HTTYD The Hidden World - A Failure to Inspire

Фильм және анимация

AKA: The Hidden World is Trash and Here's Why
HTTYD:THW, a fascinating and baffling piece of cinema that completely failed on every meaningful level it could apart from it’s visuals. An absolutely beautiful to look at piece of art, that betrays every moral and character and piece of worldbuilding that was established over two movies and dozens of episodes of television and special features. How did it come to be this way and why? And what could it have been instead if the job of making this film was done correctly from the start? Join me to find out as I highlight the movies many many flaws and how they could have been avoided, and give my take on how the ending of the HTTYD franchise should have gone.

@@davidcristiantache118 But they didn't HAVE to do that, since they didn't show any care for accuracy to the books anywhere else outside of the names of some characters and places, thus leading to the series following a completely different plot and having completely different themes which don't work well with the conclusion of the books. If they wanted to, they could have tied in with the books in a different way which would actually make more sense with the series, like making it that the Hiccup in the movies is the first person in viking history to ride a dragon, similar to the mentioned character Hiccup the First in the books (and that's not even where the parallels end, since Hiccup the First infamously loses the Hooligan tribe their land and they have to move the tribe to Berk, similar to how in httyd3 they have to move Berk because of Hiccup's choices as a Chief). Like I honestly don't know why they didn't go that route, it makes sense thematically and while I know Dean DeBlois didn't want to do a 4th film, it would have given Dreamworks the opportunity to keep coming up with ideas, perhaps even eventually doing a book-accurate adaptation in the film universe, and keep making money off of the series lol, which is obviously very alluring for studios, especially ones like Dreamworks which has to compete against Disney and Pixar.

The ending you came up with made me so emotional. When i first watched HTTYD 3 in theaters i balled my eyes out at the ending. Not because it was good, but because it tucked so hard at my heart strings it hurt. The dragons weren't supposed to leave, that's what they fought for in the second movie. Draco killed Stoick, what did grimmel do? Basically nothing but threats. It's dumb, it's frustrating, but worst of all the light fury should've been a night fury. Grimmel cannot kill an entire species alone, even if it's rare i refuse to believe it. If they so desperately wanted to introduce a light fury they should've given her more time to shine. let us have a look at her home, her family, who she really is. but they didn't, so in turn she seems manipulative, toxic, and controlling. it's weird. i don't really count it as canon tbh. it was horrible, and i can only desperately hold unto hope that one day we'll get a fourth movie that attempts to completely rewrite the third. (they did it with Shrek, they can do it for HTTYD)

And Drago is still out there! I expected some big showdown at the end of tne series since he and the Bewilderbeast had matching lost parts (horn and arm). They became like a Hiccup and Toothless pair with losing something. Why finish that up when you can move onto a Viggo wannabe who did not even come CLOSE to the levels of threatening any of the villains before Jim have. Heck, I'd have enjoyed a showdown with Krogan more if he somehow escaped Drago and had his Dragon Fliers ready to attack Berk out of revenge

You are far from the only person who had a problem with Berk. It literally gave me a headache to watch that scene. MY BRAIN COULDN'T PROCESS ALL THE COLORS. Just *camera pans*...blinded. It almost makes me think that's how the travesties afterwards slipped under so many peoples' radars. They were spending that time recovering from the marlinspike being jammed into our eye sockets. And Grimmel just BAFFLES me. Like, you decided to skim over his plan, but I cannot keep silent! He claims that Night Furies can't fly for long distances, despite being as perfectly designed for flight as a 6-limbed creature can be. He also says they can't stand the cold, WHEN TOOTHLESS TANKED THE BEWILDERBEAST'S BLIZZARD BREATH! AND I'M SUPPOSED TO BELIEVE THIS INCOMPETENT KILLED ALL THE NIGHT FURIES? It's more likely the entire species has been engaged in a 20-year episode of Candid Camera and this guy was the idiot who didn't realize they were filming! Grimmel? More like Dribble. F***, Viggo Grimborn from Race to the Edge was what Grimmel should have been: Intelligent, patient, focused, strategic, with a long line of Hunters that recorded their practices in his ancestry and revolutionary technology that he designed to track down and kill Night Furies. And here's a strange detail: Used to be, a lot of Toothless' expressions came from the variation in his pupil sizes. Slits when enraged or hypnotized, huge and round when excited or high on dragon nip, etc. But in #3, they never change. They're always these weird vertical rectangles. Toothless is more like a mechanical bull than a living being in this movie.

I’m still rolling over how they dumbed the characters down so much. I watched a helluva lot more of the Race to the Edge series set between the movies, but it was wonderful. It also showed stuff like even thought Snotlout was still, well, a snot head, he had a whole episode featuring him trying to shape up (It went well. One of my favorite). And even though he was flirting from time to time, he wasn’t flirting with his aunt. The twins. Yeah, they’re crazy as heck, but they weren’t idiots. Fishlegs... I’m going to be honest that I didn’t pay that much attention to the character, which is sad, but I only skim watched the movie. Astrid and Hiccup weren’t saved from this, either. I originally hated the movie because they sent away the dragons, and then through google, I found a hundred more faults that I agree with.

Like you don’t send away something you love because of 1 villain, Do you even see that they had a lot of human AND dragon villains and they never gave up or threw away a lifetime of fun and adventure until now, and it’s giving a bad message to young people that rewatch this when they are older, and the message it’s shown is like this “Ah yes, I shall let my dog and cat (if you have a pet) go back to the wild because that’s where it belongs and not as a pet anymore and I’ll hopefully see them in 50 years or less and let them live their own life like we do” like I know what the example I just shown was some people might call it dumb but you get my point, Hiccup and Toothless just threw away a lifetime of fun and adventures to STILL explore, and if dragons wanted to go back and forth with New Berk and the Hidden World they could, they didn’t have to force them into it, and the Light Fury was acting like a dirt bag and looks like she wants Toothless to be only hers like as if Toothless couldn’t have any other friends but HER. INDEED. if there was EVER proof that Dean stopped thinking of Toothless as an actual character and thought of him only as a plot point or pet in this movie, it's the fact that he was passed out for when Hiccup sacrifices himself. I mean, really, what is the thing Toothless care MOST about in the world? Protecting Hiccup. What would be his greatest possible moment of torment and drama, knowing Hiccup is going to die and that there is NOTHING he can do to stop it. Why on EARTH would you write it so that you DO NOT include that dramatic moment???? Oh yeah, cause you want to make it seem that Toothless and Hiccup separating is no big deal to them because they've "Grown" and "Don't Need each other anymore" and "Aren't unhealthily obsessed with each other anymore". *headdesk* So for the sake of crowbarring the separation in, you sacrificed good drama and storytelling. Yup. Not a bad decision at allllll.

Also, about the dragons disappearing, "leaving not a bone nor a fang for man to remember them by", how tf did they do that? Did all the dragons in the world go and destroy every dead dragon they could find before leaving to the Hidden world? What?? Edit after rewatching this video: - Toothless supposedly forgetting about Hiccup after they saw each other for the last time at the end of the movie is not only bs, it's also one of the many big "fvck yous" to the fan base. As somebody who basically grew up with the franchise it hurts to see how they truly ruined everything except the scenery in this movie. - I'm pretty sure Grimmel was bluffing when he said he killed all Night Furies except Toothless, including his so-called first kill because of the reasons you quickly named on screen. If he's so proud of driving a dragon species to near-extinction he'd wear their skin and teeth for trophies (and it would have gotten the point across in the audience; like oh SHIT he IS the Night Fury killer!), like we used to think of Drago in the second movie due to the black scaly cloak he was wearing.

What upset me the most about the movies ending is twofold. The first is the message that; as soon as your friend gets a romantic interest they’re no longer going to be your friend and will abandon you. Which is a very hard adult lesson, not always true, but common enough. And two; without that friend by your side the world becomes infinitely smaller and what you do have becomes so limited that you go down the same path they did. Get married, have children, don’t go anywhere. I don’t care who you are that is bleak. Sure having kids can be an adventure, but when you live in a world with literal dragons?! Also, they would be foolish to think all the dragons now live in the hidden world, what about all the other dragons they now cannot ever reach or help because they don’t have their own? The world is now impossibly smaller without flight. And now that the Riders of Berk no longer exist there is no longer a threat if somebody just wants to go out and slaughter dragons.

I loved this video and your alternate ending, the thought alone that we might have gotten this instead of the pile of garbage we actually got almost made me tear up. I hate THW with a passion for all the reasons you named and I don't get how half of the fandom is satisfied with that movie. Like- were the pretty graphics all that they ever cared about? Did the message and the characters not matter to them at all? Or do fans of THW pretend that it's a good movie because acknowledging the fact that this load of well animated bull crap is the conclusion to this amazing franchise is just too painful? Aside from destroying the message of the first 2 movies I also hated that the movie made me dislike all of the characters I used to love (except for Astrid, she had no development but at least she stayed the badass, competent warrior she always has been). Ruff, Tuff and Snotlaut have been reduced to flat comedic relief that was tiring and not funny at all or also being a plot device in the case of Ruffnut. Hiccup, who's supposed to be smart and determined was as dumb as a rock and gave up on all his ideals for plot convenience. And then there's Toothless. I really, really didn't like Toothless in that movie, he's been reduced to a slobbery, hormonal puppy that thinks with his d*ck rather than his brain or heart. I'm supposed to love him but instead I was nothing but disappointed. The entire movie was unconvincing and everything happened not because the characters would act that way or it was the logical conclusion to the events that are happening but because the plot required it so that they could end the movie with "tHerE wHEre drAgONs WhEn i wAs A boY" F*CK THAT LINE!!! WHY WOULD ANYONE THINK THIS IS A GOOD IDEA?! Yeah from now on I'll be pretending that your ending is the ending that we got and that all the scenes that I hated(which is basically the whole movie) happened in a way that doesn't ruin the characters. I am so passionate about this because I LOVE the franchise and that's why it's so hard for me to come to terms with this giant disappointment being the cannon conclusion to one of my favorite franchises ever.

Since you brought up the fact Berk was overcrowded with dragons, for some reason the movie thinks the Hidden World wouldn't be? Like, even IF it's somehow possible to locate every dragon in the world, how would the Hidden World's ecosystem possibly be capable of handling that many dragons when even a village like Berk was overflooded with dragons alone? Also, the movie heavily pins humans as the reason why dragons can't stay, yet the FIRST movie's villian was a dragon itself! What if another Red Death were to ever be born in the Hidden World, are all dragons now fucked because they're all in one location now? Toothless ordering all the dragons to be captured because his piece of light fury tail was in danger is yet another reason why he's not fit to "rule" the Hidden World, Toothless as Alpha gives up his entire dragon pack to save one Light Fury he's known for like, a few days? And you're telling me he's fit to rule EVERY dragon after? Stoick was a better leader in the first movie when he was willing to set his own son aside to hunt the dragon nest, (even though he was over his head) ased on knowledge he knew about the dragons previously. The movie makes a passing mention of Gift of the Nightfury with Toothless giving up his independant flight, but it comes across more like, "we noticed this plothole, so we're retconning it instead of even bothering showing Toothless over the course of the movie want to be with the Light Fury more." That retcon is an important message because Toothless, after a whole movie of wanting to get his dick wet and leave Hiccup for SOME reason is suddenly sad to leave Hiccup at the end?? He's literally spent almost the whole film time trying to get away from him. And I absolutely HATE the notion at the stinger where they meet up at the end and it's implied Toothless "forgot" Hiccup. Not only is this beyond idiotic for obvious reasons, it's not even true for REAL LIFE WILD ANIMALS, where there are cases of even big cats remembering people years later, and who better to show that than fucking Toothless & Hiccup?

Despite saying that I did enjoy the movie, I never truly connected with it and, thanks to your video, I finally know why the Hidden Worlds bothered me so much. Your points, specially about tothless and Hiccups's friendship, really nailed down what was odd and downright wrong about this movie and just the ending in general. It's completely out of character for Toothless to just- leave Hiccup because of "pwetty spawwkle dwagon lady uwu". And not only that, but for ALL DRAGONS TO LEAVE- Jesus fucking christ no wonder deep down I felt so fucking depressed after watching this movie. I love dragons, even not being a little kid anymore, because let's be honest, Dragons are bloody awesome! And to see the humans giving up on them, simply because of another villain they fought, when they dealt with worse things before (side glances at the fucking Bewilderbeast), was the fucking line for me because this series was the only time I could feel a deeper connection to dragons, even if they weren't here in our real world. Your ending just resonates with the principles of the series a hundred times over and I'm so fucking glad I watched this video. And honestly? Glittery, perfect. It's so terrible. I love the old design and peoples new redesigns. 2. Toothless is now THE MOST shit dragon in the series. Fuck how much times Hookfang didn't give a shit if Snotlout was about to die. Hiccup gave Toothless LIFE. A PURPOSE. Without Hiccup, Toothless would be dead. Yet he picks a dragon that he only knew for I don't know A WEEK? 3. The ending. THE. ENDING. I really would want a HTTYD 4. But yet, we can't.. BECAUSE OF FUCKING TOOTHLESS AND THE LIGHT FURY. HEAR, HEAR! My experience watching the movie consisted of asking about 6 questions every scene: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How!?! Constantly. I can barely enjoy Toothless' absolute fail to Fury, because the Light Fury (I like to call her Day Lily when I'm feeling really sarcastic about the sparkly bratwurst princess) looks so confused and distressed. And I get so distressed thinking about Toothless/Day Lily's little orca babies, because I don't understand how they could survive in the wild without human protection because they can't hide against the stars like their papa and can't hide against the clouds like mama and the camo thing is fairly short-lived and they only seem to disappear because they're so dang fast they can get out of view before it fades AND HOW DOES TOOTHLESS' TAIL FIN NEVER BREAK DOWN?!?!?!??!?!??!?!?!??!?!??!?!??! All the romance is so clunky and awkward and Snoutlout is Hiccup's cousin in the books and this fact is often used in the movie series fanfictions, and I watched the movies first but I adopted the idea that the two were cousins even though nothing is ever said for the movieverse, so Snoutlout's flirting with Valka made me wanna legit hurl. If they really wanted to do a separation theme, it should've been from the angle of 'growing up and growing apart', which is a thing that does happen because Hiccup has responsibilities as Berk's Chief (which he barely does) and Toothless should've needed an independent means of flight because he's the Dragon Alpha (which THW totally forgot about I'm pretty sure). (Like HTTYD2, one of Hiccup's hangups over inheriting Berk's throne was because he wouldn't have time to explore or fly with Toothless.) Also, the Hidden World was never in any real danger in the movie and gave you no reason to actually care about it or propose why the Hidden World nest needed Toothless and Toothless legit ABANDONED the flock he was supposed to be already leading! Berk's move should've been about resources, not because they're being threatened. It'd have made Berk feel more in actual danger. They're leaving their home, because they can't make ends meet there anymore, so they don't have much when they start getting hunted down. Even if they built onto their original rest of the island, they look like they've got about 5-7 flocks worth of dragons. No need for a mystical hidden world angle, Berk and her dragons just need a bigger home with resources plentiful for all. They could've had historical references of how far real world Vikings managed to travel instead of out-and-out mythological nonsense. It should've ended with Berk setting up a dragon preserve on their big new CONTINENT. Only the dragons most attached to their humans would stay in New Berk. Hiccup and Toothless have responsibilities, but hang out two/three times of a month and Hiccup pulls out the old tailfin and saddle to take a long flight and they are the best of neighbors! Berk keeps the dragons safe from humans who don't understand them and educate people and the dragons help defend Berk when outsiders are just too scared and hateful to be willing to learn. (I'm sorry I ranted, but it's such a relief to find more people in this very lonely 'HTTYD:THW is Awful' corner.)

As an additional change, one could set the film further down the timeline and have Hiccup already be a father. Toothless gets along well enough with Hiccup's kids, but envies Hiccup's chance at fatherhood, wanting to have an offspring of his own. Then, instead of a pallet-swapped mate, Toothless finds an infant Night Fury, adopting it as his own child. That way, Toothless has a motivation that isn't "I'm horny and lonesome". This and Hiccup raising his own children would alter the theme of the movie into a passing of the torch, and the sincere desire to leave a better world behind for your children. It also would be interesting to see Hiccup living through things from Stoick's perspective, maybe giving Hiccup insight into why his father was the way he was, even if Hiccup doesn't necessarily agree. It would make for a much more introspective, dare I say much better film.

We are the voice of peace, and, bit by bit, we will change this world. You see, we have something they don't. Oh, sure, they have armies, and they have armadas, but we...have our dragons." I can agree that it may be better to stop at three before diminishing quality sets in. It just sucks how many plot holes the third movie had. It felt like a fanfic. Like, what is to keep dragon hunters from discovering the Hidden World where all the dragons are grouped into one easy hunting party? 3 жыл бұрын

Thank you! :D they did handle this movie like such hot garbage and I can poke way too many holes way too easily. I think I got a step closer to understanding the folks who like this movie recently. There's three main types I think: Folks who liked the franchise before this movie not for it's morals and stuff, but for it's other aspects like visuals and score and shipping and all the other stuff. So when this one came around with even better visuals, and a 180 theme that they'd rather connect with because it's "mature" or "realistic" or "grown up" or whatever you wanna call cynicism, they lap it up. Like there's an interview I heard once about Zach Snyder liking superheroes but never really connecting with them until he read Watchmen, which is a superhero comic book all about superheroes being failures, dark, violent, and bad for the world. Second group is folks who loved the series and simply can't bear the idea that the series went bad, so they are deluding themselves and, like the religious, ignoring anything bad/counter to the idea that it's good in order to perpetuate the idea that it's good, and glombing onto the stuff that is legit good like the emotional beats and the visuals I mentioned in "Say Something Nice". Third group, folks who simply value emotional resonance over actual storytelling. These are the folks who I like to think are the ones that kept Transformers a popular series. They simply don't care about plotholes or messages or what something means to a series. They go, went "dawwwww cute night lights, cute light furty! Look! Toothless is a big puppy dog playing fetch! Ooooo such pretty sky, sand, and water! Ohhhh so saddd the dragons have to go awayyyy!" and don't really think or care about the why's of things, just that a thing happened and how it feels.

It's okay he found a female, fine, but even forgetting your best friend... That's not the Toothless we love. I missed he and Hiccup flying together, missed their complicity, their mutual help, their bond THE CORE OF THE MOVIES but nope, all overshadowed. But the thing that bothers me most of all is that in the initial script there were other Night Furies! This was a topic of the first two movies, but nope! Discarded in favor of the Light Fury, which would have been even prettier if it had a better design and a well-defined personality! (and just to say, Hiccup finds a new specie and does not pass the idea of studying it and knowing everything about that dragon? here Hic was clearly out of character) The ending tho.. the ending of the books did not also go to the movies: the books had taken one direction and the films another! Apparently to make your movie more "memorable', you have to separate the main characters and give a sad or bittersweet ending... it doesn't always work that way! Did the writers want to make the dragons go anyway? Fine, but don't rely on a book phrase. And I have to say, your ending is splendid and so heartwarming! I don't know what I would do to see it realized!! In the end, despite everything, I can not hate this film at all or even deny it... I've waited with all my soul this movie and after so many years seeing all the characters back in action was and is a strange feeling, at least for me. It will remain a nice film but not at the levels of first two for sure.

THANK FRICKEN YOU. Honestly, I couldn't have said any of that better myself. I hATE this movie, HATE it so much because of all the backward and wrong characters and arcs. It infuriated me in theaters to see Toothless reduced to an animal, all of them to animals, when we KNOW they're more than that. I have a personal nitpick and soft spot for Snotlout because he had the most potential for character growth. He was so flawed and they could have done something with that but instead, they made him weird and creepy and he wasn't the only character wronged. Hiccup and Toothless for reasons you've already stated, these really are NOT the same characters. Though I have to mention I wasn't actually inspired by Astrids' speech to Hiccup that was supposed to motivate him? All she does is point out how screwed they are and how Toothless made Hiccup bEING Hiccup EASIER and therefore everything is hard now. Like sticking to your morals you have to continually fight for is EASY. There are two movies and 8 seasons of shows to back up how NOT EASY being Hiccup is even WITH Toothless. Granted, yes, not having Toothless and still having his morals would make it super-duper difficult to get anywhere with his morals and he'd probably end up like Valka, getting kidnapped and sequester himself with the dragons. Or as you mentioned, killing Toothless that first time would have made him into Grimmal (I hadn't even realized that's who Grimmal was to Hiccup, smh how badly can you mess up a foil that the audience doesn't even KNOW??) and that's honestly a brilliant move but again I didn't even see it. But thats not where they are at right now. Hiccup does have Toothless, and again, they have two movies and 8 seasons of shows to literally show they are stronger TOGETHER. This feels like it's straight from Justice League when Aquaman tells Batman the strongest man fights strongest alone and Batman is just baffled because 'that's not the saying, thats the opposite of the saying' and just UGH there's so much wRONG with this. A Justice League bad writing parallel was not something I thought would happen in this movie. Anyway, Astrid starts the scene off as a mirror to the one from the first movie, after telling him how screwed over they are Hiccup has a chance to respond. (This is what The Hidden World doesn't do.) When Astrid presses him Hiccup takes the time to talk about his thoughts, his feelings and he gets a helpful revelation. He realizes what he's known all along, Toothless and Hiccup are the same. "I wouldn't kill him because he looked as frightened as I was. I looked at him, and I saw myself." They are equal to each other. That's the tipping point and you can see it in his face. And Astrid prodds him on, "I bet he's really frightened right now. What are you going to do about it?" He's already done the stupid part and made a friend with an extremely dangerous dragon no one had ever lived to tell about, now he's going to do something absolutely crazy and show that dragons and Vikings together are stronger than fear. That's what HTTYD 1 was about to me, fear. The whole war is because of fear, the dragons attack because they fear the Red Death, the Vikings attack because they fear death and the loss of their way of life. Toothless and Hiccup helped each other not be scared anymore, now it's Hiccup's turn to save not only Toothless but the Vikings from their fear of dragons AND the dragons from the fear of Red Death. He wants to save EVERYBODY. He's the bridge, he can teach them that no one has to die, no one has to fight, no one has to be scared anymore. From this moment on Hiccup is on a warpath against war. he does nothing but constantly promotes peace, understanding and unity. Hiccup teaches against centuries of history with the power of friendship and it believably w o r k s. THAT is inspiring. That is the character-driven and defining moment where the hero comes back revamped and ready to throw down despite all the odds. This time??? He just dives in??? No plan??? No revelation that helps his character growth or the plot?? Get the dragons back because as you pointed out so eloquently, they clearly need the dragons after saying 'hey we don't need dragons'. And in the first movie when this happened we understood Hiccup's plan, he was going to ride the dragons to go save Toothless and all the Berkians and all the dragons from the Red Death. This time we don't know what the plan is, we don't know what's going on, we're just in for this ride that's taking all the wrong turns like a delicious cookie that's been baked with salt instead of sugar. Okay I don't actually remember where I was going with this except that HTTYD 3 doesn't exist to me and your rewrite of the ending actually made me tear up with its brilliance just like how the other two movies did. Thank you for finally being the voice of reason against the onslaught of misguided praise given to this movie. It doesn't deserve any of it except for its visuals, and isn't that depressing. Throwing away everything else for the sake of one line is one of the worst writing decisions one can make. Quick question tho, I saw you tallied how many times Toothless saves Hiccup throughout the movies and shows and wondered where that number landed?

The ending of the 3rd movie had always bothered me, and it still does. Everything you pointed out was exactly how I felt when I was watching the 3rd movie. I was actually intrigued by the LIght Fury when I saw her. I was hoping to get some kind of backstory to her, where she came from, how different Light Furies are to Night Furies, and what kind of name or rider she might get. We didn't get ANY of that. And instead of being curious, I was only angry at the Light Fury by the time we go to the ending of the movie, because to me, the Light Fury took Toothless away from Hiccup. As you said, there was no reason for the dragons to leave, no reason why the Light Fury couldn't just stay with Toothless with all of Berk. They just left because apparently Hiccup was worried other bad people will eventually come and hunt them. There was a lot of potential, and not only was it squandered, but they spat in the face of what the series represented. I guess Toothless wasn't as loyal as we thought he'd be to Hiccup, and they weren't as inseparable as we thought. But listening to your version of the ending was amazing, and I wished we got that ending instead.

They completely ruined the character model too. Gone is the rough texture of his skin he had in the first two films which makes THW Toothless look like a plastic toy. He’s much blockier in appearance which is odd for a species that should be very aerodynamic which caused him to lose the speed and power he had when flying that made him both terrifying and beautiful. His face is much more puppy like with big eyes that have been smashed together, and massive eyebrows that make him look younger. All this, combined with him constantly simping over the light fury makes him unpleasant to watch.

What caused this species, the stealthiest 'demon of the night sky' to die out? Was there a secret agency involved that helped grimmel? If so, why weren't they explored? How does grimmel know there aren't any more left in the world? The very least the movie could've done is show flashbacks of the killings to at least explain how tf he got blood on his hands. Barely anything is explained in this godamm movie.

And neither will I. I could have accepted a Toothless and Hiccup parting ways story, even a permanent one, if it was JUSTIFIED. But it would take a HELL of a lot to justify that kind of separation and what they did is absolutely nowhere near enough, in fact, probably one of the lowest possible reasons to do so. It's not to save the night fury species, she's a LIGHT fury, thus they are making HYBRIDS. It's not to save Toothless or Hiccup directly, they'd just finished defeating their latest immediate threat. It's not to change the hearts and minds of a large group of dragons or people, that can't be done by sweeping the dragons under the rug for a millennia (unlike the movie thinks it can). It's not to give Toothless and Hiccup families, they can start families themselves without separating just fine and also WERE each other's family. Every conceivable reason given by the movie has giant gaping holes in it and are completely wrong and it's amazing they actually thought this would be acceptable.

This was such a disappointment of a final, one of the worst mistakes for sure would be trying to cram the plot of the book into the film trilogy, at least the way they did it. I've never experienced something like this, but it was this film that somehow, as shallow as it sounds, Ruined the entire trilogy for me. How does that even happen? The previous ones are works of art (2nd being debatable) but I just don't enjoy them anymore, how?? And if I'm being honestly blunt, I don't like the light fury, I just can't get behind it at all. I know toothless is supposed to be the last of his kind and such but I think it being another female night fury would have worked far, far better. Terrible plot reason of grimmle hunting them all down, like, that isn't even possible in a single life time. The only reason the internet likes it so much is because of hype and blind acceptance.

  • @FatalGlory128

I completely agree, I hate the Light Fury for so many reasons. One of the biggest hopes and best character struggles for Hiccup and Toothless (and VERY well explored in the series) is the idea that Toothless MIGHT be the last of his kind, that they both want to find more Furies, and us as viewers rooting for them to one day discover some hidden island grotto somwhere where a pack of them has made a nest, and we get to see Toothless bond with his own kind and potentially even fight with them over them not accepting Hiccup and perhaps even have to make a choice between them and Hiccup and isn't that just such good drama?! But the Light fury race is NOT "His kind". They're RELATED sure. But it's nowhere near the same as having actually encountered another one. And to outright CONFIRM that Toothless is the last... well it's like a wrestler yelling out "I'm only pretending to punch the guy! I have no strong feelings toward him! We're just acting!" in the middle of a match. It ruins everything that made it engaging. And either that or they are trying so hard to apply an ideal they want the movie to have onto it because they love that ideal so much. But yeah.

Grimmel exists as a dumb excuse to not include any other night furies in the franchise which I don’t get at all Night Furies are intelligent and intelligent enough to probably avoid Grimmel’s hunting or better yet adapted to his hunting by becoming what toothless became in the first film Under the tyranny under the Red Death…..he never stole food….never showed himself….and never missed a target….heck they’re so intelligent they can probably literally make themselves play dead cover themselves in the blood of other animals and hold their breath that way Grimmel and his deathgrippers could think they died Toothless is unique in his own way that wild night furies probably wouldn’t overshadow or overlook toothless 1. He has a prosthetic tail-fin no other night fury probably doesn’t have one because they most likely would be killed by any other person 2. He literally lives with humans he lived with hiccup for the last six years and has formed a nice friendship with the new chief of Berk 3. He’s a freaking Alpha a king of dragons by challenging a dragon that nearly killed him and hiccup forced him to literally kill hiccup Stoick only died because he save hiccup….Toothless got so pissed off at Drago’s Bewilderbeast because it tried to kill both of them that he literally challenged him for the title as alpha and in a way avenged Valka’s Bewilderbeast which Drago’s killed Heck he even blasted one of Drago’s Bewilderbeast’s tusks off before in dragonese telling Drago’s Bewilderbeast to fuck off and leave Berk he was so willing to become alpha was when he saw the other dragons bow at him he accepted and lifted up his head with his eyes closed symbolizing he accepted the role as the alpha 4. Toothless can mimic Human behavior….I mean in the first film he tried to draw Hiccup and got angry at hiccup when he stepped in the line of dirt…. 5. He’s extremely loyal to hiccup….he’s saved him countless times from a lot of near-death situations….he even showed remorse when hiccup snapped at him for killing his father and even felt regret when he didn’t know what he had done until he noticed Stoick’s dead body

So far I have to agree with you on most of this stuff (I overlooked some things because I liked it so much but even I can admit it doesn't add up, as cool as some of those ideas are). You know if it's any consolation, the movies (mainly the 1st and 3rd) does pull quite a couple of ideas from the books, which happen to end in a far more satisfying way then The Hidden World tried to wrap up. They're very different and build up slowly but if you want real closure.... Cressida Cowell's Hiccup's Memoirs series has it.

Thanks and I love that you are callin this one of the best! ^^ Oh my god there was so much that drove me nuts even in the theater when first watching, and I even left out a bunch of stuff for the sake of making this project stay under an hour and be manageable as well heh! Oh they all pull ideas from the books, btut eh difference is they pull ideas that FIT with the tone and message they are trying to get across in the first two movies, those messages of hope and unity and such. This last movie they pulled the key idea of the line "There were dragons when I was a boy" and crowbarred it in despite it not making any sense whatsoever. Indeed I haven't read the books myself, but from the synopsis' I've heard the ending of separation makes so much more sense and is more justified and well handled than just "There will always be terrorists so it's better to give in to their demands, segregate, and hope that people forget how to be prejudiced by the time you come back."

I would comment anything here, but I decide to write something fan's are telling which makes no sense: Everyone compares the franchise with Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmarron, just because it's also a story about a captured animal who befriends with a human, but at this point it can be compared ANY movie with that Premise and still wouldn't made sense, here's why: Spirit ALWAYS meant to be free, he's a leader/protector of his herd, it's his core identity. Toothless and Hiccup MEANT TO STAY TOGETHER because they work together better, than apart. Comparing these two stories is one of the most apple to orange comparison I ever seen. Same goes with the original book series.

One factor you could definitely blame is universal buying dreamworks and Chris Defaria joining the company. Httyd 2 was the last movie made before the buyout, hence why it’s still good. Universal wanted the franchise to be more “family friendly” to sell toys, hence why we got THW, 9R, and rescue riders, and why the characters regressed and were flanderized this movie.

Wow, your ending made me cry for all the right reasons. The Hidden World made me cry for all the wrong reasons. I grew up with this series and it ended when I was just starting out as an adult. I recently got back into it now 4 years later and was wondering why I left it behind for so long, but then I realized it was this movie. It soured my view and really left me just feeling lonely, lost, and upset and I really couldn't understand the reason why. This is a wonderful video essay that encapsulates every shortcoming I felt but did not necessarily pick up on at the time, and why I've only really rewatched 1 and 2 a few billion times over but never 3. I like all the rewriting you did, though I'd probably change a little more of the earlier scenes because Ruff may be somewhat dumb but she isn't *that* dumb. I love my Loki-following twins and they have proven through the shows to be almost as crafty as the trickster god himself. No way would she go through the trouble of annoying Grimmel until he let her go just to lead him straight to her friends and brother! I also definitely would keep the scene on the cliffside pretty similar as an homage to the first movie. It'd end with "Probably something stupid.... and a little crazy." "That's the Hiccup I know!" And instantly cut to Hiccup coming up with a plan with the whole gang. Then someone, probably Snotlout, brings up the fact that they aren't going to be able to get out there fast enough without flying, this plan won't work because they don't have *dragons* jeeze Hiccup you're losing it! Which is only so mean because he's trying to hide how absolutely in tatters he is over Hookfang being gone and not the weird thing they tried to have going on with him and Hiccup and furthermore Valka! Blegh! Then Hiccup would have a moment of realization and worry because Snotlout is right. "You're right. Oh! How are we going to get to them without... fly-ing." His eyes light up as he looks at his flight gear and a determined and almost mischievous smile pulls onto his lips as he turns to his friends. Followed by Fishlegs catching on and saying "Oh no." Then when the scene next cuts back to the group they are all at the cliff with their flight suits. The twins are all for it, of course, and Astrid was on board from the start but Snotlout and Fishlegs are both uncomfortable with the idea. Fishlegs is not completely sure if the plan will work and Snotlout is very sure Hiccup has actually lost it. They bicker a bit before Hiccup gives them a pep talk around the lines of we do this for our dragons, they'd do the same for us. Then he and Astrid and the twins take off where Snotlout stays for a few moments more with Fishlegs. "We're all going to die, Hiccup is officially going to kill us, maybe I cou-" And Fishlegs rolls his eyes and grabs him, pulling him down with him. "Let's go Snotlout! For our dragons!" Snotlout exclaims something maybe even the beginning of a curse thats cut off by a cut to Hiccup and Astrid. That's the end of the extreme antics and jokes, everyone goes endgame mode after that. Only a few small gags sprinkled in as they fight together and all work as the well oiled machine the Defenders of Berk and The Edge actually are! Also Fishlegs does not bring the baby I stg. Anyway, I know this is three years old but I just wanted to share some of the things I've been brainstorming recently after getting back into this lovely franchise. Let's all just collectively write our own version of the Hidden World and accept it as canon instead! No book ending that makes no sense because they didn't thematically build to that ending and weren't really going off the books other than by name in the first place!! Thank you for this awesome video! 💚 I like your end and have accepted it as my canon ending.

It does seem like DreamWorks never really did learn from previous mistakes. I mean, you can take everything in this movie and literally copy paste it to Kung Fu Panda 3 because they made the same mistake on that series as well as this. What happened on Kung Fu Panda 3? They rushed it, took out all the original context of the series, the characters were not as badass, etc. The same mistake from that series was implied to the great HTTYD series. I just hope DreamWorks learns from their mistakes, and finds a working strategy with future series instead of rushing things.

2 Lines kinda ruin the movie in obscene ways. 1. "We've faced others like him." Well there's a big thing with that. There was no real villain in the First movie, except the Queen, though she was less a villain and more a Force of Nature Humans and Dragons had to band together to stop. And Drago? His methods AND motivation, hell even his end goal was different than the Villain of this movie. Do you know who IS similar? Viggo from the TV Series.......which means that is more or less Canon. And THAT leads to several other problems. Like what about the Dragons from the Other Islands, both Human inhabited or not? Toothless sure as hell isn't THEIR Alpha, and it's clearly Shown in 2 more than 1 Dragon Alpha can exist. PLOT HOLES! 2. "They are trying to create a Human-Dragon Society, and slowly they are changing minds." This one doesn't even NEED the TV Series to make several plot holes (Most notable that THE FUCKING VILLAIN said that! Which means the separation was probably unnessesary long term, that the people of Berk WERE SUCCEEDING.), but with the previous line in mind is made even worse and makes some of the previous plot holes larger and opens up even more of them. Did the Writers realize the can of worms they opened with those 2 lines? I did.

If I could change the hidden world. I would have someone at least Astrid to talk Hiccup out of sending the dragons away. To stop Hiccup from throwing away everything he dreamed for, fought for. To save Hiccup’s legacy. I would have changed it so either the dragons stayed or the Vikings when with the dragons to the hidden world. The final film didn’t have the ending that the first and second were building up to.

I don't consider this movie cannon either and the fact that the world just moved on about dragons in like one decade??? *SPOILERS* In Race To The Edge things *ancient* are still remembered, dragons were also in the series (and movies) protecting, sold and other things like that, also in the second movie Stoick while telling hiccup about Bloodvist was saying chiefs of tons of villages were having dragon problems and if tons of people were having dragon problems how were dragons forgotten??? I understand that also in the Race To The Edge I understand its said that most vikings don't live that long but dragons were too huge parts of society to be forgotten. And "guarding the secret of the dragons" is about impossible as dragon hunters, their relatives obviously will share tales about dragons and maybe possibly toothless might have done his roar to all the dragons but the world already knows about dragons, seriously Hiccup mentioned the world when he said "The *world* wants peace and we have the answer on berk" (the sentence may have been "The world wants peace and we have the answer back on berk" or something like that but the world was mentioned for sure) and that implies that about the whole world knows about the dragons.

I also don’t like the fact that Hiccup’s whole “this world isn’t ready for dragons” speech and that’s why berk got rid of their dragons doesn’t make any sense what so ever. To our understanding the entire world is absolutely covered in dragons, so sending their dragons away didn’t send allll dragons away. While the “hidden world” is an absolute unit of a dragon community, it’s not where every wild dragon is from and/or where they live. By getting rid of their dragons, they lost their massive advantage to protecting themselves, have no way of knowing if their dragons are in fact safe, but also have no way of rescuing other or wild dragons (a massive part of what they did and who they were in the entire cannon series). Not to mention that sending the dragons away after it’s widely known that they have dragons will 100% lead to them being attacked again, by large amounts of people (who are prepared to fight not just them, but their dragons). There’s no way to rationalize getting rid of their dragons that would make more sense than keeping them. Sending their dragons away also doesn’t make sense, because they aren’t the only community that interacts with them in a similar way, the cartoon series, which is cannon, gives us several examples of other islands and civilizations having a similar bond to the dragon riders. They act like sending their dragons away will stop all dragons from being hunted, meanwhile this is just an attempt to remove themselves from that on going war/ global issue (which again, won’t work, because it’s already widely known where they stand when it comes to dragons). Add all that to the points listed in the video, canonically the third movie makes absolutely no sense and feels more like a bad dream than actual canon events. It’s also stated that the creator’s wanted to end end the series in a way that it couldn’t be drug out and bastardized (but that didn’t even work, because now we have the mess that is Dragons:the nine realms). On that note, I don’t personally consider the third movie canon, but I would like to formally make this a petition to “canonize” this rewrite of the ending

Hell, I've wanted HTTYD3 to be new Watership Down of animation, instead it was some more sexual Nordic version of Mamma Mia trying to be a serious WW2 allegory. Shortened, HTTYD3 is a Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole wannabe. And I've expected HTTYD3 to be a way darker than LOTG when we have humans there.

Kung Fu Panda 3 was Okay I would say. A "B- to C+" when compared to the "A-" and "A+" that was movies 1 and 2. KFP3 didn't really do anything offensive or insulting to any of it's cast, it's main flaw was just having Po going through the same character arc for the third movie in a row, which made it "Ugh, this again?". KFP1 - "Who are you panda?" "I'm the dragon warrior! I believe in myself and I am the one who defines myself, not what everyone else thinks and says about me!" KFP2 - "Who are you panda?" "I'm the dragon warrior! And my past does not define me!" KFP3 - "Who are you panda?" "I'm the dragon warrior!" "And what does that MEAN hmmmm?" "Uhhhh 0_0" *movie happens* "I'm the Dragon Warrior! I'm not defined by my past as an adopted orphan!" I mean, yeah I get the theme of the KFP trilogy is all about identity and how you define yourself, but, yknow, retreading that ground for the third time, especially after it being done so well in the second movie kinda made me wish the question of the third film was more along the lines of "And what do you want to do with your life Dragon Warrior?" or something else like that instead of "Who are you?" for the third time in a row.

A couple notes that I wanted to make to try and improve the movie a tad bit. 1. During the beginning, make the idea of each dragon rider having cool explosions, walking through fire, or having dramatic entrances, but none of the random humor or anything. Make the scene mostly quiet and daunting, showing the more dangerous side to dragons. Although friendly, dragons can and will kill enemies. Making a scene that portrays that as one of the first in the movie would give a slight flashback to the first installment, where people thought of dragons as mindless beasts. It would be nice to have a scene that reflects off the past thoughts of humans towards dragons in the first movie, then move on throughout the movie to demonstrate how the years of development transformed the opinions of both species as a whole. 2. When toothless is on the cliff side with hiccup, make him more distant as in he’s learning to glide solo for a couple seconds, then have him curiously follow hiccup’s hand as he looks at empty places of the map. Afterwards, try and make toothless help a bit. Maybe before he met hiccup, he’d seen islands that he hadn’t, so he could use a stick and draw a couple random doodles of islands that they’ve never seen. It gives the time of friendship and assistance that we needed in that scene. 3. When toothless meets the light fury, instead not protecting hiccup, toothless snarls or roars at the light fury as an order of an alpha to not attack his best friend. If she flies away or something, he might be a bit upset, since she’d be the first fury he’d seen in a while, but he would snort at the sky and walk back to hiccup to see if he was safe. 3. When the light fury tries to throw hiccup, toothless sees her and spins himself around at the last moment, roars at her again, and she’d probably try to explain why. Toothless probably talks to her for a bit, still keeping a scowl, before continuing on with his flight mission. (Or something like that) [ADDITIONAL NOTE: in the second movie, toothless met the king of all dragons. Valka says this herself. When Drago’s bewilderbeast kills that one, he became the king of all dragons too. Toothless then defeats him. He is the king of every. Single. Dragon. Not just the ones on berk. So the Bow scene with the wild dragons does make sense.] Another quick side note. An artist who is also an environmentalist created three shortly written pages, and I’d like to narrate them for you. (I found them on tumblr but forgot their account so I apologize.) In the first film, the moral was: “Dragons are not inherently violent, and we don’t have the fear them. People and dragons can coexist in peace.” The second film’s moral is: “there are bad people who exploit and abuse dragons for their advantage, but we can always do our best to protect them.” The third film: “bad people will always exist, so no one will have dragons.” (The artist told us to switch the word “dragons” with nature to see how ironic it is, and they added an extra bonus with toothless indicating that he’s permanently disabled. If his tail breaks in the hidden world, he is dead. It’s literally said in the first movie. “A downed dragon is a dead dragon.” So yeah, hiccup blatantly risk’s toothless’s life by letting him go

Add-on to that, maybe this is the inciting incident to the movie, that Hiccup adds on a new map he's gotten from Johan that Toothless sees, freaks out over, and either crosses out and/or tears up. Hiccup goes "WTF BUD?!?!" and Toothless looks back at him all scared and shaking his head no, communicating "do NOT go there, PLEASE." and then somehow during the course of the movie, something happens that forces them to go to that place and overcome whatever is there. :) that's a hecc of a way to start off a dragons film I say. And yeasss I have seen that comic you're referring to :) VERY poignant indeeeeed, and shows how bad the movie is on both a surface level, and even moreso when you start looking at it as a metaphor for things like animals or the environment and stuff.

@@FatalGlory128 this is absolutely gorgeous idea, (especially on 2), where toothless could probably tell him not to go but goes anyways, only to find out that it’s some kind of island similar to the volcanic nest from the first movie! Also, for the first idea, instead of being scaly puppies, they should act like the animals their based on. LIKE THEY SHOULD. Keep them badass like the first two, but slowly enlighten the animals they’re inspired on throughout the movie. Other ideas would be to scrap grimmel and replace him with a different conflict. Possibly the expanding to new island idea you mentioned, and on these islands, perhaps are inhabited by Vikings that also dislike dragons, and/or have their own dragon problem. If not that, then some dragon hunters native to the island. The movie could be focused around that other than drago’s reincarnate.

I vote for your ending rather than the original. Which is why the third film was inconsistent. But the ending was not literally the best nor does it actually gives the audience the message about “letting you try to change the world.” Instead, it’s just trying to tell you to let go the things you love. Which is pointless because you can’t let go of your best friend you’ve bonded with for years. But yours was actually better and more point of the movie. The other two films are great. But the third film, no. It’s not.

Kinda ironic that the description of the movie goes as follows, " ...a surprising tale about growing up, finding the courage to face the unknown...and how nothing can ever train you to let go" when the entire plot itself derails these core concepts that were present throughout the prior movies... 4 years later and I'm still left feeling like something's missing.

Is anyone noticing how Barf and Belch switched abilities from gas and spark to spark and gas? With that said, this movie has a second title: How to Character Assasinate Everyone: The Fallen Arc.

"our world doesnt deserve you yet" may be a reference to the books, in how to be a pirate, treasure is hidden by hiccup's ancestor because the greed tore them apart and hopes his descendant would have better luck. Hiccup finds it of course and seals back the mountain of treasure bcs "we're not ready yet" OF COURSE THIS DOESNT APPLY TO THIS SCENARIO THO EVEN THE BOOKS HANDLED THE SEPERATION AS A GRADUAL THING AND TOOTHLESS AS BRATTY AS HE IS IN THE BOOKS STAYS WITH HICCUP AT HIS DEATHBED Using the books epilogue for the movie made me cry

YES! I AGREE!! You just put together the muddled thoughts we've all been screaming and made a cohesive, complete critique of why that blasted movie made no sense. Not only that, but you gave us a way it _actually_ could've ended in canon! You, good sir, are a hero. I'm gonna go ahead and consider your version as canon. The Hidden World was just a freak nightmare Hiccup saw one night, nothing more. _This_ is what would happen in the HTTYDverse I know and love. Thank you so much for making this.

Heheh, one of the discord server writers actually wrote just that fic where Hiccup wakes up one night and tells Astrid about this awful dream he had XD Thanks so much and remind me to get on with recording some of my other alt-endings/alt movie ideas too XD

I would like to bring up the fact that the warlords are the most pointless characters in the series. They weren’t intimidating in the slightest, and Drago was supposed to be working for them? Like what?
