Comparison of the Huawei P30 vs the one-year-old P20 Pro, judging them together on performance, battery tech, camera abilities, specs, software and everything else that matters.
I've had a lot of requests for a full comparison between the fresh new P30 (Huawei's first big 2019 launch) and last year's flagship, the P20 Pro, as they're now a similar cost here in the UK. So here's a run-through of these Huawei handsets side-by-side, to see which one might be best for you.
The P20 Pro first introduced that great tri-lens camera setup, although the ultra-wide-angle lens found on the P30 is missing in action (replaced with a monochrome shooter). Still, the P20 Pro serves up crisp, gorgeous photos - especially with the Portrait and Night mode - while both Huawei phones can record 4K video.
The new Huawei P30 Pro sports a speedier Kirin 980 chipset, compared with the Kirin 970 of yesteryear. Performance is still good on the Pro, although it's showing signs of ageing - and likewise, the Android and EMUI software is still stuck on last year's version.
We also prefer the more compact design of Huawei's new flagship, even if the battery tech has shrunk.

Watching this on my P20 Pro. One thing I really appreciate about this handset is the notification led light tho. Not many new flagships have it these days.

Got my first Huawei phone last year after a move from Samsung and I love my p20 pro. Great battery, great camera and already on android 9.1. The gallery app is poor though but plenty of better alternatives out there. I won't be upgrading yet I can't see the point

Used to own a P20 pro for a year, now a P30 for 2 years, going to swap for older S10 for the jack/stereo combo and small size. When it comes to speakers, the P20, tho a bit quieter, beats the P30. Other than that, the P30 beats the P20 pro in every aspect - has a jack, is lighter, thinner, has clearer speaker, better design, better screen colors, goes dimmer at night, battery tho 3650mAh, lasts longer. P30 is the better phone. And since new phones don't offer jack/stereo combo with OLED and sub 6.2 inch size, I'm going for the S10 cause the S21/22 and iPhone 12/13 are too expensive

Hi, just a correction. I've got my P20 pro in March and I've looked for System updates straight out of box and it did update to 9 right away for both Android and EMUI
@Tech Spurt I don't know why your P20 Pro is still on old software. Mine got Emui 9.0 in early January. Maybe it's a mobile carrier thing.

Great comparison as always. Have you tried charging a P30 with the charger that comes with the P30 pro(40 watt) to check if it actually charges faster that way?

Its not possible The phone determines how much power it can input even thought The charger is 40w it will only take 22.5w from it

Ive got p30 pro and at night i was recordng a 1080p 60fps video but it was blurry as hell. You have tue same? I tried before during the day between forest driving around and it was perfect. In house when looked down it was blurry but less than at night. LOL, do you think it will be fixed? And 4k60 fps will be added or lag will be reduced?

When I got the p20 pro I knew they weren't going to kill it with the next upgrade, so a good 2 year phone! if you didn't do that then obviously get the p30 now!

No, it doesn't have anymore the notification LED. Neither the p30 pro. I just got used to it so much on my P20 Pro so this is one reason why I don't switch to P30. Also the lack of stereo speakers and IR sensor. Also the fingerprint reader is way faster on my P20 Pro.

@@mee1123 but now you can get a free huawei smart watch that can notify you of you have a call or text even WhatsApp I use my Huawei GT smart watch to let me know when I have a call or message as my phone is on silent most of the time. I sent my p20 pro back only had it less than 3 months it wasn't getting security updates last one it November 2018 so complained to network operator who I had the contract with and they sent me at no extra cost the p30 and GT watch.

@@bogdandinu503 That is the reason why i hate the new phones. This in screen fingerprint sensor is a shame. The old fingerprint sensor works perfect. The new one is a pain in the ass. S10, Mi9, P30 PRO. No one works like the old one.

Does the Huawei P20 Pro destroy the P30 Pro for Monochrome, I know the P30 Pro has a Monochrome camera bit in it but thd P20 Pro has a dedicated Monochrome Sensor, is there a big difference for out of camera results or not, i only shoot monochrome.
Bought a P20 Pro after losing my phone on vacation. Best money spent on a phone. You should have Emui 9 by now, the same day I put my sim card in the update became available. Been rockin with it for a month now won't go back.

I played with both. I was going on holiday. Got the p20 pro. Better battery, fingerprint scanner way faster. Stereo sound. Love the p30 tho.got this cheaper too.older i know

Quick question: I heard that 7nm CPU uses 30% less power than 10nm CPU Wouldn't that mean the P30 actually have similar battery life than P20 Pro?

you are absolutly correct, the P30 does better in terms of battery life ^^
Just got a P20 Pro just a week ago or so, and it has indeed updated to Pie 9.0. It might have something to do with not having a SIM card slotted in as to why you maybe didn't see the update.
Watching the video on my P9 lite 😂😂😂 still rocking. Huawei mobile phones are beasts.
My P20 normal is on android 9, did you check for updates?

I have been using p 20 pro since been realesed. Only issue had phone been frozen down when I used Bluetooth. And this year looks like the antenna been giving up. But it's a best phone I bought yet. Thinking to buy p 30 pro even it's 2024 now

@@Andy__L this was way back before. I have a regular p30 now as well. Sorta wanted the mate 20 pro because it's cheaper and the hardware wasn't that bad. But I ended up with the p30

You should have compared the difference of how they feel in the hand and there weight. They have different aspect ratios the p30 is narrower and easier to use one hand and it weights 15g lighter. Weight is very important to me, didn't matter how powert a phone is or good it's camera is ect, I don't want to be weighed down carrying a +200g brick in my pocket.

Everyone praises Huawei's camera performance. Then again, recently I bough my mom P20 Pro and I took it on a biking trip to do a quick camera performance check. The other device was my Galaxy Note 4 (yes, 4) and I have to say I found the P20 Pro somewhat dissappointing. Sure, there was nothing wrong with the photos, but in good lighting conditions, the pictures taken with Note 4 retained more detail and more natural colors. Obviously in difficult lighting P20 Pro will come victorious, but otherwise it was quite a let down.

The stabilization on the p30 is better even without OIS? Have you compared 1080 videos on both of them? I think the p20 pro would win that. And does the p30 still over expose like the p20 pro?

I tested both and think that the p30 is way better
I can't help looking at the title and then the video. If you are going to have the P30 first in the title then, as people read from left to right, the P30 should be on the left, because they look left to right. Otherwise a really great informative video for someone considering purchasing Huawei for the first time.
The trick if you're comparing screens, look at the blacks in between the cookies.
