Hi. I start every morning with Laura and then head right to Aaron's father's sermons. His detailed teaching of the Bible, verse by verse, has saved my life! And he's so funny! I can't do a 1/5 of what Laura can in my own yard due to medical problems and disability, but I've been watching them since the beginning and love seeing their progress and changes they've made. And I highly encourage you to watch Pastor Paul, too! Be safe and take care!!

The hawk was likely a Coopers Hawk or Sharp-Shinned Hawk. Both of these acrobatic raptors are excellent at catching song birds. And are great pest control for rodents and managing populations of invasive House Sparrows and European Starlings. Such a cool experience. Good job! It means you’re creating a balanced ecosystem!

We occasionally have a Cooper’s hawk that will sit and camp the bird feeder. If I notice the birds aren’t out there for a bit I will usually see the hawk. Sometimes I’ll bring the feeder in just to break the cycle but those guys gotta eat too and it’s all about the balance in nature anyway. We love them all and it’s sure nice to have such great rodent control.

Laura, I may have shared this with you last time you harvested butternuts, but one of my favorite recipes with them is: roast a salted and olive oiled butternut, cut in half, on sheet pan face down with a little water until soft and caramelized. Use it to make quesadillas with caramelized onions, goat cheese and cilantro. It’s one of my favorite fall recipes. I cook quesadillas in olive oil with salt until tortilla is lightly browned and crisp. (You can sub goat cheese and cilantro if those aren’t to your liking) It was a Martha Stewart recipe. Congratulations on you beautiful harvest.

Laura, you are excited about your produce harvest this year. I am excited about your harvest! Thank you for taking us along to the new property. One of my favorite childhood memories is the story my mother told about my father and mother walking their new farm property line together and imagining what their lives would bring. Mother always repeated how amazed (and proud) she was that her husband could dig a hole by hand so large and deep when he was planting the cornerstone pole to mark the property line of their new homestead.

This is what I found: Heavy rain or over enthusiastic irrigation is the most common reason for butternut squash splitting. This extra water signals to the squash that it should grow more. The problem is, the outer shell has already hardened, so when the fruit grows, there isn't anywhere for it to go. It's like blowing a balloon up.

First, I think you should have a rock wall to separate the orchard to the grass pathways, of course will need entrances for mowing, but it will finish off the quaint cottage feel of the area. Make it more rustic. Second question (still watching video), can you grow butternut squash on a trellis? I learned so much from this video, thank you! How many of us use your videos over and over again for instructional purposes, my hand is raised! This one will be visited again for the butternut squash, my favorite squash. My favorite rose you have is the Zephrein (sp?) rose. After watching you murder the roses for a few years and they come back with a vengence I no longer have anxiety attacks when its prunning time for anything. lol

The immature butternut squash are fine to eat. You can cut them into rounds & bake or air fry with toppings. I've used pizza toppings, or mayonnaise or butter with bread crumbs or fried onions. The reason I experimented with immature butternut is because I had a volunteer vine come up in a compost pile, but I didn't know what it was. It was huge, grew 30 feet out into the back yard & into a neighboring vacant lot. When gorgeous pale green & cream-striped fruit appeared, I knew it was in the squash or gourd family. Got impatient, & harvested a couple of big ones because I thought perhaps would be like overly-large zucchini. Turned out they were good eating, but I realized they were butternut squash as the others left on the vine began to turn to golden tan. Plentiful harvest, shared with a neighbor.

I would say that there are lots of other fun things in that area. Go exploring and see all the great things you find. It was so peaceful when you were cleaning out the window boxes. Y’all live in a wonderful place. Hugs! 🥀🌿🍇🍑🍐💕

Good morning from Michigan!! You have an amazing set up there. I am SO jealous. I have never planted squash before and took a chance on it. I also planted two that I got from my garden center. I had no idea how it grew and planted it in my tiny garden. Let’s just say they completely took over. But I love it!! I had to string them through bushes and I have a ton that are just hanging out in the bushes. It’s kind of hilarious. I have about 15 with a bunch more that are still green. I’m not sure they will make before our first frost. But I am so grateful that put all the info you did about them in here. I was going to pull them after I harvested the ones that were ready. But I will definitely let them go and see what happens. Thank you. You have an amazing gift. 💚

Congratulations on your spectacular butternut harvest! The "scratch marks" look more like splitting from too much water to me, as opposed to being caused by some external injury. It's especially obvious on the ones with the large splits, or mouths, as you appropriately called them. Also, you can still use the green squash; just cook it the way you would a summer squash. Or, you can give it to your chickens. ~ Lisa

Only 2 plants of butternut squash-AMAZING! I hope you'll share how you like to eat it sometime! I love geraniums in the pantina terracotta pots. Martha Stewart says "one of the most natural-looking patinas can be achieved by simply slathering plain yogurt on a new pot." Great video thanks!
