The mayor said he wanted the entire school board to resign or else they would be charged. If it is that serious, resigning wouldn't prevent anyone from being charged. The Board didn't distribute "child porn" nor did any teacher. When most people hear the term "child porn", they assume it is referring to photographic images of children, which is a serious crime. The mayor wants you to think those board members distributed images of children so the community will physically take part in ridding the school board of anyone who isn't a right-wing extremist. If these people were really distributing child porn would they really be given the opportunity to resign? And, if a judge told the mayor they could be prosecuted for violating any law, wouldn't a prosecutor from the District Attorney's office be doing just that? If they refused to resign, no one will be prosecuting them and the mayor knows it, otherwise he wouldn't have requested that they all resign. There is the truth, and then there is the way this story is being told.

None of the prompts in question were ever assigned, and it had been in use for more than 5 years. These were 17 and 18 year old students. This was nothing more than political theatre for the mayor who had aspirations on higher office. Fortunately he's too ignorant to be taken seriously. Also, the mayor had absolutely no authority to make a statement because according to the Hudson charter, the city council is the head of local government. The mayor's office is ceremonial. The amount of ignorance concerning this incident, as well as the lack of understanding basic civics is truly astounding. The "mayor" actually resigned after this happened due to his assertion that ice fishing could lead to prostitution. I'm not making that up either.

They were right to not resign. A few items out of 624 items were inappropriate. That means someone likely didn't read the book. That person messed-up, but given the title and lots of the other items, it's clearly a mistake. There's no villain here. And, by the way, based on the items I read in the press, I don't agree with the judge that they were pornographic. The correct way to put it is that the items encouraged students to write pornography. That's still inappropriate, but not the same thing as the book being pornography. There's no reason for even that person who got the book to resign. They should learn to read the full book. There's absolutely no reason for anyone else to resign, and if that was pushed, the case would be thrown out of court. There's no legal reason for them to step down even if they read the book. And, they didn't resign, and weren't prosecuted, because this was just political posturing by the mayor. There's no crime here. That would be a reason for the public to get one person removed from the board. A prosecution wouldn't likely stand up in court. The book was removed. That's the right solution. Going after everyone on a school board because of one book is beyond ridiculous. Even if the book was the worst pornography imaginable, only the people involved in giving that to students should then be prosecuted. I can pretty much guarantee that not everyone on the board reads every book for every subject. That's not how it works. The people who want to protect children from bad books are correct to want to do that. The people who are out-to-get school boards are irrational.

People posting nonsense about judges and child pornography and the Mayor even having authority to bring charges. Facts are this: Summit county prosecutor and the Police chief in Hudson have stated no charges will be filed. Under Ohio law this does not meet the legal threshold of what is considered child pornography. Those are the facts, and not my opinions. Funny thing is, no one has bothered to ask if I had an opinion. They made an assumption, just as you have. The only thing I have done is state the facts, however unpalatable you may find them. I have been attacked repeatedly for stating facts that everyone could find themselves if they bothered to look for them. If you've an axe to grind then it should be with the legislature. You know, the ones that codify the laws. Then maybe the ones that interpret the law and decide whether laws have been broken and what charges are filed. i.e the prosecutor. Are you getting it yet? The best thing about the pandemic is that it brought our schools into our homes so parents were able to see and hear firsthand what goes on. One of the writing prompts was “ describe the first time you failed to have an orgasm when you wanted to” Imagine if an adult asked your child that question? How would it not be criminal? Imagine the teacher that would want to read any of those papers written by their students? How can parents trust those writing prompts were never assigned ? Especially when say to write about things the student would never talk about with their parents.

The arrogance of these board members is astounding, but not surprising. Also, the news story conveniently left out the part when the mayor stated that he had consulted a judge.

Did the school board know this was in the classroom? Usually, at least in schools I’ve worked in, material must be approved by the school board first. I was trying to find out why everyone was so upset. The lady reading those questions cleared that up real quick. I understand that those questions weren't assigned. However, handing a book with those questions out to students was dubious. Seeing how upset everyone was should have made these board members think.

They won't be stepping down, but the parents will be voting them out the next time they're up for re-election you can guarantee that!

Usually school board vacancies are filled on those off year elections at the municipal or county level. It’s important to vote, even in the small elections where it’s a few school board seats and a small tax levy. Also, these people usually run unopposed.

There's no reason for even that person who got the book to resign. They should learn to read the full book. There's absolutely no reason for anyone else to resign, and if that was pushed, the case would be thrown out of court. There's no legal reason for them to step down even if they read the book. And, they didn't resign, and weren't prosecuted, because this was just political posturing by the mayor. There's no crime here. That would be a reason for the public to get one person removed from the board. A prosecution wouldn't likely stand up in court. The book was removed. That's the right solution. Going after everyone on a school board because of one book is beyond ridiculous. Even if the book was the worst pornography imaginable, only the people involved in giving that to students should then be prosecuted. I can pretty much guarantee that not everyone on the board reads every book for every subject. That's not how it works. The people who want to protect children from bad books are correct to want to do that. The people who are out-to-get school boards are irrational.

@@technowey Most statutes for pornography refer to PRURIENT material. Asking kids to write x rated themed papers? WTF. Stop making excuses. It's usually well spelled out in local statutes. DO you think if he said he wanted a new writing book in class rooms, it would have made the news? The mayor exposed what is widespread, and the news brought it to the worlds attention. It’s a mistake, but not necessarily an evil mistake, and so the hate directed at the teachers is inappropriate. And, no, those sentences you consider prurient are *not* pornographic. The sentences are soliciting pornography, but the sentences themselves are *not* pornographic.

If this literature being assigned to school children isn’t pornography, what is? No matter what, all adults know it is filth as does that school board. Parents take back your children get rid of those school board members. But we citizen need to take responsibility. We have become to busy to take the responsibility that comes with having children and thus given it to people with low moral values. We have let our government runs us instead of us being their leaders. Vulgarity and profanity is the commonly acceptable speech. Hope we haven’t reached the no turning back point.

You gave the key phrase as to why there will be no charges. "Literature". If a person goes to a public library and ask for Hustler magazine the librarian is required to make a real attempt to locate and give it to whoever asks. The line between literature and porn is real blurry.

@@4793bigdaddy i am all in favour of freedom of choice - and everyone freely negotiating their own choices amongst each other.. so i would have thought that the sensible way to resolve this would be in that way.. all pupils with parents with these old fashioned values doing the course but without the literature or advice that they object to.. while pupils with more liberal parents who live in the real world allowed access to the full spectrum of literature.. and if any parents are still not comfortable with their young adult kids being treated like young adults to any degree - they can take them out of this class all-together and enrol them in another.. threatening criminal charges - strikes me as totally the opposite to any sensible adult way of respecting everyones freedom..

I hope that the parents put together a class action law suit against the school board and the publisher and author As well as the mayor starting a law suit against the school board.

OMG, this is sick. Everytime I hear stories like this, it makes me feel so grateful that I have an amazing husband who works is azz off so I can be a stay at home mother and home school our kids. I am also grateful to have been born in Oklahoma, because the OSBE ( Oklahoma state board of education) gives us a framework guidelines, but I have full control over thier curriculum and how I teach them. We use textbooks and work books only, no online courses. This is horrible, what was the arguments used to decide that this book, assignments were appropriate for students. Wow, I really don't know what to say, but I am glade parents are paying attention and involved in what thier kids are being taught, and spoke up during these meetings and bravo to the mayor to publicly inform everyone actions will be taken against those sick folks who are responsible.

These parents signed a waiver for their kids to attend this college level course. If they were really involved they would have known what the curriculum was before their child started. This is a college level course, will these parents be at the colleges too protecting their adult children from sex? No. They want the clout of having a college level teen bit apparently they are too dumb to understand what that means.

And I guess since teenagers are taking advanced classes (which may impress you) that makes them legally older so the statutes protecting minors shouldnt apply. I defer to your brilliance. Big difference between giving consent when "may come in contact with mature content", and asking a kid (if they are in school and especially under 18, they are kids) to write about themselves having sex, is pornography and a disgusting thought to think teachers have been reading it. Teens get expelled from school for discussing sex. The teacher should have been included and charges need to be filed. That school board believes they are above the mayor and judge!!! Fire them and press charges and include the teacher.

Thank God for a mayor with outstanding morals. Citizens need to stand with him and reelect him also! You might save your children from Hell.

It's the jury's duty to decide if a crime is committed. "Not what people were expecting!!!" good grief!

The Summit county prosecutor as well as the police chief of Hudson have publicly stated no charges will be filed. It was a fictional writing class. Do you understand? Finally someone standing up for our kids. Teach them what schools are supposed to teach not brain washing them for your agenda.

The school sign says "It's takes a second" whoever wrote that needs to be fired too lol.

I retired from teaching high school in 2016. When I was teaching, we were not allowed to show R rated movies unless we had all parents of students in the class sign a permission slip. Of course showing something X-rated was unthinkable. The news report says parents had to sign permission for their students to be in what was essentially a college class, and were notified that the book had “mature content.” But by the looks of the book, teachers could have easily removed the inappropriate pages, some of which seems to be pornographic in content, and they should have. The problem areas were not essential and the course could have been modified to be appropriate for under age 18 students. So why didn’t they? We hear more and more stories of teachers and admins bypassing parent-input, when laws still require parents to be responsible for the physical and emotional well-being of their children. I hope more and more parents speak out. This school board was pretty cheeky to respond to the mayor like they did.

a) they didn't say not to tell their parents, they said to write something they wouldn't want to tell their parents, which is something kids do all the time anyway. b) Writing about sex isn't automatically bad and it's only pornography to the people who are writing it as far as i can tell, not illegal, and not immoral. This seems to be a bunch of nonsense.

From the UK. I'm absolutely disgusted and outraged. I cannot comprehend why this book would be present in any sane curriculum. The Western world has a big problem. Leave no stone unturned finding out how big.

A handful of parents at a school board meeting is HUGE. There usually isn't anyone there.
