HP Spectre Folio Review: Is Leather Better?

Ғылым және технология

100% genuine chrome-tanned leather, that’s what you get with the all new HP Spectre Folio, and no, it’s not a case. The laptop is literally wrapped in leather. It simply exudes quality beyond measure. But how does it perform? Awesome all round, or is it just an all show and no go?

    Best review I've seen so far(in my opinion)! I've had a chance to demo it at Best Buy, I'm really impressed. Also I really like the LTE feature rather than relying on wifi. I think it's a great laptop for someone looking for a ultraportable 2in1 business laptop.

    I recently purchased this laptop about 4 days ago and I'm highly impressed. The speakers isn't all that great but I really like that it can bluetooth to my airpods which is perfect. The i7 core is amazing. The price is alot(bought mine for $1,349 at best buy) but it's really worth the money. Any student or anyone in business with enjoy this computer. The only con I heard about this computer is the leather pealing through time but I believe if you put some leather protecting on it and maybe(if you have the extra cash) get a extended warranty. The pen is pretty great, wish it did come with pen calibration just in-case. It does come with a factory one year protection. All in all a great computer, despite what "Linus tech tip" says.

    Very good review.I am actually going to buy one,but I was only going to buy it for the looks,and the leather,but now I see it's a good computer also.The pad doesn't cause me any grief because I don't use them,I use a mouse as it's so much more convenient,and for music I use headphones,so all in all I am sold even more so now.Thanks.

    I'm in the Apple camp and currently own iMac (late 2015) Macbook Pro (late 2017) iPad Pro 1st gen - this is the first non apple product I have considered buying as I would like to have a windows option at home but no hardware has grabbed my attention up until the release of this HP Spectre Folio. Your review was really informative, my preference using a laptop would include a mouse & headphones so your cons wouldn't effect me - thanks to your review I'm now sold on this, thanks for taking the time to do this and I've subscribed for more of the same in the future! Cheers - Fraser

    Hi me again, guess I'm a subscriber now he he. Since we chatted the other day I sorted most of teh criticism oh my Leica TL2 by upgrading the firmare from v1.1 to v1.5 and WOW. I digress, this is about laptops. I absolutely love HP Spectre; all the models are fantastic. I havent had a laptop for over a decade, I have always used a maxed out Linux tower (I build them from components to save money) but, last year I got pissed off on holiday trying to surf 3D virtual worlds on my Nexus tablet with a bluetooth keyboard; never ever again. So I started looking and the HP Spectre range jumped out at me, there is nothing like them, they look gorgeous. Bit of research and it seems the technology has got to just about where my lifetime dream is possible; what we used to call a life drive, your entire life on a small machine. So I bought the 15inch for my Sister and took the plunge and bought the HP Spectre 13inch 7i 4K screen 360. Yes it costs shed loads, its more expensive than the 15inch and macbooks but, gosh it ticks all the boxes. I pick it up and it slips in my Crumpler Doozie Camera bag, add my Leica and I am off on holiday. I can charge the camera and transfer photos with USB-c. Alas its got Windows 10 (could be worse it could be apple, behave yourself girl, ProTogs love apple, sorry I'm a geek) which I am trying to love, despite it being a tad flakey; any trouble and I will wipe the disk and load Linux Mint which supports all the touch stuff. Back home I have all mod cons; I bought the HP Elite X2 USB C-Docking Station, this powers the Laptop and feeds a 27in ASUS/B&O Monitor, a Logitech dongle with Keyboard & mouse, a Dell USB DVD drive and a Asus Xonar U7 MKII USB DAC and Headphone amplifer feeding my Cyrus III stereo amplifier and Audiolab Q speakers either side of teh screen. Of course it drives my Epson V600 flatbed film scanner. Of course I still have my 7i Linux Tower if i need some power use. Once I kicked off the useless MS software (research tells me nobody uses MS software, most download Chrome) I did well matching my tower software suite. Firefox browser synchs through Google to my Pixel2 XL phone. For photos my favourite GIMP and DarkTable work well and Libre Office does all the serious stuff. So am I impressed. Yes I absolutely love my HP Spectre and the fact I can flip it over into tablet mode is a bonus. Not sure about leather,I think I prefer the polycarbonate but then, my HP is usually sitting on the desk with the lid closed feeding the docking station (oh yes not sure about cooling with the lid closed as I am mostly using full power so I prop the lid slightly open using a stuffed toy which works a treat). Yes HP is expensive but, then its hardly Leica or Cyrus level, so I think it was worth every penny and now I can take my digital life wherever I go; I will take that as a win ;-)

    Vici Martynov Glad the update to the TL2 worked out. Yeah also a big fan of the Spectre series. Really well designed and lot of great engineering involved. The folio leather is really high quality an it been a joy to use. When we first received it I thought it might be a gimmick but I was proven wrong quickly. HP did a wonderful job. Just wish the trackpad was larger and more precise.

    I seen this laptop at Best Buy and I'm curious as to how basic video editing in premier pro is with this. I'm not going to be doing a whole lot of 4k footage, mainly 720 to 1080. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you!

  • @TECH360TV

    @TECH360TV

    From what I know the US versions can be spec’d much higher than what we have here. If you really want the Folio for video editing, spec it out. If you are looking at the base model I don’t think it will handle what you want it to do for the long term. It’s a really nice computer but more for day to day usage. Anything graphics and video will need more horsepower with good graphics card.

    Looks like HP gave up on this device, which has been my daily driver for two years now. A real shame. The Y processor and closed system (you can't get into it w/o destroying the cover) + high price likely doomed it. Also, like most other reviewers, you missed another (important) viewing mode. Set it up in the tented mode, then fold the screen ALL the way backward and turn the unit around. The gyro reorients the screen and now you have literally infinite tilt positioning on the screen. I tend to carry a full-size keyboard and mouse around with me when I'm on the road. In the reverse-kiosk mode I have complete control of the viewing angle and it works wonderfully as a desktop replacement. On aircraft it is small enough that the stewardess doesn't nag you to shut it down for takeoff and landing. Just fold it flat into tablet mode and they assume that's all this is. A GREAT machine (and review, BTW). Too bad this device has obviously failed. It is SO MUCH BETTER than typical convertibles. HP is simply missing the boat by neglecting to highlight this alternate way of folding and viewing the screen. I think a lot more people would go for it if it had a quad core instead of a two-core and if they realized the modes are not nearly as limited as they appear to be. The could also make one out of aluminum so we could repair or upgrade as needed.

Georgia then said that chips on the motherboard were bad and I would have to wait more than a month for them to get a new motherboard so they could cannibalize my exisiting unit.
