could be hate for anything, not just a person. Its actually a positive outlook on things that are inevitable.

The fact this song falls under the circle of Fraud and is about avoiding someone and people are still interpreting it as a love song is so delightfully poetic

I love how this isn’t a love song. “If I was a rip tide I wouldn’t take you out” and “if I were a stampede you wouldn’t get a kick” feels like he’s saying that he’d avoid whoever no matter what. Like irl in a stampede/rip tide you’re not getting outa that without a scratch 😭 but nah he ain’t touching you. And “I hear he touches your hand, and you fly away together. If I had his job you’d live forever” like to me “He” is an Angel/Angel of death who like takes people to heaven. My man is saying that he wouldn’t take whoever to heaven where he lives cuz he really don’t like them, he keeps says “go look another way” im sorry it’s so hilarious to me.😭 idk if that’s what Hozier intentions were (making the song sound like a big ole “stay away from me”) but i love how backhanded it all sounds especially when you think abt the song being abt fraud.

this is a really interesting take on it, especially considering i DID interpret it as a love song lol!! to me, he's describing dangerous situations (rip tide, stampede, dying) and saying how if he was those things, he would protect the person from them. but i like your interpretation too!! makes me see the song in a whole different light 😂

having grown up listening to van morrison i gotta say that this song feels very much his style but also uniquely different, and i love that immensely

This song made me cry, laugh, dance, smile. This feels like the bright moment of joy on this album, the one that allows you to forget the world for a moment, forget your worries and heartache and just be. Just be. Just be. Listening to each tick, each beat isn't tedious in this song, it's delightful, it's liberated, it's raw and joyful and carefree, ego-less. Have I mentioned I'm crying?

Hi I'm aroace flux. This song reminds me of a time I developed the most unwelcome and unusual squish. It was kinda all-consuming and my partner at the time really disliked the person, so yes, avoidance. But not total ambivalence. More like, "Ugh I don't wanna feel these things please just let me dislike/forget you so I can get on with life!" Hence, perhaps, the "C'mere to me," in the beginning. Like I get the sense he's saying, "I don't love you/want to love you, but I definitely like and think about you and I don't like that."

that might be a conscious choice, bc it’s sort of the same at the beginning of abstract (psychopomp) if i remember correctly. i think it’s just so that his voice matches better with the twangy strings & background instruments, though i’m no producer so i might be wrong
