Sega Saturn on MiSTer FPGA is now on update all and while its still in beta there are still a ton of of best Sega Saturn games and Sega Saturn hidden gems to play! MiSTer FPGA Saturn core fun times! and the FPGA Core has been updated again! Bringing in some important fixes to some of the best Sega Saturn games! so let's do ANOTHER testing update video on the Sega Saturn FPGA core because why not! The ram controller has been rewritten and fixed up in dual updates! and we have another new core as of 6/28/2024 and its been added to MiSTer FPGA Update_All so all the improvements from March to today on the MiSTer FPGA Saturn core are available to all!
You will see a HUGE improvement in performance on 2.5V MiSTer FPGA ram modules and a ton of other fixes!

I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
SRG320 just updated the Sega Saturn core with new code...AGAIN......so of course we are going to test the new binary and see how it performs. and now it's been folded into MiSTer Main and Update_all! Seriously...the improvements in performance and compatibility is a small retro gaming miracle! A LOT of games we tested previously have HUGE improvements and some new games work that never used to! and some games that STOPPED working on previous cores are now back and better than ever! Plus Burning Rangers has a seriously awesome improvement!
and now we have new working games that never worked before as well! Amazing. This is a core testing video with user requests! So enjoy!
This core fixes a massive ton of issues from the last Saturn core. Also make sure you update MiSTer main as there are some CD loading fixes in there that benefit Saturn!
and now it seems like more people that have older RAM modules / the four chip ram module variants are seeing more success running the current Sega Saturn MiSTer FPGA core too!
and game saves are here! Which is HUGE for the core! Because playing Sega Saturn in FPGA on MiSTer FPGA without being able to save your game was NOT easy!
So that means its time to test a new batch of games...viewer requests too!
Note: this is the current build of the Sega Saturn core for MiSTer FPGA and NEW GAMES WORK! but really its the save functionality that is the huge thing! Also this is a MiSTer FPGA Sega Saturn setup guide as the core is once again manually installed and you need to switch to MiSTer Unstable Main vs being on Stable main...which I will show you how to do in the video!
This is part of the MiSter FPGA Sega Saturn testing series...but now with a brand new core build! So lets put it through its paces! Because the audio quality on the new core just sounds PERFECT...in spots!

Saturn core sound actually works on my mister now! srg you absolute legend. I’m playing through Nights and the sound is no longer glitched. I’ll probably spend half the day tomorrow testing random games out.

I’m an update all person. I tend to favour stable over bleeding edge. I gotta say, the Saturn Core and real hardware with a MODE is pretty much indistinguishable.

When I got a MiSTer around April 2023, a ton of Saturn games didn't even boot. We've come a long ways since then.

@@VideoGameEsoterica Defo. I honestly feel like a full catalogue compatibility might not be that far away.
I have a real Saturn with a ODE so I've only been using the update all versions so far and usually only playing saturn games on the real hardware. Can't wait for the day I can just put my Saturn in a box and just use the MiSTer instead. (I've already done this with my NES, SNES, 32X, PSX, GBA, etc...)

I have a regression (which I don't remember having before). SEGA Rally (NTSC-J) shows a White Screen and hangs after the SEGA Sports logo. However, SEGA Rally Plus (NTSC-J) works fine as does the NTSC-U version of SEGA Rally so I am at a loss.

If you enable bios getter in update all yes
I usually wait for the Update All changes. Looking forward to seeing how this works with my 2.5 RAM, as I'd been waiting to get new RAM.

i update the core every once in a while from the unstable nightlies build. played some Grandia on it. noticed that the opening bit in the throne room has some flickering textures. updated to the latest update_all Saturn build and... it still happens :( oh well, i'm sure one of these updates will fix it and the fact that a lot of games look like they were fixed with the new update is awesome. Also hell yeah, show more Powerslave

Been playing conker for the last couple of days non-stop btw, not a single issue, even multiplayer is perfect (thanks again VGE and the guy who made the patch), and this latest Saturn core sounds really good on my 2.5 RAM, maybe a tiny bit of clipping (music not sfx), but nothing really distracting tbh, I can really enjoy some Saturn games now, think a full play through Clock Work Knight 1 & 2 is in order, followed by Policenauts. Edit> I just realized the MegaCD core has full redbook audio support, so it is possible on MiSTer.

Yeah, and update all should instal all BIOS files automatically, so much easier, you have to go into update all settings and activate it, there are tons of other options too.

Some games look perfect but others (like Radiant Silvergun) are causing my consumer Trinitron to have this tearing where everything around the top left corner is getting shifted/pulled in that direction during gameplay. Any idea what this is and if it will ever be corrected?

Odd, Update All isn't updating any cores for me today, including my Saturn core. It's been quite a few days since I updated, but I checked my Saturn version and it shows v240323, so I don't think mine has updated since March. Is my updater broken somehow?

@@VideoGameEsoterica Maybe one day though, maybe if a version of MiSTer with a compute module for a Pi ever exists, a MiSTer-Pi hybrid would make those things possible, mind you, the Replay 2 will have a CM slot to make FPGA/RISC hybrid emulation possible et cetera, an FPGA for up to 5th gen, and RISC for 6th gen, could just something like MiSTerCast to use whatever is running on the compute module, would be great for playing decompiled ports like Ship of Harkinian etc with much lower latency than an X86 PC can offer. MiSTer has everything it needs for hybrid emulation when someone or crew want to take up the task, plus I'd also love to see MiSTer & Replay OS come together one day in one ultra FPGA/Pi console, which would be fairly simple to do.

For some reason Sega Rally stopped having music with this new core. It used to work fine. Am I the only one? I have a 3.0 dual ram build

Panzer dragoon zwei (EU) (resets after title screen), Quake (US) (now hangs on first loading screen ), virtua fighter (US) (no longer has character select music or music in game), panzer dragoon saga (EU) (horrible continuous noise on title screen and intermittent loading). I find this the same on both my misters - one is dual ram and one is a single ram build. Both were bought pre made, so I’ve no idea which ram versions they have etc

Mister has been one of the best gaming investments I've ever made, but on the flipside it's been detrimental to reducing my game backlog and the Saturn core continually improving is not helping at all!

I've been manually updating. I don't know why people wait for update all,. it's so easy to copy the file over. I get it if it's in a really alpha stage, but I played through Symphony of the Night last year.
