Sorin, I think you should sign your name inside every laptop you repair. You are famous for doing a great job and, this would add value to these laptops and everyone would want one. "Repaired By Sorin". Just a thought.

The BMS of the battery has many software protections like "permanent failure if is over discharged" or "permanent failure if cells are unbalanced", doesn't matter if the battery has only one cycle of charge. To reset this internal flags you have to connect the battery to a specialized interface available from the manufacturer of the chip (Texas Instruments), or I2C on a raspberry pi, run a I2C address scanner, find the I2C address, and login into the battery with a password known only by the manufacturer of the laptop. That password is used as a key to communicate with the laptop and guarantee that the battery is genuine. The protocol is something like this: The charger IC from the laptop is sending a random number to the battery, the battery encrypts the number and is sending back a 20bytes digest. You can sniff the communication, but the password is 16bytes long and the random number is encrypted twice with SHA1 algorithm. A brute force attack will take more than 10 years.

Sorin: Good to see another video! Regarding the battery not charging; I recently fixed an Alienware laptop that had the exact same issue. The battery would show as taking 0mv of charge in BatteryInfoView, but the battery was nonetheless recognized and it had capacity information and all the normal stuff you see when a battery is connected. Only issue is that it wouldn't charge. That was until I found out that the power MOSFETs next to the charging jack were possibly faulty. Removed the two MOSFETs and discovered that one of them was showing resistance of

The first thing I do when the battery is not charging is to connect it to the battery analyzer. It has happened to me many times that the cells were depleted and NB could not charge it. It was enough to charge it on the battery analyzer and then everything worked. It may have been blocked due to a low level of battery cells. In that case, it must be reset. Of course, it depends on the state of the individual battery cells, but mainly what is the balance between them.

That Elitebook has the same 4 front LED indicators (Wifi, power, charge, HDD) on all HP Business laptops since the acquisition of Compaq up until that laptop, and even on the old Compaq models like nc6220 nc6400 6910p, when the battery LED comes on amber and then shut off, the battery (BMS controller) is toast (while amber means charging, green/white means >= 90% charge, and then off means fully charged). Even on those units it's impossible to revive the controller for the same reason. But if you do have an aftermarket battery instead (many with no permanent failure flags), then most of the time just charging the cells up and make them reasonably balanced will revive the battery and it will work once again, or if it is critically discharged but not this crazy (at least like 7V), they will just charge the battery anyway and it will work. This is how I got working old aftermarket batteries working for old Compaq/Elitebook models. Note: Pavilions never used this set of indicator codes, and their meaning and location changed all the time.

Hello sir good day to you. I have a suggestion on the last part why didn't we just replace the battery first before we did some soldering so in that case we could have focus/ isolated the problem. maybe its really in the battery. Im a fan here in the Philippines also a technician im not really good in electronics tools like tester or etc.. What i mostly do try swapping the parts first just to make fast on troubleshooting. But again another great video god bless you sir and share us more of your experiences.

I don't buy HP anymore. Garbage laptops. No clock backup batteries these days. Lenovo much better brand now. I have resurrected lithium cells in the past by charging the battery behind the protection circuit; once it has some charge the protection circuit will then allow it to be charged. Seems when batteries are empty the electronics won't let them be charged, and it an issue when batteries have run right down and not been charged for a long time. Have also had batteries puff up; in this instance I have put a pin prick in the plastic bag that the battery has been sealed in to release the gas buildup. Then its fine although you might might get the occasional wiff of the gas through the pin prick!
