    I’m the 1% then. Can’t remember how I found your channel - likely through homesteading somehow, as that’s all I watch. Just fascinated by bison and a small ranch operation doing it. We’ll never run bison in our Smokies, but love seeing those majestic creatures on screen.

    Hi Noah, great video of the Bison auction. Thanks for sharing your conversation with Dusty. Good to see the two of you helping and supporting each other as Bison herders. Some of the large male Bison must be very difficult and unpredictable to work with. It was great to see how the auctions work and get an idea of the dollars some of the best will go for.

    That was interesting information about the history of auctions. Our local university used to have auctions for surplus office or other equipment. Bidders would have to fill out a card with their contact info, the number of the item that they were bidding on and the amount that they wished to bid. Then they would put their card in a locked box with a slot on it. At the end of the auction, the person with the highest bid would be the winner.

    Noah I really enjoyed this video. I use to go to cattle auctions with my great aunt as a kid. Use to love to go and watch. You bring back memories for me. There always use to be mean cows or bulls. That one bison right before you met up with Dusty near the end. He was one feisty, mean bison. I would hate to see him in with yours or Dusty's herd. You are out and about with your bison. Dusty is in size by side amongst them. That one could be dangerous for you. Was nice to see Dusty there. Liked when you all went togther. Good video and thanks for it Noah. Take care.

    The auction has a good setup for the ringmen. I attended a Brahma cattle sale and they had a bull that almost went over the ring railing. It was almost half over the rail before it fell over backward. They hurriedly let it out to the back where it was jumping the gates like they were not there. The auctioneer said yeah we were afraid that might happen. It didn't bring much of a price they couldn't have paid me to take it home with me.

    Love your channel and I am surprisingly now very fond of bison, They are glorious things! I guess that I love that they are wild and no longer threatened with extinction. I see a parallel with South African friends who converted a large, failing cattle "ranch" where the cattle would succumb to things like leopards and tsetse fly, to a game farm to raise various wild animals for sale, specialising in raising rhinos for sale to National Parks where poaching was decimating the populations. Seeing you walking in a field next to a group of watchful "farmed" wild bison reminded me of approaching a water hole on foot to have a look at a new rhino calf after being warned to be very cautious quiet, careful, respectful of the grumpy, protective rhino mother who weighed 2,000 kg and was very fast, good hearing but poor eyesight so don't run, just be brave and stand still! Yeah right! Thankfully, after a display from hearing or smelling us, they chose to flee. A question, are bison territorial and content to stay where there is good food, water etc or do they prefer to roam, be nomadic and want to go, migrate with the seasons? Is it practical to have a bison herd on a larger open "conservation lifestyle, limited hunting" ranch range next to a National Park where elk and other wild animals roam? Cheers!

    If there are not “bad” traits in the gene pool than it is ok. A closed herd can spell trouble when there are issues that you don’t want in there because what a closed herd tends to do is magnify everything, good and bad. The Yellowstone animals do have some “bad” traits but as far as confirmation goes, then nice animals.

    The generally accepted first auction occurred in Babylon in 500 B.C.E. according to ancient Greek scribes. During this period, auctions were held annually, and women were sold on the condition of marriage.

    Would the frame of the animal be dependent on how harsh the weather elements are. Obviously the further North you go the colder the temperatures are. I would think with taller and wider frames that there would be more meat and fat to help keep them warm?

    Does it concern anyone at the NBA that breeding for animals to get to market weight faster will eventually produce animals with a shorter lifespan, as has been the case with turkeys, and other domestic livestock?

  • @BrokenArrowBison

    @BrokenArrowBison

    2 жыл бұрын

    No not at this stage. Bison used to be alot larger in history so breeding for size is actually a good thing at this stage. The lifespan of larger Bison is very long.

  • @TheBuffaloLady

    @TheBuffaloLady

    @@BrokenArrowBison Are they trying to breed back Bison Antiquus? It is believed that (if there is an ancestral relationship between Bison Bison and Bison Antiquus) that bison diminished in size thousands of years before European contact. Even in the Old Settler's day, however, people were killing wild bison that were believed by the Zoological Society to be over 50 years old. Compared to the 25 year lifespan of wild bison today, it's a bit jarring to think that in only 200 years the bison's lifespan has decreased to half.

  • @BrokenArrowBison

    @BrokenArrowBison

    2 жыл бұрын

    No not Bison antiquus. Bison only 150 years ago used to be larger. The few bison that remained that our bison are descendants of today are believed to have come from some of the smaller ones. Bison today actually live to be around 40 years old. Harsh environments in the wild can result in 25 years but most of the time they have a long lifespan now.

    You can have a 100k bull. If you are breeding to a 1k cow. The offspring isn't going to be top. When I raised fighting chickens. I figured the hen was 80% of what the offspring would become. The traits of then hen were most important. She might throw one calf. But she does that year after year. Met a guy that spent a fortune on his stud horse. But had grade horses. He never worked out of grade horses. He told me he wished he had spent more attention to his mare's attributes. And bought less of a stud.Because the foals took more of the mare's genetics.
