I actually prefer to do my Quarks etc. - either with fruits or with herbs - from scratch. And Aldi has e.g. precut frozen fruits with decent prices to do this. www.aldi-sued.de/de/produkte/produktsortiment/kuehlung-und-tiefkuehlkost/tk-obst-und-gemuese.html There is more than that in the markets - do not know of some is not available all year but in addition to the raspberries they have a fruit sortiment that is called "... topper" - really small cut different fruits to put into joghurts or onto the Müslis. Quark with 8-Kräuter or with Schnittlauch tastes great, too. Just add some pepper and salt, garlic, maybe some lemon juice, mustard and a spoon of Majonaise. Together with potates it tastes delicious and makes a good meal especially on hot summer days.

I like buying goods at Aldi's, though if I want to get organic food of happy animals and high quality, I'll rather turn to Alnatura. Alnatura is a supermarket chain that solely sells organic products. A family of six will need to safe money, though. Nice video anyway. Has anyone ever told you that you're a really sympathetic family?

Discounters (Aldi, Lidl, Penny, Norma) are great for general grocery shopping. The quality is at least as good as name brands, often better (according to independent tests). And one can save so much money. I personally like my NORMA best, as I never ever had a mediocre product there, let alone a bad one. And Norma has a quite limited product range compared to others (due to almost complete lack of name brands), so that I don't get overwhelmed by a thousand choices. I know all my usual stuff where it is by heart and find everything with closed eyes. That's the ideal shopping experience, at least for me.

I love that! We have always felt like children are welcome here. Even in public you hear children crying or throwing tantrums and it's no big deal. Everyone just smiles and keeps on walking. It's so nice! In the US, we'd get dirty looks if our kids had meltdowns. It's like they don't understand childhood development.

Well, I do use the time the previous customer is served and place my items on the belt in a way that the large heavy things are in the front and fragile things are at the end. When the time comes that I have to put my stuff in my bags or at least in my shopping cart, I don't have to think about my actions any longer, just grab the items and put it in the bag, the bags or in the bag(s) and the shopping cart as fast as they come. When I am at the car in the best case I can just lift the bags in the trunk and be ready, in the worst case I resort/repack some goods and add those goods that made it just into the shopping cart and not into the bags. Sooooooo .... you win the race before you even greeted the cashier and get into the packing position at the cash register. ;-)

Here in northern Germany (don't know about the south), there often are an Aldi and Edeka right next to each other (on the same lot), this way you can get all the basics from Aldi and if you need a little bit more selection, you can go do Edeka. The quality at ALDI especially with produce is very good. You get your money worth there. Edeka has more variety and of fresh meats and cuts from the butcher right in the store. So, typically I will go to both stores during a grocery run.

Maybe you'll ask your kids: Do you remember the house with the pool and the movie Saturdays and the pizza/döner Fridays? I'm sure they all will sigh and say: oh yeah, great times! Memories are made of this... precious moments, these are the days, keep them in your heart! ☺

If you want the true german shopping experience you´ll need to keep a few foldable laundry baskets in the trunk of your car and when u finish shopping u just bring the shopping cart to your car and unload everything in those baskets. This will make it easier for you to load and unload your car and saves you from using too many plastic bags. It also saves you time at the register bc u can just quickly toss everything in the cart and don't have to deal with bagging your items. :)

For even healthier and more varieties of schorle - just get apple, johannisbeer or other juices (bio/naturtrub(cloudy)) and just put in your own carbonated or non carbonated water...you control the % - no added sugar, and the pre-made schorle has a preservative usually as well.

if your tapwater tastes ok, for six people, you might want to think about investing in a soda stream to make your own soda. you'll just have to exchange the carbon dioxide cylinder, wich will be easier on your back as well, instead of carrying around all that extra weight in schorle. and there are so. many. awesome. juices to pick for your homemade schorle.

YES! I buy apple juice from a regional "Mosterei" who use apples grown in their own organic "Streuobstwiese". That might be a bit more expencive than supermarket juice, but i think that is worth it. Also if you happen to have your own apple tree(s) you can bring them your apples (and pears and sometimes even other fruits and berries) to "vermosten" and you get juice from your own fruits. Maybe in a year or two my trees will produce enough for me to do that 😊 To hell with pesticides, added sugars andpreservatives and other nasty stuff!!

When I'm in Germany, I like to buy high-quality juices in glass bottles, which is much better packaging-wise (plus, they taste much better!). I wonder if there's a Getränkemarkt nearby where you live, Sara? They usually have a huuge selection of beverages. I think that's a very German thing to do, too - the inevitable trip to the Getränkemarkt on Saturday, usually performed by the husband in order to stock up on beer for the weekend. :)

Aldi is and has always been a bit cheaper because they have fewer brand names and pack less food for the shelf than, for example, Edeka. Aldi sells more cheaper goods than pure branded goods, 80% of which were produced by the same brand manufacturers under different names. Compare the manufacturer addresses! That is why they are not cheap products, but "camouflaged" branded products, sometimes even better! 😉👍 You are an extremely sympathetic family and I like it as a German that you feel comfortable here and enjoy our culture! 😉👍🇩🇪

If you by jam and Quark you are free to mix as you like.if you by the low fat Quark you can mix it with milk to be more creamy.in summer a topical German meal is Kartoffeln mit Quark, so potatoes and Quark with herbes, the frozen ones from Aldi work great. I would like to see the facial expressions of the people if that happens 😜😉 Did you somehow notice wether there more families with many children's in that area? Having Aldi or Lidl close to you is definitely a good opportunity to safe some money from time to time. I don't know how it is to have that almost every day, but for my personal opinion laughing happy kid's are the best noise ever. What it means to that this area is alive. Sarah, please don't let yourself be put under pressure at the supermarket checkout, no matter how huge your purchases are! Even if the cashier breaks another speed record, take the time to stow everything away without stress. You're right, of course, US shopping is much more relaxed, but see it this way - in Germany you can finish time-consuming shopping more quickly 😉 I always buy fruit, vegetables and flowers at a farmer‘s' market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Here you will not only find the freshest goods directly from the region, it is also a visual and olfactory feast for the senses. Unlike in a supermarket, shopping at a weekly market is great fun. In addition to fruit and vegetables, you can also get delicious cheese, fish, meat and poultry. It may be more expensive, but we support the local farmers. Thanks for another wonderful video 😍 Your pool will definitely be the attraction of the neighborhood 😊 PS Loved the new music 🎵

Because of that there often was a special line for customers with just a few items, called "Schnellkasse". Since many food chemics are banned you cant storage fresh food as long as in that time - so people got used to shop more often - an the actual shopping culture was born - often but less. With all of the pros and cons.

Once in a while they have quark but instead of typical fruit quarks the have some crazy flavors that you can clearly see people avoid. General information: ALDI (Albrecht Discount). LIDL, Penny started as discounters with assortments of about 1500 different products of house brands and simple store equipment, so they could keep the prices low. EDEKA (Einkaufsgemeinschaft Deutscher Einzelhandels-Kaufleute) and REWE (Revisionsverband der Westkauf-Genossenschaften) are retailers with an assortment of about 15000 brands, even higher qualities up to top brands, which are quite expensive like my birthday-whiskey Scotch Highland Park, 18 years old (for the same price as your complete haul). Times changed, and the retailers generated their own house brands REWE = JA, EDEKA = Gut und Günstig, to close the gap to the discounters. The discounters themselves tried to close the gap to the retailers by integrating quality brands into their assortment. So today you will find quite everything you want, concerning quality level. It will be a question of habit, the longer you stay here.

Aldi is a German company by the way, or more precisely: two independent companies named Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. Theys were founded by the Albrecht brothers in 1961, while its origins go way beyond that. Aldi just means Albrecht Diskont - or discount - by the way. Before the split both it was only one company. Both Aldis separated also the globe between the two companies, normally if one Aldi is in a country the other will not join. The USA are an exemption to that rule, because both Aldis are present there.

I hear a lot of foreigners comment on how stressful the bagging at the register is, though my question is - is there no bagging area in these stores? Unless I only have a handful of items, I can put in one bag or my backpack I just put the stuff back into the cart and bag in the bagging area or at the car (so I don't have to bring the bags into the store). That may be less efficient but makes the process a lot less stressful.

  • @apfeltpunkt2053

Yes, there usually is a bagging area at the front windows. It's not luxurious, but it's there. You can also drop garbage there. Edit: I don't have a clue how the other guys got that much off topic here... But at least in Berlin it's possible to repack your items some meters behind the cashier. There usually are some few small Tables or at Aldi it's the window bench. This may be different at Discounters outside of cities but that's how I know it from the walkable stores within the city areas. So you can usually pack your stuff back into your cart and then repack into your bags some meters behind the register. There usually is a cardboard/plastic disposal too. But it can be crowded at rush hours depending on where you shop.

Not necessarily. Remember In 2018, 2019, 2020 we had tropical temperatures from April to October. Luckily this summer seems to be more „normal“ 😅

Summer where you can walk around outside in t-shirts and shorts typically ends around the end of August. ... A typical September would be a bit cool, windy and rainy. But it is possible to even get a few warm days in October - they are called - if you have them - "Goldener Oktober". Then it gets colder and colder. The first snow could come around November (there are always exceptions with a small possibility of snow in October) -- and around Christmas there might be no snow at all - that is called "Weihnachts-Tauwetter" - if there was snow before, it might have molten away till Christmas ;-) But it is most likely to snow in January and February, even if there was no snow at all until the end of the year. Somehwere around March or April is the time when spring comes - with exceptions, it could be warm in an exceptionally warm February too (maybe with a cold March) or you could get the last snow in May - I once had that, but just once in my life ;-) The April weather could be everything in one day, therefore in German there is the saying "April macht was er will" (April does what it wants) and that refers to the weather. It could be rainy and cold then warm and dry then back to rainy and cold again, all in two hours ;-) And that april-weather as it is called could of course happen in May too, so watch out when the forecast says there is "April Wetter" ahead ;-) Usually it starts to get comfy warm in May or at least June.

I like going to Kaufland because it's huge and I always find the things I need. They also have a good variety of vegetarian/vegan options compared to smaller stores like Aldi and Lidl. Sometimes I can't even find the most basic vegetables and fruits at these stores and that sucks when I have a recipe for something and need those specific items.

Packing your bag at the checkout takes some practice, eventually you'll get a hang of it. You could also mix your own Schorle and have even more control of how much juice is present. My mother-in-law likes just enough juice to give it a taste but mostly just water.

Haribo stands for "Hans Riegel Bonn" thats the name of the founder and the city where the gummybears were invented, phoneticaly (as to pronounce it right for an american native) it would be something like "ha-ree-bow" i guess 😉

On Sundays we love to visit zoos or little animal parks! We love to shop on Fridays at 7pm because we almost the only ones in there and no one has to wait behind us😊 We also have Aldi and Edeka next to each other. In Edeka you'll find Lupinen icecream, that is made out of flowers like this kind of yoghurt, sooo good and healthy! On Saturday evenings friends or family come over for a barbeque and relax in the garden.

Another great video! You even survived the barbecue smoke! I saw one of your bags of salad had Feldsalat in it. I‘ve never seen or had Feldsalat in the US. Do you like it? I like it a lot. Most Germans I know make their own dressing and pour it on the whole salad. Once when I had friends over they were perplexed that the salad didn’t already have dressing on it, and that I had set out 4 bottles of dressing on the table. That points to another difference: Americans like choice. I’ve since learned to make my own dressing and put it on the salad.

If you ever happen to be near or in Bonn, where Haribo is from, they have like a Haribo house basically next to the Bonn central train station with tooooons and tons of Haribo candy. Nothing is pre packaged, so you can grab a bag and put in what you want. The price depends on the weight. It has all the normal flavours and types which you can get here as well as variations that are more common in other countries.

Here are some tricks which make bagging easier. First of all the Milk...don't bag it at all. Just take a whole box with Milk and put it either under the card or in a special holder some cards have. When at the check out, just give the cashier one Milk and tell her or him how many you decided to buy. More isn't necessary. (I usually buy one box plus one for the conveyer, because it saves me the time fumbling one out of the box and back in) Otherwise, there are special bags you can attach to your card. If you sort the groceries when you put them on the conveyer belt, you can just sort the stuff into it from the get go.

Oh, btw, it is actually cheaper if you buy juice and sparkling water and mix your Schorle yourself. Same with the quark, btw, if you want a fruity version, the best solution is to mix your own one. Either by using actual fruits (strawberries and Cherrys are perfect for that), or mixing in some jam.
