Listening this right after "Daylight" and holy helllllll... I missed this song.

I remember making my mom play this song in the car when I was young and I called it “the dog song” and I thought the picture was scary but now I think it’s cool

The song is about the church being oppressive and controlling, it's not about being ostracised for being gay though that's a decent interpretation. The song is abut a man comparing his lover to the church because Hozier grew up under the Protestant Quaker faith which he felt heavily controlled Ireland.@@realcrownedcryptid

This is sad. The church spat on him and did such a bad job preaching that he needed a LOVER to make himself feel needed and loved by a bigger entity
