’m still in shock on how cheap I got this axe !! Dang man that’s really cool !! Oh boy you’re not kidding HB handles a insanely thick, makes the gransfors handles look like council tool handles 😂 yeah man the long bit really is nice, I thought it would make it feel wonky but the axe feels extremely nice man. Having they long bit and wide cutting area really makes a difference !!

    Hey you got one and I'm stoked to see how much you like it! A 3.5lb HB Montreal with a straight handle is basically the Dave Canterbury American Felling Axe (Bushcraft Sisyphus has a review comparing them both). Drives me a little crazy that it isn't a "Canadian Felling Axe" given the pattern but anyway... As someone who just bailed hard off a log two days ago 🤕, I commend your balancing skills.

    Thank you so much Matt !!! Yeah man it took a while but finally got one 🙌 I absolutely love this axe !!! Oh really I’ll have to check those videos out 👍 ya know I’ve thought the same thing why would they call a “Montreal pattern axe” and American felling axe, kind of odd. Oh dang man sorry to hear that hope you didn’t get hurt, I’ve taken some spills before, I’m always worried I’m going to fall on the axe. When I feel like I’m really going to fall I toss the axe.

    I can't decide whether I should get this one or its little brother the 2.5 lbs axe. I need to cut down some dead trees behind my house large and small . What do you suggest?

  • @940joey2

    @940joey2

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you so much for watching !!! So I prefer a lighter axe. I’ve owned the 2.5 lb long than I’ve owned the 3.5 lb version. I love both of them and both have a very wide cutting area on them. 9/10 I gravitate toward the 2.5 lb just because it’s what I prefer. The 2.5 lb is more than capable of doing most things that the 3.5 lb can do, but the 3.5 lb feels a bit awkward doing lighter tasks if that makes sense. Also how bit of trees are we talking. If it was me I would go with the 2.5 lb on the 28 inch handle to me it’s the best all arounder 👍

    Thank you so much watching, I really loved making this video, I felt I was really in my groove !! And sometimes it definitely could be camera angle, but sometimes I may be chopping toward myself. Sometimes you can’t always ask for the best scenario when you’re chopping, but what you can do is try to make what ever scenario as safe as possible by just being hyper aware of what’s going on 👍

    Finding the head only was a real score. I have the 2.5 lbs montreal as well and always contemplated getting the bigger brother. What handle choice did you go with ?

  • @940joey2

    @940joey2

    Жыл бұрын

    Absolutely, hard enough to find one of these and even harder to find the head by itself !! I love the 2.5 lb one it’s a great axe and I prefer a lighter axe. It is cool to have the pair, the dynamic duo !! So out of all the handles I have none of the eyes fit quite well, they were all a little to small. These Swedish axes eyes are quite large, turns out it’s near impossible to get a replacement HB handle here in the states. I ended up getting a 30 inch Husqvarna maul handle and that too was a little small I’m the eye, but it was the closest fit. I would have liked to have a curved handle but I suppose it’s nice to have some verity 👍
