Huge Pulsejet Engine Blows Cold Air

Ғылым және технология

www.PulseJetEngines.com
This video is from a few years ago. Since then I have had comments from lots of people going "I dare you to stick your finger in an engine." We'll I already have, though I dont recommend it because if you cause the engine to stop running, it could flame out and cook your hand.
The Thermalpulse 180 design has an extremely wide throttle range, much higher than any other design. The engine can be run at such a low throttle level that the intake exhaust flow only blows cold air, all heat goes out the tail.
The propane tank was nearly empty and I was finishing it off before getting it refilled. Low throttle it runs on vapor, then I tip the tank to feed it liquid propane, there is not much liquid in the tank and I kind of slosh the tank around to get the liquid to come out, and you can see the engine reving up and down from vapor to liquid several times a second.
The engine has a huge throttle range, and can be throttled from minimum to max throttle very quickly, as seen by the sloshing fuel flow throttling.
Dont try this at home... for those of you who just happen to have a pulsejet sitting around.

I believe building an engine like this more or less shows the skill and understanding of mechanical properties by the creator, more than it shows what the engine is capable of. With this in mind, this guy knows what he is doing, and he did a great job!

About 145+dB loud and the echo was insane you could hear it from 20+miles away over water and in the mountains.

the V1 flying bomb, actually. the V2 was a liquid fueled rocket like you might see being used for space launches today(though obviously it wasn't anywhere near as powerful as an actual space rocket).

i remember in ww2 they used it on the buzz bombs hence the name, however these engines are too inefficient when compared to normal jet engines

@chillincruisin Propane is injected into the pipe, which ignites it (via spark, or in his case, a torch). The propane explodes outward, producing thrust. Now there is a vacuum in the pipe, because all the gas has rushed out. This sucks the flame BACK IN, igniting the next spurt of propane. That's why it has a "throbbing" sound- it's exploding propane several times a second. The versions that are straight instead of bent generally use a valve to direct the force of the combustion.

Because they operate below atmospheric pressure part of the cycle, if they get hot enough to be damaged, they implode and stop running, its always easier to crush a tube flat, than it is to cause it to rupture. As long as you dont try to run it on something like nitroglycerin or acetylene, it wont explode.

@damonlandsdown It's a 'pulsejet'. The 'pulse' from an 'ignition' and the specially shaped combustion chamber, cause most of the combustion gases to rush down one tube (the upper one in this vid). This creates a low pressure at the end of the bottom tube which draws in fresh air. This air mixes with the fuel being injected, in the already hot combustion chamber and ignites, starting the whole cycle again. The combustion is not a constant flame (like there is in a true jet engine).

@chillincruisin It is a jet engine with ZERO moving parts, and thus it is very easy to make and keep up. Anyone can make one with just a welder and some pipe, and they almost never break when used properly. It's a good easy way to produce a lot of thrust cheaply, and is therefor used by inventors for insane concepts- like jet powered bicycles, dune buggies, or gliders.

That looks like the engine you built me back in 2006 or 7 i think, you made me one for about 800 bucks, bet you can sell them now for almost tripple that price. I had it for several yrs, did all kinds of experiments with it, sadly had to let it go after owning it about 7 yrs. I always wonder who might have it now, kinda wish i could get it back and keep it forever.
