WE Watch

Just a movie nerd and amateur filmmaker talking about the films he's watched. I hope to be able to teach people about what I have learned through the years, from my own experience making bad movies and watching great ones. I hope you stay a bit and find something worthwhile.

I feel Alfie’s character was wrongly written out when Tommy shot him, and somehow mysteriously makes a comeback due to Alfie’s dreadfully missing and the producer made a miraculous comeback!

I’m not the oldest of my siblings, but everybody of my family listens to me what I’m saying. I’m not a gangster or something like that. I’m very unhappy that nobody give me contra. Nobody of my family understands me. I’m very depressed because of them. Because they do always what I want. I’m sometimes very disappointed. I am no more worth than them. What should I do you expert. I can’t kill them like in the show.

I like what you said about Tom Hardy being the only person who could play Alfie, and I 99% agree. I think the only other person who might have filled Alfie's shoes would be Gary Oldman (coincidentally Tom's favourite actor). Alfie was only supposed to be in one, maybe two episodes, but thanks to Tom's performance and hugely positive fan reaction Stephen had to expand the role. Thankfully!! Loved your video essay (and I liked seeing your face on camera, it was far more personal than just a voice-over)

I’d argue that the cross the line scene wasn’t even with any strategic confidence on Alfie’s end. I think once Tommy says he crossed the line everything melted away and Alfie was only speaking as if it was two of them and nothing else mattered. Two soldiers, two leaders and one just insulted the other. Alfie didn’t think Tommy would or wouldn’t shoot him. It didn’t matter, wasn’t even a topic of thought. He only cared that Tommy was being hypocritical and not rational. He can see the anger and surprise on his face when Tommy accuses him.

Thank you for making this video! I loved Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Alfie, but I didn’t catch the subtleties that you mentioned throughout your video. I am rewatching the series now with particular interest in watching Tom Hardy’s performance. I will have a much deeper appreciation thanks to all of your insights. I agree with many of the comments your video has received - Tom Hardy is a brilliant actor, likely the best of his generation. We are so lucky to get to watch him do his magic on screen. And I appreciate you doing this wonderful video to help us all see the magic fully.

He’s a big fella, extremely charismatic and cultural. In addition to being a war vet with apparently no fears of nothing or no one…his character is the true definition of an alpha; nonetheless Tommy outsmarts him always and if didn’t he would’ve steal the whole show. I hope the movie gives him an heroic ending

Tom hardy steals the show everytime he is on screen, or at least almost every time. However, what you failed to recognize when tommy kills Alfie’s man and says he, “crossed the line”. That is what sets Alfie off into a rage. It’s not that his man was just shot, and it certainly isn’t that he is about to be shot. Alfie was being literal when he spoke to Tommy. They chose that life. Every gangster and criminal and anyone that is in the pursuit of power in business chooses to “live by the sword, and fucking die by the sword”. Criminals and people that choose to live outside of the law have their own laws and code of honor and ethics to live by. Tommy tried to act as if he was just some regular civilian that got who boy taken from him, with this victim hood attitude. That is what Alphie was so angry about. Because both of them have sent many sons, fathers, husbands, brothers, and nephews straight to hell. So if he shoots him, then he needs to do it with honor. Not coming from a misplaced sense of hypocritical moral superiority. Great scene and greater message to all of us. “We reap what we sew”

There are three actors who are so skilled at portraying psychopathic murderers that I wouldn't want to meet them in a dark alley. One is DeNiro...another is Joe Pesci and the third is Tom Hardy.

I disagree with the premise Alfie was in total control in the first scene with Tommy BECAUSE ultimately Tommy’s bluff worked. Alfie did steal the scene, but he lost control when he believed Tommy was crazy enough to kill himself and all of Alfie’s men and goods. So, he was definitely not in total control.

You misread the scene where. Tommy tried the whiskey. The expectation is he thinks, not bad, isn’t enough credit & Tommy is standing his ground. But your expectations are subverted bc alfie really thinks the whiskey is even worse.

in a full circle moment i find it really interesting that it’s michael of all people to witness the “crossing the line” scene because not only is it is first kill, now thrusting him into that life but the line “he who lives by the sword, dies by it” as michael is the only one in this scene to do so, crossing that line when he tried to kill his own family and failing.
