If you undo the single bolt that holds the DVD drive, you can take it out before you start and it makes the process easier. This is what HP recommend.

Hello. I have the same laptop. And i wanted to upgrage to ssd and also the ram as well but i’m not sure if it is sodimm ram or dimm. Because there is a dimm word on the ram so i thought i should buy the dimm version. So which one do u have on your laptop. Thanks!

What model is that? Mine is a 17-x037cl. I was wondering how much memory they can handle. I did the swap for an SSD. Even though the SSD is a lot smaller than the hard drive the computer came with, it is a lot faster. That 1 TB drive is in an enclosure right now. I have an adapter that allows a hard drive to be installed in place of the CD drive and could put any 2.5 inch drive in that and install it like a second hard drive. Works easily, the worst thing that may happen is you might have to get into your BIOS and set the boot drive again. The hardest part of that was probably getting the drive into the adapter and attaching that small bracket to it from the CD drive (that screw is tiny) but you need that bracket to keep the drive somewhat secure in there. It is a good fit if you buy the right thickness adapter. Measure the thickness of your CD drive before ordering. They come in a couple different sizes. They are also not at all expensive. I took the face off my CD drive to keep it looking normal, they usually can be attached to the adapter. I only did this because I don't use CDs and DVDs any more now that most software can be downloaded anyhow.

did you clone the og hdd to the new ssd first? I have this same laptop and got an ssd for it, but i think mine has the 1tb hybrid hdd and i don't think you can clone hybrid hdd. :(

His is HP 17-Y015CY - I can't explain why it is not in the Video description or notes. I do like his way of working through it. My favorite part is when he goes "Oh Wow... now i see why the dvd.... take the dvd out....

It's nice to no longer have to pay someone to do this.

I just can't. No model number, fails to take screw out of CD drive after unscrewing and breaks off faceplate, I mean c'mon.
