The world would be a better place if pet stores supported shelters by never throwing these types of things out and just donating them instead. It absolutely drives me insane how many things are ruined in the dumpster that could've been used happily by pets that don't have homes. (example: those other dog beds in the dumpster)

Petsmart and Petco do donate and support shelters. Items that get withdrawn for whatever reason (packaging is wrong, discontinued) is always donated. Either those items were retuened, which stores cannot donate because they dont know what condition they were in when hey were gone from the store, or there's is something really wrong with those items so they are unable to donate them. Someone above said the beds were not stuffed properly so they cannot be donated. Beds like that should be firm.

Donating opened/returned food is dangerous. It could be gone off, someone could have put something in the food, bugs, etc.

The Furry Friends there is a chain called Pet Valu, I used to work for them, but they were constantly helping local shelters and we'd donate things that were getting close to expiration dates

Yeah I work for Pet Supplies Plus and we donate everything that is going to get thrown out to local shelters. Sometimes we'll even donate returned bags of food as long as they haven't gone off, and most of the returns are donated to the shelters as well.

Guys, if you're going to do this, be so, so careful! The PetSmart I worked at smashed all glass and acrylic tanks, glass lightbulbs and fixtures, and poured chemicals on all food and toys etc. To discourage and foil dumpster divers. I felt it was wasteful and BS and it's not policy Nationwide, it's just what my floor manager did. So you could be getting into glass or chemicals. Some Ulta's do this too. I think if a person is willing to do retrieve it, let em have it, but some feel differently. So please take care and caution before attempting dumpster diving at these places and never assume it's safe. Use common sense, like gloves, goggles and kneepads if you're in unfamiliar places where you don't know if they intentionally destroy things before tossing them. ❣️

Seriously haha. I worked at a job that would throw away good stuff but would also smash those long tube CFL bulbs which are super toxic. It's a really fine dust it releases that carcinogenic. Someone digging around in there would probably get very ill, it's too bad there isn't a warning on the dumpster.

Mykenzie Long Waugh it varies from state to state and sometimes cities will have a law preventing it that isn’t a state law. Just look it up for your area and if there are then look for the loopholes.

When items have been purchased and taken out of the store, the associates are required to throw them away if they get returned. Even if it was gently used, you can't risk selling that to someone else. You have no idea what the person could have done to it, or what kind of environment it was exposed to. I think that it's interesting that you find ways to re-purpose these items, but make sure to thoroughly clean them before using them. Also, I think it would be awesome if you used that gate to give your rabbit more space to roam around. You seem like a really kind person that loves his animals, and it's great that you make educational videos based off of your experiences. Keep up the great work!

animeobsessed45 They are not required to throw away everything that is returned. A majority of things returned can be returned to inventory and put back on the shelf. With the exception of opened food/treats, excessively dirty beds/clothes/aquariums, used fish decor, and used shampoos/sprays most everything else is put back on the shelf.

Good call on cleaning things! I would assume that any shelters would thoroughly clean anything that was donated to them for the same reason; they also don't know anything about the history of the products they recieve

I don't work at a pet store but I do work at Starbucks and we are told to throw away any returned coffee beans even if it hasn't been opened. It sucks because there's a good chance nothing is wrong with it (people sometimes buy the wrong one or accidentally get decaf) but rules are rules :/ I have a feeling this is the same thing with Petsmart.

Btw i work at PetSmart and can confirm we put out perfectly fine stuff for various reasons. Please take them. I hide them behind the bin for anyone who wants them and have multiple homeless people that come around to feed their dogs.

The dogs beds were thrown away because they’re not stuffed correctly. They’re supposed to be firm. I work at petsmart and we got some like that too.

Most of this stuff was returned and you have no idea what it could've been exposed to.. Places like petsmart and petco are constantly donating unused items to shelters when items get discontinued or something along those lines.

I work at petsmart as a cashier. About the airpump and similar items, if they were used at all we cannot put them back up in the store.

Dumpster diving for this stuff sounds absolutely amazing, but my question is how do you do it? I mean, without getting caught/yelled at?

I love that you brought home items you knew you didn't need but could donate. That tells me what a kind and loving heart you have.

I’ve never dumpster dove before nor have I ever met a KZreadr that does, it’s nice to see that change and difference between those who use the resources given and those who spend way to much money on stuff unneeded. You are now my favorite youtuber!

I literally buyed a 6 gallon for 125 euro (maybe like 140 dollars) from a petshop before i knew non petshop tanks were cheaper

Save the tank and use it for one of your tarantulas!

Anything that has already been opened / expired, things that are broken, or the manufacturer's packaging is irreparable we damaged out.

I think everyone should dumpster dive. Everywhere. I had a friend who had zero $ for Xmas & did a Walmart dumpster dive. She found well over $1500 of presents for her partner & family. Usable, clean amazing things. I’m all for “the dive”!

Humans are so wasteful. We've been talking a lot of about how much waste we have in the food industry for one of my courses and honestly, it's absurd. Those dog beds, and the food we waste, is absolutely fine but we throw it out instead of giving it to people/animals in need? Its absurd.

I think that Petsmart to get their act together and not throw away perfectly good items to the dumpster when they can just donate or try to continue selling because for absolutely no reason because it’s a waste of money and you did the right thing Tyler.

Almost every retail store has policies where employees HAVE to throw stuff away. It blows and I disagree with it, but if an employee takes the stuff (even to donate) it is considered to be theft. You can get fired and have criminal charges brought against you. It's all corporate greed. When I worked at grocery stores I would get so angry about us throwing away food. These stores throw away TONS of food that could be feeding people who go hungry. It's sad.

it's not petsmarts fault.it's the companies they are contracted to fault. when friskies says they are changing their packaging they legally have to throw it out otherwise it's considered theft cause it's friskies product and ip.

Items where I work that are used and not in new condition that are returned go to the dumpster, as we’re not suppose to sell used items. That goes for “items customers aren’t satisfied with” as well, Luckily some stores don’t destroy everything, but I try to save some of what is to get thrown away where I work and give it to family/friends. So most of the time I always have a happy pug when I get home from work lol

has anyone thought about buying something, returning it, and then later on going dumpster diving to get it back? lmao i feel like that'd be a perfect loophole for getting things that you specifically need

Circle tanks are really bad for fish, and betta fish are actually supposed to have at *least* 5 gallons. Please don't use that circular tank for fish

That's true. They can have a 2.5 gal minimum, but the bigger the better. The spherical ones are what's not good for fish because there's less surface area at the water's surface to get oxygen from. Cylindrical tanks are fine.

I have a beta in a 10 gallon, the minimal for a beta is 5 gallons, while the best is 10 gallons, which you should always get if you’re able to. 2.5 is way too small for a beta, contrary to popular belief.

MaxieBoyo I’ve been keeping Bettas for over a decade and can’t say I’ve ever had issues with a sorority. The only time females tend to fight is if their environment is wrong for them. ie: tank size. People make the dumb mistakes of thinking 3.5 gallons is fine for any fish to live in. Sad.

The African Gray in the background at the beginning is hella cute. Definitely my favorite domesticated bird species

Love the new hair color it looks awesome! Also when you squeaked the dog toy my dog got rly excited😂 I had to throw one of his toys a few times to calm him down XD he loves squeaky toys :P
