How to Write Emotion | How to Train Your Dragon
It feels like so long ago now that How to Train Your Dragon 3 is on its way, but the first How to Train Your Dragon has a special place in my heart. It's a movie that makes you feel something in nearly every scene. In this video, I take a look at the ways How to Train Your Dragon's writers created these emotional moments.

Haha yes! My most played songs of 2018 definitely has a quite of few of these tracks on the list. Can't wait to see what John Powell does for this last film.

Cheat sheet is probably my favorite scene in this movie. After this discombobulation of being separated from each other and giving up any hope of reading the cheat sheet, Hiccup just resorts to INSTINCT. Throughout the whole movie he seems to have a plan for everything, he's a problem solver. But in this scene his safety net of control flies out the window and he and Toothless simply SURVIVE. Like, he trusts that Toothless is agile enough to respond to his control (and that he'll remain CONTROLLED), and Toothless trusts that Hiccup will do the right thing. In that whole scene Toothless doesn't freak out, doesn't try to save himself or arrest his fall... and once Hiccup hears Toothless panic approaching the boulders, gives up the cheat sheet, and takes complete control they are both just laser focused. They become one. And holy fuck you can FEEL their triumph in that music. Like you just know that they didn't just accomplish some tough task, they grew as a team, together. I feel like that's kinda the thing with this movie, they are far greater as a whole than as parts. They can both do greater things in general, together, than they can as individuals; Hiccup as basically a freelance engineer and Toothless as a terrorizing hitman. Also I see you're kinda just starting out. You have good content man. Wish you luck.

Thank you so much Alexandru! I love that scene as well. The first time I watched that scene it gave me so many chills. The music, the emotion, everything about that scene was perfect. It reveals so much about Hiccup's and Toothless' characters and how they have evolved with one another. And you are right, it really shows how great they are together as you don't have Hiccup without Toothless, and you don't have Toothless without Hiccup. It's a beautiful sequence that captures emotion perfectly.

The How to Train Your Dragon franchise is one of the most underrated animated series of all time. They are not just good animated movies, they are good movies overall and that's what I love about them. They don't treat children like idiots and they don't baby adults. They find the perfect balance to draw everyone in so they can enjoy. If the third movie is as good as I hope, I'm definitely putting the trilogy up there with likes of Toy Story.

My thoughts exactly! An animated movie shouldn't have to try and pander to a younger audience just because it's animated. How to Train Your Dragon's writers did an amazing job of telling the story they wanted to tell, and not trying things they think their audience would "like". Can't wait for the third movie!

Speaking of the music, we played the theme song in band last year! Unfortunately it sounded terrible, but that's not the composer's fault it's just that the school band was terrible last year.

Ever since I saw the movie in theaters, this has been my favorite depiction of soulmates and best friends. Like, the soft piano when Hiccup wakes up and sees his leg 😭 and then the culmination of symbolism between Toothless and Hiccup, it gets me every time I'm not crying, you're crying

It's not even funny how much I watched this movie, at school, at home, at our family friend's home, and I remember laughing SO MUCH at the beginning stages of Hiccup and Toothless's bonding. Hiccup's reactions were honestly hilarious and relatable (as a somewhat bookish outsider myself I related quite a lot) and Toothless's cat-and-dog-like behavior was so cute and fun. Now I don't laugh but I often tear up at how heartful and sincere the emotions are in this movie. The trilogy is great but the first movie is hands down the best when it comes to emotional storytelling.

The development behind Hiccup’s dialogue on “You just gestured/pointed to all of me” is fecking wholesome The music is just amazing and emotional! This is Berk, Forbidden Friendship, Test Drive, Where’s Hiccup, Romantic Flight are my favorites! Powell knew well a lot of people love Forbidden Friendship and Test Drive. The facf he used it on the ending of HTTYD3 made me cry tears of joy! And yeah, such a shame the music lost to Social Network

This film is my favorite of all time. How they get to tell so many things without any dialog is something that I love, the visual and musical parts combined are just works of art. I watch this film at least once a year, and I would never get bored of it. Great video man, thank you for doing it.

I just re watched this film since it first came out and I am so in love with the whole of it. It's.... God how do I describe it... Just so uplifting. And it IS the testament of "show don't tell" I hadn't really realized that until you said it. Excellent video! ps. Ever since it came out I downloaded the "Sticks and Stones" song from the movie to my phone and everytime it came out it always gave me chills and a longing to fly.

How to train your dragon has been my favourite movie since I first saw it when I was a kid. I am 19 years old now and have watched hundreds of other amazing movies and shows that I continuously go back to and love but this one has always been at the top. There are so many aspects of this movie that just make it absolutely incredible and I will stand by that until I die
