Hukam #17 of 52 - Discard wordly ways, falsehoods, and poisonous tobacco [4K]

Sukhdeep Singh goes through Hukam (Command) 17 of 52 given to all Sikhs by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. They are practical instructions that we should incorporate into our lives as they describe the ideal way of life of a Khalsa.
In this video, Sukhdeep Singh explains why we should stay away from tobacco and even stay away from the company of those who consume tobacco/cigarettes.
This video playlist was recorded and uploaded weekly throughout 2018.

Putteh kam meh bhot kitte, never harmed anyone. But over the years I have learnt I hurt myself more so. I continue to abstain for 8 years of any intoxicant. Can be hard at times due to my environment but I remain strong thanks to simran. Having said this I believe it is a choice, a wrong one at that but people need to find out the hard way as no one likes good advise. Wkkwgkf

I am not a Sikh, but the more I discover about Sikhi the more I feel drawn to this spiritual path. This channel has been very educational for me, and I have read bits & pieces elsewhere. What would you recommend I do next ? I feel like I've learned 'bits & pieces' about Sikhi, but I don't have a grand 'overview' of it (that would help me join all these 'bits & pieces' together). Is there a book you could recommend that would give me a more in depth overview (or perhaps you could recommend a particular video) ? I also feel that learning (in a purely intellectual sense) will only take so far. I am keen on first hand experience, and learning how to actually practice something that could start to open up that 'connection to the one'. Again, could you recommend some starting point in that respect (perhaps something I could incorporate into my daily life). I have thought about going to a gurdwara, but I feel a bit nervous about that, as I'm such a 'beginner' (& also I don't speak Punjabi). Any advice you could give me as to what would be a good 'next step' would be very appreciated, as even though I have learned a lot from this channel, I feel that I have to move forward from just watching KZread videos & reading articles.

Roddy Melville Have you go e through the Waheguru course on this channel, it goes through Sikh history from Guru Nanak Dev Ji to Present. You could also try to start to learn Japji Sahib (first morning prayer). Personally I thought I knew what Sikhi was watching these videos but until I had contact with Gurbani (Maharaj Kirpa) I found that I knew nothing, it's so beautiful

Roddy Melville Start feom chanting guru mantar that is 'Waheguru' try to do early morning. as its always better to meditate at that time.. first u can do for 5 minutes and then u can increase ur time gradually. make sure ur head is covered while doing so.. When u speak wa-he-guru... focus on the sound.. and almighty will help u in getting more inner knowledge. and likewise 'guru mantar' u can practise 'mool mantar' thats is "Ek onkar ~ there is only one god satnaam ~ only his name is eternal truth kartapurakh ~ He is the creator of the universe nir-bhau ~ He is not afraid of anyone nir-vaer ~ He is not enemy of anyone Akaal murat~ He is without any form Ajooni- saibhan ~ He is free from the cycle of birth n death Gur-Prasad ~ you can obtain him with the grace of guru May waheguru bless you!

    What about marijuanna

A Singh tobacco is a big no go of course as well as alchol but marijuanna has so many medical properties and is a plant grown in gods soil, I saw this thing where its says 'no drugs should be consumed that dont have any medical benifits' but marijuanna has so many e.g. glacouma, insomnia, pain relief, stress relief there is also many stories of its help with cancer and tumours.

Marijuana would depend on many factors including if you need it for medical purposes, but generally, I would not recommend it. People often bring up the examples of Nihangs using it, but the issue they forget is that the Nihangs often follow a much stricter Maryada than us civilian Sikhs.

  • @TheTurbanatore

Aside from medicine that contains alcohol, Sikhs should refrain from it. Just because you saw some Nihangs do it, doesn’t mean that are correct, and certainly doesn’t mean that the average Sikh should do it. Let’s not forget that Alcohol has and is causing a lot of problems on the Punjabi/Sikh community, and that saying it’s ok to consume it will only give people an excuse.
