Hi. I start every morning with Laura and then head right to Aaron's father's sermons. His detailed teaching of the Bible, verse by verse, has saved my life! And he's so funny! I can't do a 1/5 of what Laura can in my own yard due to medical problems and disability, but I've been watching them since the beginning and love seeing their progress and changes they've made. And I highly encourage you to watch Pastor Paul, too! Be safe and take care!!
Oooh! A stone wall in front of the orchard would be stunning and a great tie in with the design around the house and Hartley. Love that idea!

We had a hawk get one of our Robin's. Upset me so. One day it was trying to get into my chicken pin.. From then on we would run it off every time it showed up. Some hawks can get huge. I would run it off if it keeps coming back to protect your cats.
Laura I’m sure you know how you literally brighten everyone’s day with a simple “Hey Guys how’s it going?” But today I especially helped. Life has been tough and I look forward to getting of on my own brain even for a little while when watching your videos. Thank you. You and the family are truly a blessing 🌸🌼

The hawk was likely a Coopers Hawk or Sharp-Shinned Hawk. Both of these acrobatic raptors are excellent at catching song birds. And are great pest control for rodents and managing populations of invasive House Sparrows and European Starlings. Such a cool experience. Good job! It means you’re creating a balanced ecosystem!

“Acrobatic raptor”! That would be a great name for a race horse or something. I was thinking to myself that it might be preying on the little birds there in the maze and your comment confirmed that. Thanks for the info. So cool. 🦅

We occasionally have a Cooper’s hawk that will sit and camp the bird feeder. If I notice the birds aren’t out there for a bit I will usually see the hawk. Sometimes I’ll bring the feeder in just to break the cycle but those guys gotta eat too and it’s all about the balance in nature anyway. We love them all and it’s sure nice to have such great rodent control.

Laura, I may have shared this with you last time you harvested butternuts, but one of my favorite recipes with them is: roast a salted and olive oiled butternut, cut in half, on sheet pan face down with a little water until soft and caramelized. Use it to make quesadillas with caramelized onions, goat cheese and cilantro. It’s one of my favorite fall recipes. I cook quesadillas in olive oil with salt until tortilla is lightly browned and crisp. (You can sub goat cheese and cilantro if those aren’t to your liking) It was a Martha Stewart recipe. Congratulations on you beautiful harvest.
I’m at work and my husband is home sick and he sends me a text, “she harvested 64 butternut squash! “. I got him hooked on your channel. 😂🎣
I vote for a beautiful Stone Wall in front of the orchard. It would be dreamy and kind of Anne of Green Gables like plus provide definition. Can you imagine an apple tree cascading over a stone wall that you could climb on? Anyway that’s just a thought!

Laura, you are excited about your produce harvest this year. I am excited about your harvest! Thank you for taking us along to the new property. One of my favorite childhood memories is the story my mother told about my father and mother walking their new farm property line together and imagining what their lives would bring. Mother always repeated how amazed (and proud) she was that her husband could dig a hole by hand so large and deep when he was planting the cornerstone pole to mark the property line of their new homestead.
This is what I found: Heavy rain or over enthusiastic irrigation is the most common reason for butternut squash splitting. This extra water signals to the squash that it should grow more. The problem is, the outer shell has already hardened, so when the fruit grows, there isn't anywhere for it to go. It's like blowing a balloon up.
It feels like it was just yesterday that we saw you seed your yard. It has grown in so quickly!
Good morning from Western Oregon, another sleepless night but so pleased that Laura and the rest of you can be here with me in these wee hours of the morning. Great video. Love that you take us along for the unexpected hawk , pear just whatever is happening cats children etc. Always interesting!
I love how you mix formal and informal in your garden design. It is so beautiful. Love the area of the new property by the ditch too. So interesting about the previous owner and how your family knew him.
Yes do arock wall in the orchard, that would look amazing!!
Laura, I love the blouse you’re wearing. That shade of green is beautiful on you!
Laura I’ve had pair trees for over 30 years and I can tell you that pairs never get ripe on the tree at least not like experience you take them off you let them sit for a week and they’ll be ripe and ready to use!
What a MAGNIFICENT butternut squash harvest! I loved Laura's clear, detailed (as usual!) explanation of how to know when a squash is ripe, complete with visual examples, and advice to eat the scratched ones 1st. Agree: Laura immediately chomping on a random "found" pear was the best part of this video, ha. I really enjoyed the history of the gardening doctor previous owner. Laura's sharing this rich feeling of connection with the land is the icing on the cake.
How fun it would be to keep a large portion of the new property wild-a wildlife habitat for Benjamin and Samantha to explore.
I'm hoping for a lavender row! lol either around the shed or hedge around the orchard. love GA
Aaron is rocking the grass pathways. Genius.
That hawk is after those little song birds. 😕
First, I think you should have a rock wall to separate the orchard to the grass pathways, of course will need entrances for mowing, but it will finish off the quaint cottage feel of the area. Make it more rustic. Second question (still watching video), can you grow butternut squash on a trellis? I learned so much from this video, thank you! How many of us use your videos over and over again for instructional purposes, my hand is raised! This one will be visited again for the butternut squash, my favorite squash. And that wild area, oh my, treasure and history, so very glad its yours.
The damaged ones look like the boogie woogie man! Those will be fun to decorate
I just adore your new property! I think of it as The Secret Garden and low-and-behold, you actually have a secret garden out there! I am so glad you showed us the rose hips, grape vines, apricot, and pear trees! My grandma used to have a massive garden and if the rain was "irregular" or too heavy, her winter squash would "split". This was in North Carolina though so I don't know if it could be the same thing that happened to your crop. Thank you for a great video!
I appreciate that you didn't put music on when you were renovating the chicken coop planter. I do not often enjoy that when there is 'nothing but silence or modern noise but I did enjoy that chicken clucking and potting. Thank you!
Laura, have you considered a hedge between the orchard and the grass path with a delightful wooden cottage gate, so when the children walk into the orchard with their "antique" baskets to gather fruit, they will have memories to last a lifetime. Particularly if Paul can include a gentle squeak for the gate !
'Huge' butternut harvest was an understatement! WOW And the smiling butternut trio is so FUN! I can't wait to see it.
Are you kidding me, the butternuts are giant and abundant!! What variety are they?
Love the idea of a rock wall to section off the fruit trees. Your gardens are so, so beautiful and peaceful! You and your videos are a blessing to all of us. 😊
Boy is Aaron going to have a lot of grass to mow!! Love your vision for your garden.

That little piece of land with pear, rosehip trees and grapes looking vines remind me of Chateaus surroundings in France. Wild and charming. Love stone wall idea as it gives weight to your expansive and open property like the one by the new brick path you showed yesterday which is so gorgeous. The children are so adorable and loved Samantha planting Russel with mulch lol...

Oh my gosh a Stacked wall in front of the orchard would be so beautiful!!! The flower shed is my favorite structure on your property. I love the orchard grass and your grass pathways too.
The immature butternut squash are fine to eat. You can cut them into rounds & bake or air fry with toppings. I've used pizza toppings, or mayonnaise or butter with bread crumbs or fried onions. The reason I experimented with immature butternut is because I had a volunteer vine come up in a compost pile, but I didn't know what it was. It was huge, grew 30 feet out into the back yard & into a neighboring vacant lot. When gorgeous pale green & cream-striped fruit appeared, I knew it was in the squash or gourd family. Got impatient, & harvested a couple of big ones because I thought perhaps would be like overly-large zucchini. Turned out they were good eating, but I realized they were butternut squash as the others left on the vine began to turn to golden tan. Plentiful harvest, shared with a neighbor.
Good morning Laura! Great butternut squash harvest!!!! ❤️❤️ the natural grass and the pathways. The garden is really going strong . Hugs from N.C..❤️

Good morning from Michigan!! You have an amazing set up there. I am SO jealous. I have never planted squash before and took a chance on it. I also planted two that I got from my garden center. I had no idea how it grew and planted it in my tiny garden. Let’s just say they completely took over. But I love it!! I had to string them through bushes and I have a ton that are just hanging out in the bushes. It’s kind of hilarious. I have about 15 with a bunch more that are still green. I’m not sure they will make before our first frost. But I am so grateful that put all the info you did about them in here. I was going to pull them after I harvested the ones that were ready. But I will definitely let them go and see what happens. Thank you. You have an amazing gift. 💚

I loved this video but since you’re working around the chicken coop. I’d love to see the chickens occasionally. I’m sure you’re probably used to them but it was delightful just hearing their sounds. Thank you for the joy you bring us everyday.
Congratulations on your spectacular butternut harvest! The "scratch marks" look more like splitting from too much water to me, as opposed to being caused by some external injury. It's especially obvious on the ones with the large splits, or mouths, as you appropriately called them. Also, you can still use the green squash; just cook it the way you would a summer squash. Or, you can give it to your chickens. ~ Lisa
