The whole episode was a metaphor for war. - Wuncler and the wealthy Chinese man are in an economic dispute and decide to settle it over the game - Wuncler uses propaganda tactics to manipulate Huey and the others to play for him (recruitment) - Child soldiers and mercenaries are referenced - Huey shows signs of dehumanization and becomes savage towards the other team - Eventually both sides simply begin breaking the rules (war crimes) - At the end of the episode, Wuncler neglects to help his team tend to their injuries, representing wounded veterans being ignored by the government.

HBO never took ownership of the show from Adult Swim. The show was/is produced by Sony for WarnerMedia, the media company that owns both HBO and Adult Swim. Aaron can’t meet his deadlines and also got rid of the team behind the show right after Season 3.
