HTC Vive Pro hands on

Ғылым және технология

The HTC Vive Pro has a higher-resolution displays than the previous model and built-in headphones. HTC has increased the resolution of the dual-OLED displays to 2880 x 1600 (1400 x 1600 per eye, and 615 ppi), a 78 percent increase from the 2160 x 1200 (1080 x 1200 per eye) resolution in the current Vive. The result is noticeable. Senior editor Tom Warren got a first look at the headset at CES 2018.

Very impressed that HTC is going to allow old stations/controllers with new headset. This is how tech companies should be run. Thanks for not being so greedy, HTC. And thanks for picking a great manufacturer, Valve.

Let's hope they remain that way. I trust Valve more than I trust HTC, so I hope they continue to have a strong hold over quality control in terms of both the device and the ethics behind pricing and marketing.

SDG Danny The main things that were stopping me from wanting to get a Vive was the incredibly low resolution and the wires hanging around your feet, the low resolution I know will just hurt my eyes especially since it's so close and the wires I was worried that when my young siblings play on it they will constantly trip over it and potentially damage it, so these upgrades are great for me!, once it's released I will save up and get one.

MechaMinilla99 The biggest problem is that the display is just an LED display in the original. The Vive Pro is getting an AMOLED display. That's probably the biggest reason I'll upgrade from my current one. Also, the Wireless Unit will be sold separately, probably for 200+ USD extra

HTC doesn't sell the most and the tech is Valve's which is open for all to use... I'd say Valve VR is the king if you are talking mainstream performance. There are far better headsets out there if you are not talking mainstream prices and PSVR has sold 4 times as many as Vive if you go by sales.

I got an HTC Vive and an oculus rift side by side a little while ago and it didn’t take a lot of thought to make an easy decision to return the vive, it was more expensive, heavier, and the controllers are unintuitive garbage. However, I am very interested in this and I’d like to see how oculus competes with it with their releases. I play a lot of elite dangerous so resolution will be super nice.

Thanks for the specs and resolution inside of HTC Vive Pro 2880 x 1200 is amazing. hopefully Vive Pro2 will have at least 4k, 3840 x 2160. This would be like having an ideal visual quality better than my HTC M9+ QHD, 2160 x 1440 ( 565 ppi) in my vr headset. I hope to see high quality 4k content like KZread 360 in 4k just to experience virtual teleportation to travel around the world n better VR simulation, hopefully in the next few years.

The headset has a nice design, but you can get that buy buying the current gen deluxe audio strap. Even the wireless module will be available for both, ultimately the main difference is the resolution and I'll have to wait to see some image comparisons before saying it would be worth it, but right now it feels like something for new adopters, rather than people wishing to upgrade. I imagine if you want to sell your current headset - do it now, as prices are about to dip. Also their mention of 'premium' vr uses concerns me, I wonder what the dollar impact of this will be.

We will be connecting to nerve signals instead of using headsets before we get to that level of graphic performance. Thing is, we are not going to be able to keep scaling down electronics much longer so the limiting factor of rendering power will be size and power usage rather than time to innovate. Graphics in films that are rendered on giant server farms still do not look indistinguishable from reality and they can take seconds to hours per frame where VR needs 90+ frames per second... In other words, we are likely to never have that kind of graphics in real time and why is it important anyways? The VR games that are the most immersive are the ones that do scale and lighting and interaction the best. Photorealism is not the thing that fools your instinctual body systems into feeling like there are actual objects around / near you.

When the crap will they switch to USB-C on the headset? Even if the cable splits to HDMI+power+USB on the computer end for now, having it as USB-C on the headset makes ridiculous amounts of sense. One plug on the headset end, single relatively thin cable going most of the way to the computer; and if you use a USB-C-video / Thunderbolt 3-equipped computer, you can do one cable the whole way. I'm glad the Pro will have optional "wireless", but it still needs power - so why not use the one cable you're going to have anyway for everything?

Sir Beric Dondarrion, Mofuckin' Lightning Lord well the FOV has NOTHING to do with "how clearly the resolutions can be displayed". It's more like how wide the given pixels are stretched around your field of view... Thanks for your nice comment though 😂

the design of these units are way too bulky and covers your nose (unless you have a super large head), which sucks... FOV is also currently bad, and it needs to be way better, mostly horizontal but its overall just too tiny to be fully immersive..

Don't worry about the suits. Most people don't use the accessories. You aren't missing out on much. If I had to buy a headset today, I'd buy the Samsung. You can play all the Vive games on Steam with your Samsung. Just install 'Mixed Reality' app on Steam.

Are they only going to sell the HTC Vive Pro Headset? What about the bases, controllers and everything else? I can't just buy the headset alone and have no controllers and nothing. Nor am I going to buy the Vive Pro then buy a Vive just because I need the controllers and bases, that'd be nearing 1000 dollars.

Tobi Ogunsanwo the two are so different from each other than I don't know how or why you'd compare them. The Vive is a full gaming platform. Controllers, base stations, room scale VR, very well made and constantly updated software.. the list goes on. Buy the Odyssey for very casual games or watching media. Anyone who spends money on it as a gaming platform has wasted their money considering another hundred bucks would buy them the Vive. There's literally 0 competition in regards to gaming. No question.

I'm mainly into sim racing and the odyssey is touted as the best on all sim racing forums by a mile. The Vive pro just matches it in terms of the specs that matter to me.

  • @PaddysPubPatron

Agreed. Sim Racing fan or otherwise, Vive can now (or will soon be able to ) produce a better playing experience. Every racing/driving related game I've played has been a blast on the Vive. I can put the key in the ignition, use stick shift, steer the wheel with both hands, roll down the window - the list goes on and on. If you prefer the Odyssey, great, but it's pathetic compared to the Vive. If not in design, then in software. If not in software and design, then in the quantity and quality of updates to the device. If not in software, design and updates, then in the marketplace, where the Vive has more games available to it than any other headset combined, except for maybe the Oculus which still only has half as many games available as the Vive. Also, the Vive doesn't restrict you to any marketplace. I can find home-made VR games anywhere and play them without a single bit of setup or workaround.

Yea but so what when it can't track your hands behind you. Just because YOU play ONLY sim racing doesn't mean the rest of us don't play other games. I play sim racing plus other games. So it sounds like a personal issue. I'd rather get the head set that does everything well than one thing.

Oculus with touch is too much cheaper than the Vive right now. They need to lower the price on the old one. I'd go with Oculus for the touch controllers and the slightly better optics and ergonomics even if they were the same price.

I think this is a panic reaction to the "Pimax 8K". Only 2.3MP, the first Vive has 1.3MP. And the 8K has 3.7MP at real UHD display resolution of 8,3MP (3840x2160) at a fov of 200°. This Vive Pro has the same fov of 100°. Hmm, this is realy not the "next generation" VIVE, this is a fast bulided "panic product". And my suggestion to pimax, use the chance to sell the pimax Lighthouse 2 bases at the same time HTC offer the Vive Pro without base stations! Pimax could also profit from the Valve Pro :-) .
