Huge Pulsejet Engine Blows Cold Air

This video is from a few years ago. Since then I have had comments from lots of people going "I dare you to stick your finger in an engine." We'll I already have, though I dont recommend it because if you cause the engine to stop running, it could flame out and cook your hand.
The Thermalpulse 180 design has an extremely wide throttle range, much higher than any other design. The engine can be run at such a low throttle level that the intake exhaust flow only blows cold air, all heat goes out the tail.
The propane tank was nearly empty and I was finishing it off before getting it refilled. Low throttle it runs on vapor, then I tip the tank to feed it liquid propane, there is not much liquid in the tank and I kind of slosh the tank around to get the liquid to come out, and you can see the engine reving up and down from vapor to liquid several times a second.
The engine has a huge throttle range, and can be throttled from minimum to max throttle very quickly, as seen by the sloshing fuel flow throttling.
Dont try this at home... for those of you who just happen to have a pulsejet sitting around.

I believe building an engine like this more or less shows the skill and understanding of mechanical properties by the creator, more than it shows what the engine is capable of. With this in mind, this guy knows what he is doing, and he did a great job!
I love that enormous echo they create :O
About 145+dB loud and the echo was insane you could hear it from 20+miles away over water and in the mountains.
the V1 flying bomb, actually. the V2 was a liquid fueled rocket like you might see being used for space launches today(though obviously it wasn't anywhere near as powerful as an actual space rocket).
Damm that things loud as hell!!! Especially when it cut off and you could hear the echo.. nice job man!
i remember in ww2 they used it on the buzz bombs hence the name, however these engines are too inefficient when compared to normal jet engines
I was waiting for one HELL of a big BOOM at the end!!!!
impressive verry impressive this is the firs jet engine i have seen that shakes from all the power
@chillincruisin Propane is injected into the pipe, which ignites it (via spark, or in his case, a torch). The propane explodes outward, producing thrust. Now there is a vacuum in the pipe, because all the gas has rushed out. This sucks the flame BACK IN, igniting the next spurt of propane. That's why it has a "throbbing" sound- it's exploding propane several times a second. The versions that are straight instead of bent generally use a valve to direct the force of the combustion.
I'd love to make one of these just for the lols, but i bet my neighbours would call the cops lol

people two miles away would be calling the cops
0:02 That base was epic
If I were that guy, I'd be on the other side of the street already... :P

I nhere you on getting the frig away lol. Bro...this chit was flourecent yellow! lol. close to melting point! ))) I worked machines 30 years and i'd be right there with ya on the other side of the street )))
Because they operate below atmospheric pressure part of the cycle, if they get hot enough to be damaged, they implode and stop running, its always easier to crush a tube flat, than it is to cause it to rupture. As long as you dont try to run it on something like nitroglycerin or acetylene, it wont explode.
Oh! good sound!
@damonlandsdown It's a 'pulsejet'. The 'pulse' from an 'ignition' and the specially shaped combustion chamber, cause most of the combustion gases to rush down one tube (the upper one in this vid). This creates a low pressure at the end of the bottom tube which draws in fresh air. This air mixes with the fuel being injected, in the already hot combustion chamber and ignites, starting the whole cycle again. The combustion is not a constant flame (like there is in a true jet engine).
@chillincruisin It is a jet engine with ZERO moving parts, and thus it is very easy to make and keep up. Anyone can make one with just a welder and some pipe, and they almost never break when used properly. It's a good easy way to produce a lot of thrust cheaply, and is therefor used by inventors for insane concepts- like jet powered bicycles, dune buggies, or gliders.
@MATechz its made for super high speed flying. it supposed to put out more thrust then a jet turbine 3 times its size
soo... how does it blow cold air? I'm guessing some sort of water injection near the start of the exhaust...?
that.....would possibly be the best thing to hit the internet
@Wilzaza The point at which it never really worked anyways, and never contained a warhead.
That echo at 0:41 ... Love it! :D
certainly looked like it was about to go places :D
nice echo. your neighbours must love you :)
what is it that everone does to turn it on?
This one seems more melodious than most... I wonder if one could make a pulsejet pipe organ. With rows of pulsejets of varying diameter...
Thta looks and sounds like a powerful engine there I'd like to put that on either a cart or bike.
That looks like the engine you built me back in 2006 or 7 i think, you made me one for about 800 bucks, bet you can sell them now for almost tripple that price. I had it for several yrs, did all kinds of experiments with it, sadly had to let it go after owning it about 7 yrs. I always wonder who might have it now, kinda wish i could get it back and keep it forever.
That's how my car sounds and feels in the morning!
@MrLearn2board These things are so loud and primal that you get a rush just standing next to one. These can be put on gocarts, motorcycles, etc.... if you're brave enough and have enough open space to try it!
how thick is that pipe? arent you afraid the whole thing collapses or blows apart? Because red hot steel can get very soft.
Sounds like a jet powered didgeridoo
lol, epic echo at the end :D
yeah thats quite loud , nice pj by the way
Awesome fact!
is it powerfull enough for practical use?
so the bottom tube that is connected to the combustion chamber is the intake correct? and the larger side is the exhaust where the thrust is expelled?
EXPLOSEE!!
@allclassics There is a video of a go-kart running off one of these, actually.
that escalated quick.
how is the fuel injected? i heard something about x pipes? are you using these?
how in ww2 did they keep v1 in the air antill hitting their target because it looks like they would just overheat
thats what i sound like when i'm on the toilet.
Cool Buzz-Bomb engine!!
Cool! A self-playing Didgeridoo!
That was actually scary...lol
@Chris17psi it would explode form the stresses of heat+cold... also pulse engines need a ceratin amount of heat to run (not red hot)
love the echo at the end when it shuts off. what is the desibel level of this?
you would never get me as close as that...
You to, my fellow friend.
I'm not fulling getting the pulse jet engine. it pulls and pushes air?
they broke the sound barrier on land lol
Was the glowing visible with the naked eye, or only visible on camera due to infrared?
is the intake the big one on the top and exhaust the small one on the bottom?
cant believe how red hot that pipe gets
What does it making (power?) or pnlu some loud
Impressive
Roast some marshmallows on it.
What are you gona use it for ?
DOES THIS ENGINE HAVE A 162mm(6.3 INCHES) EXAUST CONE AND A 100mm(3.9 inches) INTAKE TUBE?
you should put some heatsinks on it man! then you could put more fule in :D
Does it make thrust?
Its hard to tell, was the intake the little tube or the big one?
yeah...that looks real safe
oh my god, listen to the reverb at the end :)
@MATechz to heat your house. duh!!!!! what else would you use it for????
holy shit!!! look how fast that mother effer heats up!!!
@MATechz you can use it to heat and bend pipes :)))))))
Please answer: what can you use this for? :)
how much thrust does this one produce
Like a bunch of friends of mine did with assault rifles. They played Ode to Joy using different types of guns
wow it looks hot
which end is the thrust coming out of?
What a dangerous machine!!!!!!!
what will happen if you pour water on the hot bit when it heats up
Give the red part a hug
@DDoom Same here man.
holy crap. thats nasty. i've seen a lot of Pulse jets. but when this one fired to full. dang!!
hehe good stuff. now put your finger in the exhaust - full throttle for maximum effect :P
you better get the hell out there
Somebody has to much time on there hands lol
Needed some marshmallows.
is that the Brown Note?
Honey get the barbecue... its time to grill!
I can't believe that thing didn't fall to pieces...
What is that made out of
nice!!!
@MATechz making noise in your back yard to upset the flying birds and your naighbors?
Can I mount one of these on my bicycle?
Can you put it in the back of a Cessna?
How would you ever cool an engine built in this configuration.
that is a hell on of a vuvuzele
damn it echoed at the end lol
THAT echo
what is the use of this thing?
Sounds like a giant angry wasp.
This is crazy! :D
How does it works ?
how is rhat possible? there is no air flow to the top one
hey can u explain me what that is?
Reminds me of a Vuvuzela..
