There is a lot of cost and energy inefficiency in this system - 2 separate inverter systems and that Sonnen battery setup costs a fortune as it's designed for retrofit to an existing system. If you knew the customer wanted to add a battery system later it would have been far more cost efficient to install a good hybrid inverter upfront, of which you could directly link batteries to with far less complexity, cost and space requirements. This Sonnen system is for retrofit to existing PV systems, and has it's own 2 way inverter. You have a setup here now where you get PV DC energy, convert it to 240v AC, then Sonnen system converts it back from 240v AC to DC to store in batteries, then converts it back from DC to 240v AC when needed. Each conversion stage, especially DC->AC->DC, has an efficiency loss, and just generates heat. A hybrid inverter would have just taken the PV DC and done a single efficient, DC-DC voltage conversion for battery storage and not actually feed the grid tie with excess power as AC. On top of that there is more expense and complexity as you require all those current probes and metering systems for it to work out what power it can grab from the grid tie. I bet no calculations have been done on total system efficiency when you are using PV energy stored for later use from this in-out-in-out (shake it all about) system. There is going to be at least a 10% efficiency power loss, possibly more....and no doubt £1000's in upfront financial costs vs hybrid inverter and simpler direct connect battery.

The UK is massively committed to renewables, way more than we should be and we've shunned nuclear which has left us dangerously exposed (luckily the government seems to have now figured this out). The truth of what happened last month is we don't have nearly enough gas storage in the UK so medium-sized spikes in wholesale prices feed through to consumers very very quickly. Looks a nice system with the backup addon for if grid power goes down.

A quick thought, for cheap energy storage from solar. You can get hot water immersion heater diverter using excess energy from solar; but it requires a hot water tank with immersion heater of course. This allows you to divert excess electrical energy from solar into heated hot water with good efficiency, and with a capital cost about £300. You get about 8 kWh of energy storage and means you can turn off a gas boiler in summer - no electric pump checking for demand - no pilot light. I would certainly recommend this cheap route to store excess solar energy before installing batteries.

  • @Tom55data

@@shilks8773 1) By definition it cannot be a combi boiler has you require a hot water tank. 2) The discussion on removal of gas from homes has a interesting issue associated with it. CCGT for electricity generation is around 35% efficient, by law a gas boiler is >95% efficient. Which do you think the government should concentrate of getting rid of first ! 3) Replacing home heating with hydrogen is stupid since the government is pushing for blue hydrogen (the rest of the world calls this brown hydrogen). Brown hydrogen comes from petrol production - about 95% of all hydrogen is created by the petroleum industry. So you can see why hydrogen is being pushed so hard - it retains the status quo. Of course, you will argue, you will use green hydrogen (from water splitting), but that is not that efficient, and getting governments to not be lobbied by the oil industry to recolour brown hydrogen as blue hydrogen will be "difficult". Careful what you wish for, and be careful for the actually efficiencies of production and storage in the push for "green-washed" energy.

The specs were supposed to be 568A for residential and 568B for business. And you only really needed to use both for a crossover cable before MDI-X. Now, if there's existing cabling, match the existing installation standard for the site, either A or B. If it's completely new, just build out using the B wiring standard. Also, when using shielded twisted-pair, the cable ends need to be the shielded variety (metal).

A and B are completely interchangeable, as long as you do both ends the same. B has slightly better crosstalk rejection, so it’s preferable, and it is what most people use. You should also always measure your cables, preferably with a certification tester, to verify that everything is correct, as you might have gotten a dodgy roll of cable, water ingress etc. Also, it’s a good idea to add a strain relief boot to the connectors when crimping them. And it’s not called a glass head, it’s an 8P8C connector, in layman’s terms it’s called an RJ45 connector.

Reason we can't go 'All Solar, Wind etc' Is the kinetic energy needed in turbines , when theirs a requirement for more power you can speed up or slow down, you can't do that with "Renewables", Which is why we should invest in Nuclear more, cleaner than Gas/Coal, more reliable than all the others and safer in almost every aspect.

This is mainly to cut down out electric bill and be a selling point for the house in the future. Can this system have a wind turbine attached? Very windy where I live. Great informative video this one, I watched the first then popped across to this one. Very neat job.

Interesting video. The question it always seems to come back to is how much do battery units cost and how long would that money last if you just paid for power at the higher rate. Would it be cost effective to charge batteries on low night rate electricity and use in the day time if you had enough batteries or couldn't charge fully by solar. Unfortunately solar companies just seem to want to jump on any one showing an interest :( looked good though.

So after three, multi day power cuts this year I am thinking a battery storage system may be the way to go. We don't have solar as don't have the right orientation to pick up the Scottish sun. Could a system like this be installed to take advantage of night time electricity charges and then be used to run the house in a powercut. All my neighbours are using petrol generators to keep essentials like freezers going. Be interested to know the likely cost of this system. I have an idea of price for petrol generator but this looks a more tidy solution?

Any battery can provide power during blackouts, it all depend on the inverter look for a good inverter like vitron Quatro and it will handle everything for you, if power goes out it will automatically switch to battery so fast your pc, tv etc won't even turn off.. This vid system is awful value for money .. Look for unaffiliated companies and ask them about off grid system (15k to 20k pound for solar panel, inverter, battery will be sufficient for a good setup to power your ac charge a car etc.. ) i don't know about installation cost but budget another 5 to 10k

TT earthing it with a earthing relay when on island mode as the inverter normally is a IT battery inverter arrangement and requires careful thoughts on the earthing in island mode... also need to take loads in island mode into concern

I have the 14kw Tesla £7500 fitted. It has taken over 4 times since November and powered the house in a power cut. I would advise getting the biggest battery you can. Since here in the UK we have one sunny day and then it's cloudy for a week. I am a low electric user, so a bigger battery could (2X Teslas) get me to that next sunny day. Fortunately, I can plug my car in to get all the excess solar; I hate exporting. I will be getting a Sunamp heat battery soon too. You will find that there is more than enough energy to be stored from a sunny day, even on an average solar system.

Why does these installs NEVER show what the grid is pulling, Most homes have smart meters.. Given most battery systems the difference between them isn't really KW it's more how the inverter will discharge itself. Solis inverters for example cannot read the grid correctly and IHD units will show 40-60w grid pull (1-2kw a day) Given the price of these units you'd think it would be first thing to show off. Before and after on grid pull.

Unless your electricity is very expensive, or your utility doesn't offer a good credit on solar back to the grid(which is my situation. They give .66kWh bill credit for every 1kWh I put back on the grid) a battery won't ever pay for itself IMO. For me, the battery gives me peace of mind and a little more independence. It's not about saving money.

Hi, Great video. I'm thinking about installing a battery storage system at the minute. I've got an EV and currently on the Octopus go tariff (currently 7.5p/kWh) so I'm thinking i'll charge the batteries at night on the off-peak tariff and use the battery therefrom throughout the day, minimising my peak tariff usage and ultimately energy bill... I'm keen to understand if there are any concerns with storing the battery system in the garage with no frost protection? Also, I've seen a combined unit by Voltacon which reads well and wondered if you'd had any experience with their products.

Company parking lots should be covered by solar, so your car charges while you work. When you get home in the evening you plug your car into the home, and run the home from the car. Makes sense and the technology isn't overly complex. It will require bi-directional infrastructure, which is basically the only thing that makes sense.

My payback on my system has not been achieved yet, but when my battery fails again it will be out of warranty. So if I get to 8 years trouble free fantastic it will have been cost effective. But a battery failure now would add a £2300 extra cost to my aging system. I have decided if this happens I will not replace the battery, I will invest and add an extra 8 kw of solar ground level to improve winter months.

My year is from 1st September. Then the remainder this battery charges to 100% every day. My question is is all of this install solar charging this battery or is it split. Is this system connected to economy 7 to charge these battery's in cheap rate.

In Australia, there is a national battery testing center.........they ran simulated, 3 bedroom home, draw down and recharge, daily cycled loads for long term testing over some years. They tested systems provided by suppliers like Redflow, Tesla Power wall, BYD etc. What they discovered was that in their final report the Lithium batteries, lost 15% ( BYD best performer) to 30% (Tesla Power wall etc) were the worst in the first 4 years. Australia has also experienced problems with Lithium battery fires in storage applications and changed the install code to mitigate fires. The findings were, that Lithium batteries, have lifespans of about 10 years.......given that capacity degrades continually over that time. The devil is in the detail, and explaining all the costs, is a step towards transparency so that people know how this all adds up........but, the full story of LIFESPAN is a significant aspect of cost per kw/hr over time.

It's a shame you didn't share the math, I think a lot of people don't know how to do the equation's to know what they need and there are alot of sales and marketing that's misleading. I think that would do alot to ensure better knowledge to the public. The battery being a based Calc, then everything else on top. So as you've done this a little backwards, how did that work out? Is the solar current/power matched?
