HULA LESSON: Aia La O Pele - Week #1

Beginning of a New Month means we will start a brand new hula. Great time to jump in! Coming to you from our Home in Nu'uanu Valley on the Island of Oahu.
- -
This mele hula kuʻi was set to melody by Kumu Mae Lobenstein. The original text was stewarded by Kumu Joseph Ilalaʻole and tells of the wonder of the fire goddess, Pele. We have chosen to learn this mele in honor of the eruption of Kīlauea at Halemaʻumaʻu on Hawaiʻi Island.

Aia La O Pele Lyrics:
Aia lā ʻo Pele i Hawaiʻi ʻeā
Ke haʻa mai lā i Maukele, ʻeā
ʻUhīʻuhā mai ana, ʻeā
Ke nome aʻe lā iā Puna, ʻeā
ʻOaka i ka lani, Noke, noke
E Pele ē, Pele ē
Ka mea nani ka i Paliuli, ʻeā
Ke pulelo aʻe la i nā pali, ʻeā
Aia ka palena i Maui, ʻeā
ʻĀina o Kaululāʻau, ʻeā
ʻOaka i ka lani, Noke, noke
E Pele ē, Pele ē
I hea kāua e laʻi ai, ʻeā
I ke alanui aʻe liʻa nei, ʻeā
A i luna, a i lalo neʻeneʻe, ʻeā
ʻO Pele ka wahine mai Kahiki, ʻeā
ʻOaka i ka lani, Noke, noke
E Pele ē, Pele ē
Haʻina ʻia mai ka puana, ʻeā
Aia lā ʻo Pele i Hawaiʻi ʻeā
Haʻina hō mai ka puana, ʻeā
No Hiʻiaka nō he inoa, ʻeā
ʻOaka i ka lani, Noke, noke
E Pele ē, Pele ē
ʻOaka i ka lani, Noke, noke
E Pele ē, Pele ē
Pele is at Hawaiʻi
She is dancing at Maukele
She surges and puffs
Devouring the land of Puna
Bursting forth, she roars
Oh Pele!
It makes Paliuli beauitful
Fire tongues leaping at the cliffs
It is heard at Maui
Land of Kaululāʻau
Bursting forth, she roars
Oh Pele!
Where will we find peace?
Oh, how we yearn on the road
Above, below, moving here and there
Pele is the woman from Tahiti
Bursting forth, she roars
Oh Pele!
The end of my song
Pele is at Hawaiʻi
Again, ends my song
A name song for Hiʻiaka
Bursting forth, she roars
Oh Pele!

I am so thankful for you, your family and your channel!!!! I have been obsessed with learning hula for more than a decade and have not gotten very far until this video. I am way behind trying to learn language, hands, arms, legs, feet, hips...... I must look and sound like a cartoon character. Many thanks. My Love and prayers to Hawaiians and residents of west Maui.
